As a Missourian, the two funniest aspects of the Tornado scene are:
Clark could have just ran up and threw his dad to the ground and covered him. People and objects survive tornadoes in weird ways All The Time. Everyone woulda just said "Huh, that was damn lucky!"

People out here understand that standing under an overpass is no protection at all. It's a terrible idea. People have survived by climbing up into the framework below the roadbed and hanging on for dear life, but just standing underneath one is actually counter-productive, as it will just channel the wind through it even faster.

I also enjoyed that the Tornado didn't have strong enough winds to muss up Jonathan's hair until it was "right upon him" and disintegrated him.

The worst thing they do with Superheroines is turn them into "Team Mom".
Why do they have to be the "serious team-mate" all the fucking time? This is the only thing Suicide Squad got right.
Why do studios think anyone wants to watch some stoic supergal?

This more than anything is why WW will crash, because her character is the straight-man to Pine and fatso's funvee.

>yondu didnt
Yondu did more than risk his life, he outright sacrificed himself to save Peter.
Jonothan told Clark to use his head and stay hidden even if his heart told him to save people. Yondu told Peter to follow his heart because it was stronger than his head.

I seriously choked up a little when he gave that speech to Rocket.
"I know EXACTLY who you are, because YOU'RE ME."

It's interesting that a memory of Rocket popped up, given that they spent half the movie arguing incessantly.
>>
>>92143978
Unless they've altered their origins, Howard is 70's character originally from Duckworld, which got retconned to a world of humanoid animals, but I've never seen it said that it's the same world that Rocket came from.

It's certainly not the case in MCU, where Rocket is an Earth animal and Howard an alien, but I'd like for you to point me to any reference of Howard coming from the Keystone Quadrant.

Gamora is boring (an I mean this in a completely /pol/ free way) because she's the straight-man who's the best at everything.

Yes, that's exactly the lesson Pa Kent drove home to Clark. Not that saving a busload of his schoolmates from a horrible death might be bad because it would draw attention, not the Clark should stand by while his mother watches her life-mate get torn to shreds because "someone might notice and that'd be bad for the family".

The movies have the same benefit as the post-Annihilation team; they are obscure, non-corporatized characters with the freedom to breathe. People don't come into their story with expectations on how they're supposed to act and respond.

And both had a good creative team willing to have genuine fun with their oddball crews.

Their bankable status has killed them in comics; now writers want them to be the next X-Men or something.

>>
>>92157386
And you would be right
>>
>>92157150
the Wonder Woman trailer pretty much gives you the whole movie and all of Diana's tricks. All that's missing are some of the Big Explosions and the inevitable transformation into Awkward-looking CGI Ares.

The film sells itself as "girl in leather skirt deflects bullets, then does it some more, and look she has a sword!" and my God, all those poor actresses having to ape Gadot's terrible accent. And easily the cringiest humor yet seen in a cape movie. Pine and fatgirl have to play comedy off this Israeli plank, I pity them.

You could feel the enthusiasm being sucked out of the theater. I think they may have been better off not having any trailers for it, just posters with the symbol.
>>
>>92157467

The strength of GotG against Thor or Ant-Man is that you can take one or two of the Guardians out of scenes for half an hour and the remaining cast is pretty damn entertaining, both on a comedic and action level.

Also, Yondu came to the rescue in the first movie, as you'll recall.

Family is the entire theme of the movie though; the Ravager family, Guardians family, and the family troubles of the individual teamates.

You have to take good family with bad family; and sometimes you have to detonate your Father's cerebral cortex because he's a universe-murdering megalomaniac.

"YOU HAVE TO SAVE THE MARTHA!!" is ham-fisted.

I liked how Gamora's family arc gets kind of fucked up if you really think about it:

>>
>>92158551

>Yondu's parents sold him into slavery. Yondu found a surrogate dad in Stallone.

>Peter's father was an evil planet with a beard. Peter's real dad is Yondu

>Drax's daughter was killed by Thanos. Mantis reminds him of his daughter, and he slowly morphs into a dad for her.

>Rocket's creator never cared about him, and he's fucked up over it. He finds Yondu a kindred spirit and even kind of a mentor

>Groot's biological family is never referenced in the movies. Rocket's become his dad.

