He didn't learn shit. He got a magic talisman that he knew to throw at evil spirits. Strode just got done rattling off some incantation to fight on the spiritual plain while using her real body to mark out the the demons sigil. That chick has been STUDYING since her time with the old man.

I know it's the essence of Hellboy, but it just felt like they were buying time with issues upon issues of them getting knocked back on their asses in the same way.

Three quarters of the "narration" is unnecessary, killing both the pacing and the mood, that aside thought bubbles or narration boxes would've accomplished the same thing.

Everyone going out like a bitch is kind of the thing towards the end (Hell on Earth, after all), but I guess Arcudi deciding to leave also had something to do with it.

>they just do the same thing over and over again, and then suddenly a magical solution

This was pretty shitty though. Especially how Johann saving BPRD out of nowhere. He had been studying the Sledgehammer suit, but suddenly in that specific arc the Headquarters is under heavy attack and is unable to repel? Come on.

Nothing, absolutely nothing can be worse than Roberson's crap though.

Again, much like most of the named demons Balam is an actual demon from the Ars Goetia and that's his actual sigil used as well.

Balam is the 51st spirit of Hell. He appears with three heads; the first is that of a bull, the second that of a man and the third is that of a Ram. He is a great and terrible king and he knows the answers to all things past, present and to come.

No, they all have different specialities. Balam would be mostly used to know the actual truth of what happened, is happening or will happen. Gamori knows where treasure is buried and how to seduce women of any age but she wouldn't know the true events of the past.

So it's not a modern thing for Ashley, she's almost a decade old. Her crush on Liz is crucial to her character, it's the reason she's an exorcist because Kate used it to trick her into working the case.

I personally liked how it was alluded to with her 'fan obsession' about Liz, and how Kate used her senpai-type feelings about Liz at one point to convince her to accept a mission (saying something like how Liz thought highly of her or something). It was cleverly done.

I like to blame roberson

>Gonna go slay a dragon, should be back for breakfast.
>>
>>92177545
I feel like their plan was not well thought out. Hey, this dude just showed up with a super weapon capable of killing ogdru hem easily, why don't we quickly sail it over (with our shit fleet of mothballed ships) right to the doorstep of the third super-being on earth, who is a messenger for basically the council of true evil, one of which just landed in Kansas and is known to be in communication with him. What could go wrong?
>>
>>92177602
They were not wrong. What the agents of hell did not know was that Hellboy's prophecy was not directed at the Earth but at Hell itself.

They just assumed that it was Earth.
>>
>>92177733
One of the reasons why these issues are considered the weakest of the BPRD series.
>>
>>92177602
They aren't wrong, they just didn't work out the way people thought they would. "Hellboy will bring about the summoning of the Ogdru-Jahad" didn't mean Hellboy would summon them, it meant that Hellboy continuously refusing his many birthrights would lead to an uppity fae pig starting shit that cause the Jahad to be summoned.
>>
>>92177733
As a whole, and it's odd considering the years of info they have, the BPRD seems really uninformed about Ogdru Jahad and Hyperborea. Maybe the "research" in B.P.R.D. is mostly applicable research more so than history/myth or theory. But I mean forawhile they were basically government ghostbusters. And this end of days shit really did snowball quickly and more so under the U.N. have become this pseudo military force. And the one guy that does seem to have an understanding of it, they spent years thinking he was mostly crazy but kind of useful. Then Hellboy seems to leave shit out reports about what might be going on with him, Liz leaves shit out of her reports about the visions she had of the future, if she even makes reports at all. Like, I love Liz, but she is an awful, awful agent. But the point remains the B.P.R.D. has been dropping the ball a long time. Even Strode seems to know something is going on in hell but doesn't bother to send it up the line. There doesn't seem to be any real organization of the intelligence they get.
>>
>>92178163
Well, Strode I can understand. Shit's going down, problems with demons that she can easily handle so far shouldn't be the bureau's problem.
Liz is dead inside through her agent years or an angsty teenager. Visions usually don't mean shit anyways, fuck prophecies, bla bla.
Hellboy always had a problem with authority, for obvious reasons.
>>
>>92175339
those hips.....
>>
>>92178290
But all that doesn't matter if a proper command and operational structure had ever been implemented. And now that I say it I guess Bruttenholm is to blame. Because he was kind of clearly willing to be the lore/books keeper without training anyone to replace him. And he was the one that seemed to stress more than anyone else that this was civilian organization. But even when he was they were on the right track under his lead. I mean he died investigating the temple that lead to the first crop of frogs. But after that no one seemed to have any insight to get ahead of things and the B.P.R.D. became a much more reactionary force.
>>
>>92176878
Those people are kind of sad.
>>
>>92178689
I think his death came suddenly, and that was the reason for not training anyone besides Hellboy.
>>
>>92176416
>--But you had a father

Fuck, that bit got me.
>>
>>92178790
The dude was 80 something years old.
He should have been training someone for 20 years at least 10. Not even mentioning the danger of field work for your average "trained" human let alone an octogenarian taking a trip to the fucking arctic.
>>
>>92178963
He considered Hellboy as his protege.
>>
>>92173504
>I can offer you a place in the new world to come.
>S-seriously. I'm a big deal.
>Wait, no! Don't send me back! My slaves are going to fucking murder me! Please!

