Steve Gerber made the same thing with Howard the Duck back when he returned to work for Marvel in the 90's, by hijacking him and his girlfriend Beverly to Image Universe while letting soulless copies of them wandering in the Marvel Universe. Unlike Mantis though, Howard didn't have many appearances outside Marvel books.