I think the reason Gamora and Nebula's scenes feel a bit disconnected from the rest of the movie is because they don't find a "real" dad to replace Thanos, and that arc is about sisters.
>>
>>92158879

Oh, and the David Carradine jokes. Quill still has the Carradine photo because it wasn't until the end that he realized Yondu was his real dad all along.

Well, the next Thor has Hulk, who is a fan favorite in action and the sparse comedy scenes he gets.

And the next Antman has Wasp who... uhh. At the least is supposed to be better at using the powerset, so she'll probably manage the combat elements well. And the last two movies with them showed that the absurdity of the Pym particles make for entertaining fights.
>>

Ego planted what were basically pieces of himself on all the planets he visited after assuming a physical form and realizing that he has no real ability to connect to or appreciate any of the other living creatures in the... let's say galaxy, but the implication is maybe universe. His plan was to transform all life giving planets into extensions of himself, basically becoming the universe. When he explains his plan, he specifically states that the goal of it is, "Eternity." Which is of course, the cosmic personification of the universe in Marvel comics, pictured to the left.

He wanted to BE the universe itself, because he was already godlike and was unable to find meaning in anything else.

Which is also why he killed Quill's mom. She gave him meaning beyond his mission and he realized that if he let himself indulge in love with her any further, he'd be unable to bring himself to destroy her world, kill her family/descendants/friends and so on.

This is also why he was so happy that Peter was able to use the same power that he could and tried to keep giving him a chance to join up. Even when Peter attacked him, he was just going to use him as a power source for a thousand years. They'd still be immortal, and he'd let him out when the job was done. Peter is an affirmation and reminder of the feelings that he felt towards his human lover. He doesn't like what he did to her, but he'd already set his mind on becoming a super-god, so he wasn't going to let emotion get in the way. But with Peter, he could potentially have it all.

It really would not.
It made for a damn good comic book, but it would have been another Dredd as a film.
Movies have to appeal more broadly than the LCS crowd.

DnA Guardians would make for a pretty good cable or streaming series.
But the run is just too reliant on too many characters and too much going on with tertiary characters to make a good 2 hour movie.

It'd be Green Lantern all over again; and no one wants that (except Johns).
>>
>>92160442
You realize Dan Abnett was on set to consult and that the DnA run was the primary source material for the movie, right?

it didn't start until after Civil War and wasn't involved with Secret Invasion at all
>>

Primary inspiration, obviously.
However the characters themselves have entirely new characterizations (except arguably Nebula and Gamora), and it only takes the faintest story elements from that run.

The original Guardians of the Galaxy shares a LOT with the DnA run in terms of theme. It was a story about an unlikely group saving the galaxy from a threat they really had no business fighting... because no one else could or would.

When Mantis is explaining and demonstrating her powers she says "I can make stubborn people compliant" or something along those lines and glances at Gamora as she says this. What if the reason Gamora succumbs to Peter's attempts to woo her, and his pelvic sorcery, because Peter had Mantis manipulate her? It would somewhat mirror the DnA run where Peter has Mantis manipulate everyone into joining the team.
Gamora could then find out and turn against the team, fully showcasing how dangerous she is since they've been skimping out on that a lot. Gunn also recently said Gamora will have a much larger role in Vol. 3. Gamora and Peter did feel pretty forced so it could be explained pretty well if Gunn does something like this.

desu Gunn used a shit load of stuff from the DnA run, some of you guys act like he completely ignored it.

Rocket is an anthropomorphic cyborg Raccoon who doesn't even remember Earth, Cosmo is a psychic doge with a Soviet background.

They really don't overlap at all. This is a team with multiple green blade assassins.
>>
>>92160973
>This is a team with multiple green blade assassins.

Gunn really embraced the comics side of things in Vol 2, prime example being Yondu's comic-accurate 'prototype' fin so I wouldn't put it past him adding the full helmet/mask from the comics. Uniforms too pls, it'd be a great way of honouring Yondu if they wore a variation of the Ravager garb like they did in the first.

About 5.

Kraglin tries using Yondu's arrow and accidentilly stabs Drax.

The Ravagers are now reassembled and ready to wreck shit.

Baby Groot is now Moody Teenage Groot.

Stan Lee is telling stories to the Watchers (who get bored and walk off).

