This seems like the place to ask this: I just finished the Thrawn trilogy and it was pretty good. 7/10, 8/10 with nostalgia. Do the EU novels all go downhill from here or is there more out there that doesn't suck? (I've tried getting into the EU before now, but kept grabbing books that were beyond terrible)

There are quite a few enjoyable novels with varying degrees of canon butchery, but for the most part, yes, it's all downhill from there.

Some semi-decent examples include the X-wing/Rogue Squadron series, the Bounty Hunter Wars, the Courtship of Princess Leia, the Han Solo Adventures, and Shadows of the Empire. There are more readable entries out there but that's just what I recall off the top of my head.

A lot of the EU is very good.
I'd check out some of the PT era standalones (Yoda: Dark Rendezvous, Dark Lord, Plagueis, etc.)

As for post ROTJ, a lot of that is very good too.
I would reccomend that after the Thrawn Trilogy you read the NJO.
The Bantam stuff is mostly 'eh' outside of a few great books.

I'd say Wedge's gambit is pretty good. It has to be in a sense, since it was one of the earliest ones not to feature a main character from the films. It's basically Top Gun in space, and Top Gun is pretty cool.

Whether it's walkers or speeders is irrelevant. It's a necessary cinematic trope in the saga to film two opposing armies rushing towards another in battle. It doesn't matter if its troops, AFVs or spaceships, it's just how filmmaking works.

I'll echo what others have said here.

Kylo Ren was definitely a standout as villain. As cool as Vader and Palpatine are, there isn't any real points of empathy. With Kylo, I can emphasise with his struggle, and he's a real interesting and unpredictable character.

There's also the First Order aesthetic. I like the resurgents, their stormtroopers and the TIE's. By extension, this also refers to Hux, whom I adore. Have always had a thing for NFU's like Krennic and Piett, and it was good to see another being given such prominent screen time.

Another thing I liked was the trail of speculation. Not to say it was nearly as good as ESB, TFA grabbed my interest in a similar way ESB did, through having plot threads I'm eager to see resolved. Like the lightsaber, Kylo's future, Luke, Finn, Rey and the rest of that.

Oh, and add into that Poe and Finn's dynamic. There was something magical about that scene between the two. Sure, in retrospect, it doesn't make much sense, given Finn's meant to be indoctrinated and all, but their first scene together. I loved it.

Yeah, it worked surprisingly well for something that was so brief. It's a shame Poe isn't anywhere near as interesting to watch anywhere else in the movie.

Yeah, even Isaac couldn't make Poe interesting when all his character has going for him is "flies and shoots good." He just ends up being "ace pilot guy" and nothing else.

The comic is even worse because you don't have Isaac at all, and the plot makes Poe go from "ace pilot guy" to "resistance guy who just kind of reacts to shit." They seem to be setting him up for more in the last issue and I'm guessing this will tie in with his becoming more of a leader in 8, but Poe is still a boring character with no hook whatsoever.

I can empathise with him because he's an emotional wreck. Kylo is clearly a kid way out of his depth, and some very real issues. He's a villain with a human face, unlike Vader whose a brooding sociopath, or Palpatine whose a madman. Kylo is a boy trying to justify himself among hostile peers and to a man, whom he hopes will validate him.

Eh, I'm waiting to see just what motivated Kylo to go down this path. Right now he's interesting but not particularly intriguing because all we have about his story is that he wants to be like grandpa for vague reasons. We don't know exactly where Han/Leia/Luke went wrong with him or just what Snoke told him, so he's kind of a cipher with some fragment of a story but it's not really enough yet.

A lot of it comes from Christensens performance, and the lack of characterisation during the films. For me, Anakins ultimate fall to the Dark Side during RotS was just like someone flipping on a switch. I didn't feel there was enough material or reasoning there for him to betray his moral philosophy.

If anything, the Clone Wars series amplified that to me. Admittedly, I tuned out during the latter seasons, but for me at least, the additions it made to Anakin's character made it all the more difficult for me to buy that this guy would go and murder all his work colleagues.

We're supposed to go from seeing this guy as a war hero, and a loving husband, to some sociopath who kills his wife, butchers kids and tries to murder his closest friend in about five minutes of screen time.

Let's juxtapose that with Kylo. Unlike his grandpa, Kylo doesn't get much build up. He's built up as a guy with immense ability, like Anakin, but is incredibly self conscious about himself. Adam Driver was able to convey this sort of insecurity and subtleties in a way that felt more identifiable than the acting performed by Christensen. Kylo felt more fleshed out than Anakin (In the movies at least) as a character than he did.

But that could all changed. We know next to nothing about Kylo other than his parentage and Columbining his uncles school, hanging with edgy Nazis and committing patricide. Maybe it is as retarded as RotS. Maybe Kylo ends up being incredibly poorly written, but until then, Kylo sort of has the gift of having no real backstory, so maybe things change.

