It looks to me that the top are character portraits while the bottom are the actual sprites. The simpler shading is required for animation (watch any pre-cgi cartoon, you can easily tell the difference between the painted backgrounds and the actual animated characters by the simpler shading).

No, you are entirely wrong. The bottom drawings are taken from model sheets posted to their twitter. As in, simple, neutral drawings of each character with no shading, because their purpose is for the animators to reference them so they can keep everything on model. The actual sprites will have shading.

Without getting political, I do partly like that they have characters of all shapes and sizes and not just every girl look like Pearl, Lapis, and Garnet, but I'm sure there is at least one girl out there watching this show who wishes there was a gem who had the same proportions as them.

I am calling bullshit on this one. you don't know how animation is actually created. Rebecca Sugar and her friends don't sit in a room, drawing every cel, by hand, personally. there are several stages, with different people doing work at any given stage. finally, segments of the work are sent to animation studios, overseas, to actually draw the cels.

Americans at CN definitely do the storyboards and key animation, but its teams in Korea, China, and other Asian countries who do the grunt fill in work. when you work with tight budgets, you can check every little thing in every episode, but you might not have the time and money to send shit back to be redone.

remember, SU has fuck all for merchandising. Its not like Disney who will pack Target and Walmart with toys, storybooks, stationary sets and apparel. if the team in Singapore draws the characters at a slightly different scale than the team in Korea did, CN just has to run it and hope nobody notices