And Ayesha has gone off the deep end, pouring resources into a genetics project to create a superweapon for killing the Guardians after she blew up her fleet and mocked her repeatedly. We see a close up of the oddly-familiar birthing pod and she muses "I think I'll call him... Adam."

Remember how both Hydra and Howard Stark developed super weapons and Acr reactor respectively, after researching the Cosmic Cube? It meant it is possible that while the Power Stone is in their possession, the Xandarians could have done similar research to develop a more powerful Nova powersource.

That was why he was never allowed to protect Peter as his adopted son, but had to come up with excuses. Yondu was always in danger because he was too good a man for his position.

Its amazing how people are able to ignore all the atrocities a character has done only because of muh fun and quips.
>>
Did anyone else feel like the cg in this movie was so bad that it took them out of it at key points.

Rocket and Groot look great, but some sections of the movie just look so bad that I couldn't help but focus on it. The scene where Quill shoots Ego and his body is falling apart, the blue sludge covering the planets, the awful cg body when drax is being whipped around in space and smashed into trees. It just looked weirdly terrible in a lot of places, especially compared to the first movie.
>>
>>92162539
I got loud at the Watchers too, same with the shot of Ego with his face and everything, as well as Adam. It's so cool that they can still use SOME Fantastic Four stuff.
>>
Is Ego being Peter's father one of the only times where the MCU doing their own thing turned out BETTER than what was in the comics?
>>
>>92162722
In the post credits scene he references being a deliveryman in Civil War
>>
>>92162744
The only one I noticed that was not done too well was Drax being whipped around, Ego getting shot to death was great in theaters

Ego almost didn't happen if Fox didn't need Marvel's approval for changing Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Fox let them use Ego in exchange for approval
>>
>>92162744
Looked fine to me, but I saw it in 3D from the third row.
>>
First 40 minutes or so were ridiculous in terms of quips.

Also that arrow is pretty much my favourite weapon ever.
>>
>>92162791
Fox and Marvel being willing to work together and cut deals like that is good for both of them.

Contrast with fucking Sony being turbojews over Spider-Man. I'm still shocked Homecoming is happening at all.
>>
>>92162819
Marvel REALLY wants the rights to Spider-man back, apparently Sony at one point offered it back for something worth more than Star Wars
>>
>>92162801
It was just Guardians being Guardians. They quipped all the time in the 2008 run too. They just don't have a serious character like Adam there to ground them and be the more serious voice so it feels like *too much* quips. But there's nothing wrong or nothing out of character of them quipping.
>>
>>92162760
There's a lot of things in the MCU handled better than the comics. The MCU has its shit together, unlike Marvel
>>
>>92162845
Sony thought a Sinister Six or an Aunt May movie were billion dollar ideas.

They grossly overestimated how much money this franchise could earn them. Although to be fair that's mainly because they were making them. Maybe a good studio could make that kind of bank with the IP.
>>
>>92162744
u a newfag who wasn't here for reboot and beast wars
>>
>>92162879
I still can't believe they wanted to do an Aunt May movie. All the characters in Spider-man, fucking Aunt May of all people.
>>
>>92162879
>>92162845
Spider-Man is the top-grossing and most recognizable (read: merchandisable) superhero IP in the world according to quite a few sources.

To execs who've skimmed a Wikipedia article and assume they understand what "today's millennial audience" wants, it must seem obvious to just churn out a bunch of branded films a make bank. Remember, this is the company who seriously considered an idea that was literally "make Spider-Man a social media-conscious, humblebragging EDM fan who posts his pictures via Snapchat". And yes, they explicitly used the term humblebrag.
>>
>>92162862
I don't want to say you're right, but you're not wrong. The only writers at marvel who have their shit together right now are kelly and ewing
>>
>>92159118

I remember the theater busting a gut at "Zardu Hasselfrau" and the magic boat.

Then again, it were a theater full of normies, they laughed at all the jokes and quips, half of them left during the end credits.
>>

It's Quill and Ego trading statements as they come to terms that they are antithetical to each other.

I don't understand this kino you speak of. But I believe it is the truest of its kind.

I just saw it.

So some of those various people attending the funeral in the end are going to be in Ragnarok, right? I thought one of the girls looked like the one from the Ragnarok trailer.

Also, does the giant skull in the first movie have anything to do with this Celestial guy?
>>
>>92164381
It's a skull of a Celestial.

