I have a story related to this. My uncle brought his nephews over, 5-10yrs old. I wanted them to stay out of trouble so I set up my Wii for Mario Kart for them. Naturally they all pick manliest characters Mario, Bowser, and DK. Toad and Peach were ignored completely.

There's a culture to this, that goes deeper than just the Home or TV.
