Didn't that start out as a radio drama or something
This is 4chan.
We are the evil that lurks in the hearts of men.

Yep.
In fact the Shadow and Captain Marvel were probably two of the most popular characters at the time.

I actually listened to a few episodes of the radio drama. Despite the restrictions that the show had, (The Shadow couldn't actually kill anyone like he could in the pulps) there was some surprisingly messed up deaths in the program.
The one that sticks out in my mind was where he was trying to stop a WWII veteran with PTSD by hypnotizing him to blow himself up with a grenade.

Kind of.
He was at first a mysterious announcer to a radio program. But then people mistook him for a character and kept asking for "that Shadow magazine".
So they hired a magician turned writer named Walter Gibson to write pulps about him.
And then those pulps became so popular they made a radio show out of them.