Shit talking demons...

>>92173575
The militarization that followed the War on Frogs really did a number to the BPRD. They had enemies they could kill with bullets, so they got people good with guns. Lots of veterans and active military types. The older agents, from Bruttenholm's days knew more of the mystical side of things, but the rate of attrition got to be pretty high. Stasso was probably the last of the old guard besides Abe and Liz... and Kate, I guess, but she never got much into the occult beyond learning about it.

The swap over to the end of days was so quick, it left them fighting the same way they had in the past.

Really what they should be doing is finding and recruiting shamans, like Dayana, that shapeshifting clan from the South-West, that native guy who could control/guide Ogopogo... well that last guy is probably dead but that's just giving examples.
>>
>>92173523
So she was a lesbian
>>
>>92174009
Hellboy lore, although super cool and intricate in itself, is weird and doesnt make a whole lot of sense once you begin to apply any kind of real world comparative theology to it.

In Hellboy all divine beings are actually spirtual children descended from either the messengers/angels of God/The Universe at the start of the world or the seven-in-one dragon of night created by one of those messenger angels at the start of the world or Hecate who learned the secrets of magic from the renegede angel that created the seven fold dragon and was captured/located by/a friend of the ancient king of the golden first humans, Thoth, in his garden in ancient hyperborea/the antarctic and gave that knowledge to all the citizens of his kingdom (which they mainly used to worship and diefy Hecate herself). Or some combination of that.

So she is (probably) talking to one of the angels of the creator being capitol G God, who is the god of all christian abrahamic faiths, and taken as a seprerate and one of the main gods in the Hindu faith.

Of course the Hindu faith (in the cannon universe of hellboy) also largely venerated evil deamon monsters descended from satan, the evil seven in one dragon and hecate.

So... since there's at least three of those eggs (the one from Atlantis, the Mona and the one from Abe's first mission without Hellboy) does that mean that each one was a T'sethuan shaman who transformed themselves to carry on light into the new world?

Do they all have spirit buddies, like Shonchin?

There's also the one that Strobl finds.
>>
>>92176890
Arms aren't quite as beefy though.

Oh wait, we got its name in the latest Visitor, actually... Zara-Hem. He seems like one of the most active Ogdru on Earth considering how many statues he has, and all the shit they do.
>>
>>92176928
The seven who are one, anon.

I forget if we find out which of the heads it is, though.
>>
>>92177149
McWhirter you glorious bastard. I READ YOUR BOOK!
>>
>>92180667
That's the one from Abe's first mission without Hellboy.
>>
>>92177191
They are probably alive. Their dimension, Hyperberum if that IS where they are, is supposed to be safe from the Ogdru... though they did indicate that if the Ogdru Jahad got free, that safety would end.

But their ability to interact with (abjura-)Earth is limited. It seems they can send agents to it, well armed, but there are only certain times that they can... "when the spheres are right," basically.
>>
>>92177264
So... the big monsters, the Ogdru Hem? They are the children, the creations of the seven who are one, the great dragon, the seven headed serpent, the Ogdru Jahad.

The Ogdru Jahad was created by the Watcher, angels, in an act of hubris, basically because they were tired of waiting for life to evolve. One of them stole heavenly fire to try and bring it to life but that failed too. Then night fell and the Darkness entered into it. The Watchers went to war with the Ogdru Jahad and its creations, calling lightning down on them. They killed some, casting the immortal spirits of the Ogdru Hem into the out reaches, and sealed the the rest.

But they couldn't defeat the dragon. Only one thing had a chance. The Watcher who reached out and stole the heavenly fire. By his hand, the dragon was sealed and flung into the outer darkness. The other Watchers turned on the thief of heaven and tore him apart in shame for their complicity in his crime. Only one piece remained, the hand that stole the fire. A right hand. When God saw what happened, the other Watchers were thrown into the pit, or cast to the earth to breed monsters, becoming the Fair Folk and beasts of legend. Lesser spirits were told to become the first race of man, the golden people, the Hyperboreans, some rebelled and were sent to the pit as well, becoming demons. (I'm iffy on that part, but I think that's right). The Hyperboreans created a great statue and affixed the Watcher's hand onto it, bathing it in amber and writing holy words along it. When Hyperborea fell, the statue came to life and slaughtered the sinners, staining its hand red. The statue destroyed itself, but one part remained.

The right hand of doom. Which is currently attached to Hellboy's arm, and that he's in Hell so good luck getting it back.

>Which is currently attached to Hellboy's arm, and that he's in Hell so good luck getting it back.

Is it that much harder than just summoning Hellboy?
>>
>>92177602
They got bits and pieces right, but the thing with prophecy is the interpretation.

Hellboy was present when the world started to end. He rallied a great army of the dead. He held a sword, and for a time had a crown as well (even if it was invisible for most of his life until some upstart stole it from him). Hell, he even rode the dragon that everyone seemed to obsessed with... though he was trying to kill it at the time.

