Best writing. It has the best cultural commentary and episodes with strong emotional cores. Most of my top 10 episodes come from this season.

Best art and animation. In comparison season 1 looks very washed out and unpolished. Season 2 improved on everything. In season 3 they use too many super harsh shadows and extreme facial poses coupled with mouth flaps, giving a lot of characters really ugly looking faces much of the time.

Most outrageous wacky shit. I do prefer Season 1's really smart commentary and emotional character writing, but sometimes you just want to have some fun and see just how much Aaron just said "fuck it."

The ridiculous episodes were there in the earlier seasons. The Hateocracy was no more over the top than Killer Kung-fu Wolf Bitch. Some of the more insane characters of season 3, like LaMilton and the Booty Warriors, had dialogue literally lifted verbatim from actual incidents. On top of that, "It's a Black President, Hey Freeman" was one of the better episodes of the series as a whole. In general Boondocks' impression of Barack Obama was probably one of the most on-point parodies of him in media, since everyone else seemed to go too far in their praise or demonization of him elsewhere.

Yes, the characters shifted more into parodies of themselves: Grandad acted more zany and less responsible in the third season and Riley became a wannabe thug into an actual gangster. But what made the third season still good what that is was actually funny. The timing and humor were still there.

Season 4 was just awful.