>I thought one of the girls looked like the one from the Ragnarok trailer.
Nah just similar hair. They're not the same character. The lady in Ragnarok is Hela.

>Also, does the giant skull in the first movie have anything to do with this Celestial guy?
Knowhere is the disembodied head of an actual Celestial. People are saying Ego wasn't actually a full Celestial like that, or the one seen at the Collector's, but just so full of himself and egotistic that he viewed himself as a Celestial.

Create Marvel Cosmic as its own sub-studio. Let it put movies out in the Fall so as not to oppress the supreme mouse's release dates.

First movie: Annihilation. Marvel had enough cosmic heavyweights that they could replace the heralds easily. Peter and Richard are the leads, Gamora and Drax are side characters. There are enough space weirdos that Annihilus doesn't need to be used explicitly.

Second movie: Annihilation: Conquest. Form the modern MCU Guardians by making them into a suicide squad to stop the... Kree, I guess? Badoon? Badoon are good punching bags, make it Badoon. Forces the peace treaty of the next movie. Oh look, you even cut out DC's legs from their... amazing... fantastic music video movie film. Set up for Adam and a few other big cosmic names to show up. Don't even need to explain them in detail, since it's the weird parts of space. Since you already have a cosmic setting established, with a "people die" theme, you can drop actors easily.

1st Guardians: Guardians, newly formed, interact with some gigantic weird cosmic shit. Maybe just trying to figure out Cosmo and Knowhere while fighting the Church of Universal Truth. They find/rescue Adam Warlock from it, who grabs Peter and disappears in the end credits.

2nd Guardians: Their numbers swell with weirdos, Peter is missing and Racoon is trying to keep it stable while failing and loudly insisting he doesn't need Peter. Peter comes back and they run a distant-father plotline while trying to seal up cosmic rifts with Adam Warlock.

3rd Guardians: Probably a direct tie-in to Infinity War. Tough to judge from here. But presumably some lightly Thanatos thing. Maybe put Nebula here as one of his commanders who is pacifying nearby systems while Thanos is marching on Earth. Quill convinces his group to help out and provide relief, and thus preventing the full force of Death-boner's armada from reaching the planet. End credit has the Guardians preparing for a planet. Cue 70s rock on speakers
>>
>>92160784
The Badoon are, basically, THE nascent super-power. The Skrull, Kree and Shi-Ar just cannot seem to help themselves from fucking around. Humanity doesn't seem all that interested in expanding influence despite several dozen space faring civilizations living on Earth.

The Badoon have the right level of technology, greed and lack of foresight to try and make a major play after the other major powers died out.
>>
>>92164533
Wrote out a long post for what could basically boil down to Marvel Studios puts out a line of space movies that have their own events similar to the Avengers every few years. They don't even need to make their own sub studio
>>
>>92164636
I think after the next two Avengers movies tie in every series they've done so far, it'll be time to start going in the opposite direction. Break everything up and have the three different worlds, normal, cosmic, mystic, and do crossovers on an as-needed basis but without a big event looming in the background (and tyint directors' hands as they have to make sure to include stuff to set up future movies).

They also recently had the bright idea to finally make a sequel to the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo that people were expecting half a decade ago. Except they're recasting everyone and bringing in some rookie director who thinks half his job is done if he takes the old cast. Oh and they're adapting the fanfic cash-grab fourth book, as opposed to actually continuing Lisbeth's story.

My point being is that the movie-division of Sony is run by complete goddamn morons who don't know anything about producing movies based on hit IPs, to the point where you almost wonder whether some other company has placed their stooges within Sony to try and bring them down from within.

Sony Pictures hired Tom Rothman from Fox who had sealed Deadpool's mouth, turned Galactus into a cloud, and refused to fund the Deadpool movie. Tom Rothman isn't a stooge, he is literally just BAD. And Sony hired him to run Sony Pictures.

http://variety.com/2016/film/news/sony-executives-disillusioned-tom-rothman-1201904528/
Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton and the company’s human resources department have fielded protests about Rothman from more than a dozen executives, according to an individual briefed on the showdown, who declined to be named discussing internal company business.

The unhappy Sony executives report that Rothman has made their lives untenable with his micro-management and obstreperous manner, which they say has also alienated talent agents, producers, directors and actors, many of whom are now loathe to bring their projects to Sony, the sources said.