And although he's in the pit, he's the only guy with the key that can let him out... and there's another army of the dead waiting for him, along with a sword and crown.
>>
A few years ago I remember a dl link for all the mignolaverse stuff floating around /co/-- is that still around?
>>
>>92181768
Hellboy has repeatedly given up, cast off or forsaken his demonhood, to the point where his family basically considers him human. The first time he was summoned was basically cosmic accident. Rasputin put out a net and found Hellboy-baby spinning in the void because Helldad was getting his shit kicked in and tossed him out to keep him alive and away from Satan's forces.

Summoning Hellboy now would be summoning a dead man from Hell. Which is doable, necromancy has always been a thing. But the witches all killed themselves, like cowards, most of the infernalists have lost their powers because their patrons are dying left and right and the fae are basically all dead, too. Alice, it seems, is able to commune with Hellboy at times, as she's the new queen of the fae and that sort of power is well in her grasp. But her new role probably limits her in a lot of ways, too.

Plus HB's got a lot of juice in him, still. If he doesn't want to be summoned, there's not a lot that can force the issue.
>>
>>92181515
>When Hyperborea fell, the statue came to life and slaughtered the sinners, staining its hand red. The statue destroyed itself, but one part remained.

I remember the statue falling, but not the part where it came to life. When did this happen? Is it possible that I've missed something?
>>
>>92182736
It's in the first thread. The statue witnessed the seduction of the Hyperboreans by the Black Goddess Hecate and killed the worshipers. It's why the hand is red, it's stained with their blood.
>>
>>92182736
It was on the Island, iirc
>>
>>92182995
Yeah, I just went and read that. Guess I'm retarded. I've read through this about 4 times, and I've just never caught it.
>>
>>92173759
You know, one of my favorite parts of any Hellboy comic is when he silently wonders around creepy places and lets the book tell the story of what happened there with striking imagery and the occasional comment on fucked up stuff.
This whole sequence of her investigating the house is like the exact opposite of that.
>>
>>92176939
They should be their own sitcom. Should have their own miniseries.
>>
>>92174453
Okay, that's pretty cool.
I kind of what to see her interacting with the regular troops now, and just randomly pull out a magic sword in the middle of a firefight as if it's no bog deal.

Clearly it's Abe.
Him going from one of the most interesting and likable characters to the mopey wet blanket fish monster he is now was the worst thing that could happen to anyone.
Flaws or not, at least people can come away from this book liking Liz or Krous. But no ones gonna pick up Abe's shitty ongoing and think he's okay.

Thanks for this. Haven't kept up with the HB universe, and even though she's kind of a mary sue, I kind of like Ashley. Spent the rest of the day looking for her other appearances.

She showed up in a one-shot starring Abe and Roger. Vaughn was there too I think.

the propecies are already irrevocably wrong, Johann undoes them when he.. kills one of the 7 Jahad, an impossible task.

this essentially spins the "set" future out of whack, it also makes Johann the strongest being the Hellboy universe, even if it were only for a few moments.

I hope he wasn't too disappointed by being 'stood up'

The next B.P.R.D. cycle is titled "The Devil You Know".

Is Hellboy coming back to earth?

Also, who else is pumped about the wealth of new HCs we're getting soon? Hell on Earth omnibi, Hellboy in Hell, and Abe Sapien omnis. I just hope they start to do more of that with Lobster Johnson, Witchfinder and some of the single-trade spinoffs like Sledgehammer & Frankenstein, what have you.

I get that that's wishing for a lot, but the formats have just been so very nice for most everything else. The existing omnis and library editions package it up so well.
>>
>>92193285
Nah, my guess is the BPRD is going to be butting heads with the Russians now that the demon loli is back in action.
>>
>>92176547
friggin cunt. at least devon was not annoying with every character
>>
>>92193429
I dunno, I feel that since Mignola changed his mind about the whole "Hellboy in Hell is where I want to leave Hellboy for years" thing he might end up using him to end the story and tie everything together nicely.

I mean, what does Varvara getting into the game change so dramatically as to start a whole new cycle?
>>
>>92193285
I think the devil will be Varvara, not Hellboy.
I can't wait to see what happens next, though
Devon is in charge. They captured Abe. Liz is the only one that's part of the "old guard", after the Broom generation. Liz is out cold, even.
Iosif, Kate, Johann, Panya all dead. We still have Howards, who is planning something, and the crazy old coot, who is in league with him. Giarroco is still not dead, right? Any other 'namefag' that's still alive?
>>
>>92178689
wasn't Abe the one who read ? there was even a short story when Bruttenholm was teaching him
>>
>>92194081
Like... named agents who re-occur often?

Strode, Nichols, Gervesh...Stass is alive, but not that prominent, I believe.

That's about all I can think of at the moment.

>>92194151
Yeah, Hellboy only really cared about certain types of stories. Mostly ones where he could imagine himself punching people.

Abe was more studious in general... though he did stop himself from learning magic when offered the chance, via Strobl's book.

... and he has Abe at his disposal. The Russians probably fell apart with Iosif. Who is alive, if anybody? I'm talking about the cults and groups and organizations.
