It only got decent reviews because it was coming hot off the heels of Spider Man 3. Utter mediocrity looked good compared to Raimi losing his fucking mind for 2.5 hours.

ASM1 is a beat-for-beat ripoff of the first Raimi film with all the good bits taken out and replaced with generic franchise setup threads. It felt like a pilot for a crappy Spider-Man TV show.
