The conclusion is not going to be happy for Jack. Genndy himself said it was going to be bittersweet.

But for the first time since he lost his sword, Jack is happy again. That's what made this episode so great. We got to see him have his last decent moment before the climactic struggle against Aku.

What did you want, a ten-episode battle between Jack and Aku?

The entire point of the season has been to show Jack at his absolute lowest point before he regains his resolve and fights Aku for the last time. Ashi was necessary for his character arc, since Jack could have ignored any other prior side character trying to snap him out of his funk.

There are only two reasons to be pissed about supposed "filler" and the season's pacing issues: You hate Ashi because she is a female character, you hate Genndy for not delivering your specific vision of his story. That's it. The pacing may be a tiny bit rushed, but that is a minor complaint at best, since it does nothing to actually "ruin" the show.

You went into this season expecting GLORIOUS GODLIKE KINO. You got a serialised "Samurai Jack" story with some blood and mature themes added on. If you need to feel pissed at anyone, feel pissed at yourself for having such high motherfucking expectations.

The Omen did not need a massive explanation. The fight with Ashi's mom could have been longer, granted, but it still served its purpose - to finalise Ashi's growth away from the influence of Aku. The resolutions of both Jack's search for the sword and his fight with the Daughters of Aku also did not require any more time than they received. And while Aku remains a central part of the ongoing storyline, he was never needed for much of anything until these last two episodes. The show did not "forget" his depression; the writers chose not to dwell on it because the show did not need to do so.

In fact, all of your issues with the pacing seem to revolve around the idea that the show should have overexplained plot points that did not need overexplaining. What does it say about you when you think The Omen, of all things, needed a bigger backstory than "it is a manifestation of Jack's guilt and despair"? More? He literally goes from beard Jack to Regular Jack in an episode, and the Jack willing to kill of episode 3 was completively changed to Normal Jack in episode 4 aside from 1 scene. Then never to return again until his death. The Daughters of Aku are assassins birthed and raised specifically to kill Jack. The Omen is a manifestation of Jack's guilt and despair over his straying from his purpose. Because I understood all of that shit in the time it was presented.

They are reflections of each other as they're strangers in the same land. Jack from the past, and Ashi from seclusion. The Jack fishead scene only drives the point further especially when it's evident to Ashi that Jack didn't know shit about the food.

They were both dropping future spaghetti hard this ep and both were aware of the implications and awkwardness of being in one another's intimate space. The only exception being the nude scene which could be chalked up its insignificance in the middle of battle. She knew to cloth herself after the waterfall scene.

Ashi was able to spend a good portion of her journey alone, coming to terms with her own identity and interacting with others. Honestly the deer scene could've been reversed with Jack spotting some a couple of alien looking blobs and wondering if the one blob was about to eat the other only to see them engage in some freaky monster sex instead. The point of the deer scene was show how fixated the daughters mindset was around Aku and to foreshadow Jack/Ashi.

I already told you, it's not about the explanation, it's about the execution, they writting in the season regarding the Sword, the Assassins and The Omen isn't bad perse (although the Omen is arguable for not being good) it's just that it was poorly executed due to rushed pacing and poor storytelling.

I seriously doubt Jack is going back. What will likely happen is that Jack will travel to the portal to find it destroyed and the Guardian dead.

Jack will resolve to fight Aku in the future with the new army the Scotsman's daughters have raised. With Jack leading it they will fight their way into Aku's fortress where jack will defeat him. I don't think Ashi needs to die or anything like people are saying in order for the ending to be "bitter-sweet". I think the very fact that Jack realizes he can no longer return to save his people, or undue Aku's evil will be the bitter part, and the fact that Jack can now make the world a better place, and the fact that he has Ashi will be the silver lining on the otherwise dark storm cloud.

All together I'm fairly certain that Jack will fight with the army to defeat Aku, and I'm also fairly certain that he will not be going back to the past to save his people.

Not every little bit of character development requires a whole goddamn episode. If you want that, go watch "Steven Universe".

My ending would be Jack realizing that if he gets back, back to the past, then everyone he ever knew, including Ashi, would get erased but he's forced to go back and finish what he started anyway.

Jack beats Aku, goes back in time, undoes the future and stays immortal because of his exposure to the time travel. Eventually he wanders the land like he always did and helps build a brighter tomorrow with his knowledge of the future, becoming just as great a hero in his own time, until eventually enough time passes and he meets his old allies again, this time they all have lived much happier lives in a world without Aku, and finally reunites with Ashi.