TL;DR Anakin is a faggot who destroys his life for nearly no reason, and Hayden Christensen sucks ass in the PT. Adam Driver was a better actor IMO, and Kylo was better fleshed out.

I actually like Rey a great deal.

What makes her fascinating is just how disturbed and vulnerable yet simultaneously hypercompetent she is. It's an interesting contrast, she's not so much a FemLuke as she is Inverted Luke. Just like Kylo, actually, just in a different way. She doesn't meet much challenge in external terms, but internally, she's a mess easily on par with AotC Anakin. She is completely deluded, arrogant in a "big fish in a small pond" kind of way, irate, deeply traumatised, desperately craving for connection and acknowledgement and prone to being judgemental and indulging in overconfident impulsivess.

And she's a Force prodigy. Basically, it's one of those "too much power, too fast for an obviously imbalanced individual" kind of situations.

Also, honestly, and this is just on a personal level, I find her a bit more relatable. She's the kind of person who dreams of great things and "what could have been" futures, but then is more than content to just settle in in a lesser life. Despite her talent and perhaps even elitism, she's a textbook case of an underachiever. She loved the stories of the Jedi and the Rebellion, but what she really wants from life is something else altogether. She doesn't crave these things and jumps at the chance for an adventure the way Luke did, she just goes along for the ride, until she is forced to confront the reality and assume the role she fancied, but never really wanted.

Ben had everything going for him. A promising future as a jedi, his parents had made the galaxy peaceful, but like Leia and Han said, when he went off to become a jedi, they lost him. His palette of camera moves was stylistically similar, barring advancements in tech.

Stuff like the shot where the camera faces and moves with the Jedi as they walk in to arrest Palpatine is similar to the shot where the camera faces and moves with Han as they are running through the Death Star.

I know I'm assuming a lot and accentuating a lot of her character traits, when the actual character is far more straightforward, but in lieu of any thorough character establishment, that's all we can do now. Both her and Kylo lack the completeness and substantial introduction their predecessors had in the first movies in their respective trilogies. Finn is the only one of the trio who wasn't undercut by TFA being designed from the scratch as an advertisement for the sequels.

I believe in my reading of her and hope TLJ and IX will bring it all home, but I'm always prepared to be proven wrong as well.

It's because technically speaking, the most important movie in the entire saga so far is Episode 3. It's the catalyst for absolutely everything.

In regards to the current canon media though, they're mostly building around ANH because it was the original movie, and expanding outwards from there.

It wont be like this forever, but Lucasfilm is trying to satisfactorily fill in the gaps, and there is no more important point to start expanding than around ANH.

Remember, they've been doing this for just 3 years. It could get sloppy if they start rapidly expanding between multiple eras. They have to do things slowly, to keep it more consistent.

With Rebels wrapping up, and the comics getting further and further away from ANH, you'll start to see other timeframes more often.

Battlefront 2's story is set from ROTJ to TFA, and I suspect Filoni's next cartoon won't be so close to ANH either.

Legends had a very different approach to storytelling though.

The closest you had to a more refined attempt at consistency was KOTOR and Clone Wars media. (Ignoring the fact that Bioware brushed >>92103840 aside, but that was the EU in a nutshell)

For the most part books, comics, games, they were released all over the timeline with little regard for each other. You hate KOTOR releasing around the same time as Battlefront.

But Lucasfilm is building Canon in a much more delicate manner.

Lets take Hera and Kanan for example. There characters have appeared in quite a bit of media now, all set pre-ANH.

Now this was all made possible because of Lucasfilm specifically focusing media on the pre-ANH timeframe. The result is a much more seamless interconnected media.

Think Shadows of the Empire in Legends. Well Lucasfilm wants that kind of consistency, across EVERYTHING. That's a big task, which is why they're taking it very slowly. They'll give drops of PT/ST content for variety's sake, but focus their attention on fleshing out ANH. This is also in part due to nostalgia. The OT has been a nostalgic focus thanks to TFA, so they're going to ride that at least until the Han Solo movie is done.

By the time the Solo movie wraps up, the ST will be free game, with Episode 9 releasing only half a year later. You'll probably see a lot of ST stuff around that time, cashing in on the ST finale hype.

The Scholastic young adult novels are very good. Basically four separate series with recurring characters:

For world building, I guess the first six or so Young Jedi Knight books (Shadow Academy arc) are kind of important to the setting, since they introduce a lot characters that become important later down the timeline in the NJO. Pic related has them in a single volume.

Likewise, there's also Junior Jedi Knights which introduces Tahiri to the setting, but I dunno how much KJA you can handle at this point.

Boba Fett also had a YA series set during the clone wars. It's ok. Part of the 2003 release wave of clone wars media that was often contradicted by the CGI show, so keep that in mind.
