I feel bad for Azula. She wasn't a "monster" as a little child (no more than Toph is for example). She's very ruthless as a teenager, but that's her culture and she's doing it for her homeland/family (like every other member of the Fire Nation military), on top of having internalized all of Ursa's abuse.

She gets no resolution as a character. She just "goes crazy" and made into a lame 2d boogeyman. Probably the least amount of resolution of any of the major cast. Even Ozai is allowed to sit in prison with dignity ffs.

Her mother considered her a monster at < 9, and generally was extremely emotionally neglectful (see the Search pt 2). She talks to Zuko and listens to Zuko's thoughts/feelings but cuts Azula off (Zuko Alone) or just ignores her unless Azula acts up (Search pt 2).
Its a more subtle, emotional form of abuse vs. Ozai's more physical and blatant abuse of Zuko, but it still really hurt Azula. Azula's not the type of person to say when something really hurts her (does she even talk about how much her friends leaving her hurt?), but she did say her mother's treatment hurt her.

I think Ursa projects onto Azula the way Ozai does with Zuko. Ozai is very fond of Azula and I think he relates to her somewhat. They are both second children and arguably more talented than their older siblings with the "birthright". Ursa sees Ozai's closeness to Azula just like Ozai saw Ursa's closeness with Zuko.

He holds at least some dislike for Zuko because Zuko was such an awful bender. Its because of Ursa's intercession (and the Fire Sages) he didn't adopt Zuko out to begin with.
The Search establishes that his anger and distaste for Zuko is rooted at least in part in Ursa turning away from him. As Ursa's heart strays more (not that she was ever 100% there to begin with, but I think she gave it her best try), he hates Zuko more. (No thanks to Ursa's stupid stupid fake letter just why). Once Ursa leaves, Zuko is skating on very thin ice until he is banished entirely.

I think also he projects onto Azula a bit. That's why he reacts so angrily when Zuko tries to lecture Azula about bending fundamentals or whatever. Zuko, like Iroh, has "birthright" from being the firstborn. Azula is undoubtedly more talented, just as Ozai probably perceives himself to be. He resents Zuko for having "birthright" over Azula, much like Iroh does over him.

I like Ty Lee on her own. Mixed with Azula she's poison. Azula brings out the absolute worst of Ty Lee and vice versa. (At least post breakdown, tbf). Even their adolescent friendship was on very shaky ground considering how fast it fell apart on Ty Lee's side. (Not blaming Ty Lee at all, mind).

Ty Lee doesn't make Azula happy though, at all. Ty Lee hurts Azula horribly. She's one of the worst choices possible you could pick to be Azula's healing buddy, because her toxic relationship with Azula is the worst in the series atm. She's fearful of Azula and physically abusive toward Azula and brings up nothing but emotional pain for Azula.

Better healing buddies include Ozai (as co-healers), Zuko (because even if he pains Azula, he wants what is best for Azula I think), Lo and Li (I guess).....Aang (bending Jesus)....that's it. If you want a romantic partner for Azula to be healed by, you need to make up some OC. The entire purpose of the final Agni Kai was to provide the resolution to her character. She had been conditioned her entire life by her father's power that she was the next heir, it wasn't her culture to prove herself into not getting thrown out of the country. Her obsession with this thirst for power was, in my opinion, built up and presented perfectly in her defeat. Because of this, we see an extreme reaction of denial, rage, and ultimately sadness when she is defeated. not because of "well shes the villian she has to be angry hurr durr" kind of writing, but because getting locked up like clichéd villains was not the ultimate punishment for her, being told "no" to the one thing she strived for her entire life was.

Saying that she was the worst villain is bullshit. She was the best designed villian in the series and you're a dumb ass for thinking that she had no resolution.

Yeah, Azula's downward spiral in the finale was pretty great, I just wish that we saw more cracks before Book 3, since The Beach had her play off her grievances and made it so it could go either way whether she was seriously affected or beyond caring, and the end of The Boiling Rock is what lead to the rest.

Honestly, Zhao's downfall, for what time it had, was better paced and his fatal flaws were displayed at better points in the first season; it was always his pride that got the better of him and as a result that was how he met his end. Azula's lack of love and her want for it is great character content yet feels compressed into the finale, but pacing is an issue book three had as a whole.

I think this scares Azula a bit after what happened to Zuko (she certainly freaks out at the thought of being made into Zuko), but Ozai doesn't punish Azula after Azula even lies to him about the Avatar being alive. Ozai likes Azula, and hates Zuko. He punishes Zuko because he sees Zuko as Ursa's pet. While Ozai's relationship with Azula is not healthy, he does care for her and would never "burn her face".

It isn't that legally wrong, at least not killing the Avatar. It's to further her nation and her family's goals. Yes, as a prisoner, because her father tasked her to do so. And in her first speaking appearance, when her ruse to trick him into sailing back with her failed and they fought back, she was going to strike him with lightning and probably would have killed him if Iroh didn't step in to redirect it.

There likely was a time in the past where they got along as two siblings should have, but by the start of the show she's been indoctrinated with her father's teachings and shows as much mercy to her brother as he did.

Her father is a monarch and so he sets the law. But after Ba Sing Se, she brings Zuko back home and tries to reintegrate him in with the family, telling him to stay away from Iroh so people don't get suspicious of him etc. She teases him (as siblings do), but she's not actively hostile towards him. The Beach, for example, is probably their relationship at its best.
There's no doubt that Azula does love Ozai deeply and will side with Ozai over Zuko 100%, but her relationship with Zuko doesn't end there. Even Ozai takes Zuko back after he hears that Zuko killed the Avatar, giving him full privileges as a member of his family.
And that's before you get into the layers introduced in "the Search" and "Smoke & Shadow", where I think she sees Zuko as a painfully unworthy usurper, or (stupidly) decides that if Ozai and Herself can't get back the throne, then she will manipulate Zuko's reign of fear from the shadows as some kind of stupid ninja ghost (what).

There are tons of layers to their relationship. She resents him for monopolizing Ursas love, she resents him for betraying their Father and taking pity on her while still being so weak himself, but he's still her brother and the Fire Lord.

Ozai, in response, crowns her the New Fire Lord. He loves Azula. Nothing ever suggests that he would "burn her face" if she failed.
Finally, even after the entire Fire Nation falls (right up to the homeland Azula was supposed to hold down), he still bonds and chats with her in prison and gives her the info she needs to find the mother that's been haunting her delusions. He doesn't show anger or spite that she failed at this most important task. And yes, its Ursa that haunts and scares and torments Azula. She's not haunted by Ozai nor does she seem to fear him.

Azula is afraid of failure and Ozai's conditional love and mistreatment of Zuko obviously also scared her, that she might also end up like Zuko. But its very much an indirect threat.