Series ends with Jack saying something like "Gotta keep moving forward"

One thing about this week's episode I really enjoyed is that it was probably the s5 episode that was the most similar to the CN run in pacing. There's even a lot of quieter moments in it the more plot-driven episodes of s5 didn't manage to deliver.

Makes me wish there were more episodes so there could be more episodic "enemy/location of the week" stuff as that's what Samurai Jack used to excel at.

Well that's true for Season 5 as a whole. While I don't think it's bad, a lot of it could have been handled better. Problem has been more pacing and delivery than the plot or characters, at least to me.
Would probably have worked better as either the 2-hours movie it was initially planned to be or a longer (15-24 episodes) season than just 10. it's in that awkward place where it can't be too condensed like a movie would but it also doesn't have enough breathing room like a longer season would allow.

I think Jack and Ashi are romantically involved because they're mirror images of each other, just from different perspectives. They're both born of hardship and feel like they have to follow their destiny, yet they sidetrack each other as romantic devices. The more they interact, the more they find they have in common - perhaps their lack of romantic experience is what's so driving. Jack wants to fix the world, and Ashi wants to experience the world, which essentially falls under the same role of defeating Aku.

Think of it this way: unless Jack got frisky with hookers at some point, he hasn't had feelings for a woman since Ikra. 50+ years since he's had any interest in a lady, and the first one turned out to be Aku in disguise. Not to mention how hard Ashi tried killing Jack in the first place. The poor man has been *deprived*. No matter how noble you can be, the heart will still ache with time for love.

Only problem is, Jack hasn't seemed to have figured out that if he goes back to the past, he effectively erases Ashi. Ashi as she is is a product of Aku being present for half a century. Even if Jack were to go back and wait for Ashi to be born, however unlikely that is, he'd be an old man by then. I don't know if he can bring her through the portal.

100% betting that Jack will have to choose between being with Ashi or realizing his true goals.

I can give you that, but still the bulk of that subplot wasn't geared towards building sexual tension like the tiger fight was. It gave us some nice shots and a lengthier action sequence than previous episodes.

Sure, I can understand that. But, I don't think she's really that bad. She was developed pretty well but due to the pacing of the show and the fact no one expected a romance at first, her presence feels like it's taking up space, more or less. I mean, we've only got 43~ minutes left of Samurai Jack to watch and look where we are right now. That's a lot of shit going down in 43 minutes. No one's going to see as much Guardian, Scotsman, or epilogue as they want to, and Ashi, though moreso the romance subplot rather than a fault of Ashi herself as a character, is partly at fault.

I found this episode enjoyable for the direction and art of it, and I liked the whole prison and monster part. Reminded me of the old episodes.
For the romance stuff I just tought it was rushed but acceptable, in the beginning of the episode I thought it would be "oh look they're awkward" the whole episode but it wasn't (and when it was, with Jack reacting to Ashi being naked, it's in character with what Jack would do in a situation like that). Better than what I expected at this point.

But then people are talking only about shippingshit and how it destroyed the show and foaming over whether or not their relationship should be romantic. I'm pretty sure someone who isn't watching the series and just seeing this shitstorm unfold is getting the impression it's much more romance focused than it is, which I find a bit amusing.
Romance isn't ruining the show for people as much as their own obsession with that aspect in detriment of everything else is.

Yes it's funny, but it doesn't mean it's the way it should have been handled, especially after those initial episodes setting us up for a really fantastic serious-toned plot, not to mention, the Guardian portal in the old series setting us up for a serious-toned ending, and the Scotsman's army showing up... therefore Jack having an army to command like the guardian portal alluded to... like yes, funny jokes. Hooray, but that is NOT a substitute for what was necessary for a proper conclusion.

I found the episode to be enjoyable regardless of that. I didn't care one way or another about the romance, and still not really care. Both shipping and anti-shipping people both blow this thing out of proportion and ruin the show to themselves, that was what I was getting at.

I agree there was a quality drop after the first few episodes, but disregarding the fact that I expected it (you bring your A game at the start to suck people in), do you really think the quality dropped enough to justify the shitshow discussing this series became on the last month, and that it is entirely the fault of a romantic subplot like people are arguing?
