From what I understand, Japanese things don't ever include accents other than regional Japanese ones. The only exception are Chinese accents. If you watching the original Japanese version of Hetalia, the only character with an accent is China.

I live here in Japan. And honestly aside from a huge Disney obsession Japan's relation to american cartoons is no different than any other country.

In regards to interesting dub stuff though. For South Park they gave every character a Kansai dialect cause it was the only way they felt they could convey the course and foul language into Japanese well.

Because the official dub is atrocius.
When a new dubbed episode is released, we only watch it ironically, to see how they fuck up next.
The dub really is bad, voice actors randomly change, a lot of lines and jokes are wrong, and obviously the censorship.
Also, they sometimes translate episode names weirdly...
Like "Back to the Barn" is translated as "Dancing from the barn" (тaнцyeм oт capaя)

Honestly, I haven't seen much interest in TLH at all among Japanese westaboos or whatever you want to call them. You could probably count on one hand the number of TLH art pieces on Pixiv that are drawn by actual Japanese artists.

The fact that Nickelodeon has zero presence in Japan right now doesn't help, and shows which are decently popular like Gravity Falls or Adventure Time have the full weight of Disney and CN behind them. They also have a cuter and softer look to them, which probably appeals more to them than TLH's look unfortunately.

In regards to Boondocks: On one hand I agree. On the other hand, a lot of people besides America are well aware of rap culture, famous black entertainers, and America's constant tension with the black community. It isn't a show like Veep or Silicon Valley where if you don't know the subject matter, they are basically speaking gibberish. Boondocks does a good job of being funny even if you don't relate to or understand 100% of the context.

However, the line gets drawn between those who show it in the public and those who keep it to private gatherings.

If you're a Youtuber, you use a vocaloid to read out what you say so people don't find out it's you.
If you orchestrate some music track, you censor your face and make sure your school uniform is not seen.
If you do cosplay, you hide them while you go to the con and only change once inside.

And so on. Hobby = otaku, but you are supposed to hide it, keep your power level hidden like your life depends on it. Because it does.

There are quite a few Japanese people who like happy tree friends, maybe not popular outside of internet people, but yeah.

Colorful horse show has a ton of followers, there is an entire twitter community based around this fandom. Uotapo is probably the most well known artist of the bunch. South Park and MLP gets subbed into English almost as soon as they air in English, so you can tell the fandoms for them are active.

Avatar the last-air bender and Korra are both unpopular and are barely ever brought up. Zim, likewise, is pretty unknown.

As far as comics are concerned, Ive read some of them say stuff along the lines of them not liking it because "its all shonen" and that stories that never end are uninteresting to jump into, so cape-shit is unpopular.

Old slapstick like tom and Jerry are pretty popular. So is Disney.

One thing I've noticed about most Western animated cartoons that I see lots of fan art, cosplay, and doujin from Westaboos of is that they usually seem to be either Disney or CN shows. Not sure why that is. Nickelodeon is just much rarer.

That said I've suddenly seen lots of Invader Zim lately. I do remember that there was an extremely short lived Japanese dub of Invader Zim. I started suddenly seeing Westaboo art of it before the new movie was announced, so I'm going to assume that a new fan translation there of the series or new comics among certain groups or something spurred the sudden interest and it became a meme.

My Japanese friend once told me all the Scooby cast has different names in Japanese.
Scooby is Kuruppa, Shaggy is Boropin, Fred is Handsome, Velma is Megako, and Daphne is Jenny.

Although western fandom looking at eastern stuff is apparently kinda weird.
I have a friend who is into BL and anime while being raised in Japan but they didn't even know what bara was till I mentioned it once, even though they like DBZ and are into baras now but they didn't know that was even a thing, also a lot of the stuff that is popular here doesn't really show up on their radar over there it seems.
Like certain mangaka they know and love have no translations in English but some creators are super popular over here are literal whos over there.

This is sickening. I'm so tired of yellowwashing in media! Every time they cast an Asian actor in a voice role that was meant to be played by a white actor it's taking away work and denying adequate representation of minorities. It's like they're actively trying to get us to forget that these people exist!
