I love genndy heavy handed approach to stuff, makes everything hit like a brick.
We got the implications of penis face a few episodes ago, there was no need to actually state it and explain the joke, but he did it anyway
We get that there is romantic undertones in this chapter, most writers would end it with a stare, or a implied kiss. Genndy gives us a 30 sec scene of them both making out.
It does breaks expectation, and make me laugh a lot.

I'm interesting to see how it plays out. They've spent a lot of this season building this relationship. I would have preferred it stayed platonic as I enjoyed the friendship between them. I've been saying from the beginning that /co/ has desperately wanted this to become the new Legend of Korra, but I'm neither smart enough nor autistic enough to write it as well as he did.

Season 5 has flaws but it's a better conclusion to an favorite of mine than I could have ever hoped for.

People hate it cause they just don't want Jack to be happy. They didn't want him to spare Ashi. They didn't want him to carry her around. They didn't want Ashi to turn good. They didn't want Ashi to stop Jack from committing suicide. They didn't want Ashi to be willing to risk her life to protect Jack while he meditated. And lastly, they didn't want Jack to get to kiss anybody. /co/ simply wants to keep all the bad stuff Jack goes through, but not have any of it resolved, while not giving ANY suggestions on how the series should end then. Just go through any Samurai Jack thread, and the posts go like this:

Because it feels bland and full of cliches, I watched in animes written for the enjoyment of teens.
It feels like fanfiction.

And the worst thing about it was that the first three episodes were absolutely amazing in terms of art and tension.

I can't imagine why that'd be. Maybe I consume more or different media but from episode one of this season I knew Ashi's redemption was inevitable; even putting aside the fact that completely irredeemable female villains are something of a rarity, they spent too much time on her as a child for her not to be a deuteroganist and being a deuteroganist immediately closed off any story path where she'd remain a villain. (See Zuko for example). The second they had that scene of her looking out into nature I knew how her redemption arc would go.

And I knew there was going to at least be a one night stand because a part of the standard hero's journey is getting the girl. Avatar, How to Train Your Dragon, Harry Potter, hell, even Shrek, any story with a nominal male hero has to involve him at least having a girlfriend because a part of their mark of success is implied sexual prowess. Jack couldn't possibly end the series a virgin with no game.
