>"Have we been here before?"
It all started almost a quarter of a century ago. With Justice Department's ranks severely depleted by the apocalyptic events now known as Necropolis and Judgement Day, then Chief Judge McGruder commissioned the creation of an army of robot judges programmed to bring metal law to the citizens. The Mechanismo robots were built to be the future of law enforcement, but instead, they ultimately spelled the end of McGruder's second and last reign as Chief Judge.
Twenty-five years later, another Chief Judge in her second reign finds herself facing a similar situation. Will history repeat itself, or are there new errors just waiting to be made? And what does all this have to do with Mega-City One's top lawman?
Come with us and find out as John Wagner and John McCrea introduce Judge Dredd to the mechanical marvel known only as... "Harvey"!

Hell yeah.I know it's cliche, but I really loved the way they handled the fog. Last two pages had a bit too much dialogue from the...
thing, made it sound like a two bit villain, but the art more than made up for it.

Evening Judge, thanks for the storytime. Not familiar with this one so that's a bonus.
Always a good time shootin the breeze about comic history with knowledgable anons like yourself, Designated Dave, JSA Storytimer, Preacher Anon, Norrin Radical, Johnny Walker, Dan Dashly, Kind Storyteller, and several others I can't remember atm. I don't know many other readers who share my love of Lady Shiva when she's done justice (which is sadly so rare these days)
Anyways enough rambling, sometimes I feel like folks such as yourself are the best of this board, and why some of us keep coming back. Happy humpday

>>92071697
I haven't loved a robot cop this much since Strongarm in Transformers: RiD.
Harvey was a real hero. And he got dredd to tell him he did good.
>>92071732
And that's the end of Harvey's story... for now. With any luck, the kinks will be ironed out and Harvey and his robo-bros will be back on the streets kicking ass, taking names and saving lives before you can say "grud on a greenie." And who knows? Maybe this time they won't lead to the downfall of the Chief Judge that had them built...No joke, I could spend a solid hour or two talking about and dissecting this single page alone, but I figure I've tortured this board enough.
>>92071800
I want to here your analysis on it though
Hope you enjoyed that bit of fresh metal madness, /co/! And if you liked what you read here, prog (issue) 2023 of 2000AD was a jump-on special with five all-new stories, so if you've ever wanted to get in on the Galaxy's Greatest Comics, now's the time, earthlets! Splundig vur Thrigg!

Drokkin' degenerates!
>>92071758
He proved to be a real human being... well, kinda.
What's the best Dredd crossover?
>>92071833
Ok, so... Hershey knows VERY well that this is thin fucking ice she's walking on. She knows how the original Mechanismo project ended up. She was LITERALLY THERE when Dredd turned in his badge and McGruder had him arrested. So it shouldn't come as big surprise for her that Dredd is against it. But she still tries to make him face facts, and even her words to Shinji, "grud help us when they are", show us that she still holds his judgment in high esteem, despite his stubbornness. She's not an idiot, but she also has to see the bigger picture, which is something Dredd himself flat-out refuses to do in many ways.
There is the matter of Hershey going against Dredd's judgment when it comes to deploying the bots, but here's the thing: this isn't even the first time she's left the fate of a band-aid project in his hands only to have it rejected. She tries her best to send olive branches down Dredd's way and listen to him, but all she gets is grief, gloom and launchpad explosions. And that's when Dredd isn't *actively* trying to sabotage those measures behind her back, like he did in The Beating.
And all of that is super interesting to me in the context of the previous Mechanismo project: Hershey is trying to use the lessons learned from that debacle, not just in regards to the robots but in regards to Dredd. She doesn't want to force him, she wants to convince him, out of a respect for him that has survived literally years of arm-twisting, agenda-pushing and shadowy backstabs. And Dredd, being the cunt that he is, is completely blind to any of that because he's too wrapped up in his own idealized vision of what the city and the judges should be. Honestly, the relationship between these two is just one of the most compelling things in comics right now for me.
Anyway, the big question here is when Wagner will pick this story thread again and how it'll go. Harvey himself came out of this one looking like a champ, so who knows? Maybe there is hope yet.
>>92072166
Most folks would probably point you to the first Batman crossover, Judgment in Gotham, and that's an OK choice. Lovely Bisley art and all. But my two personal favorites are Judge Dredd/Lobo: Psycho Bikers vs the Mutants from Hell, and Judge Dredd vs Aliens: Incubus. The latter is even a really good intro to Dredd and his setting.
God damn that was a great story. Hope you don't get scrapped, Harvey.

>>92072277
I get the feeling this is the last we'll see of the RV's for a while. The next time they are brought back up may be for a bigger storyarc or event, that sees Harvey reunited with Dredd, and potentially giving his robolife to save Dredd or something like that.
It's the only logical end for such a character as Harvey, who is basically a robot copy of Dredd with an empathy chip.
Harvey is a compelling character that stands out among the Mechanismo Judges they have shown. (which was what, 2?) . Which would make the feels all the more potent.
And result in Dredd begrudgingly acknowledging Harvey in hindsight as a proper Judge or something like that.

Worst case scenario, all of the Mechanismos will either be hacked or go insane except for Harvey, and he will die protecting Dredd from the rogue robots.
Best case scenario, Harvey and the Mechanismos help while the Academy is rebuilt, and once cadet numbers go back to normal are used only for special cases and whatnot.
But yeah, with the new Dark Judges series coming soon-ish I wouldn't expect more Harvey until at least 2018.

The Deadworld stuff has wound up being one of my favorite Dredd substories of all time, especially if it's actually canon and not just a big what-if.

>>92084457
I dont see why it wouldn't be canon. deadworld and the entire dark judges universe has never really been fleshed out at all. So its really a prime blank slate for some interesting stories, and HOW it became the way it is is basically the best possible story.
I do like how unlike the main Dredd world, deadworld seems, pre-everything, much closer to current day, which makes it scarier, because it doesnt have the veil of cyberpunk future.
the deadworld judge helmets actually resemble the early dreddworld Judge helmets, which I find interesting, and probably intentional. Seems like Deadworld fell a long time ago, possibly, if we assume both timelines advance at the same time and are similar till the split- they possibly fell back when the main earth Judges still wore similar uniforms
>>92085006
>the deadworld judge helmets actually resemble the early dreddworld Judge helmets, which I find interesting, and probably intentional.
Definitely, the Deadworld Judge helmet design has been around for quite a while and hasn't changed much at all. I thought I had a screencap of the "Join the Justice Department, enforce the law, kill anyone you like (within reason), free lunch vouchers" poster from the old Judge Death origin story but I can't find it- the helmet is the same there, with the angles on the side of the visor and all.
You're right about how its spot in the timeline being much closer to current day making it better, although I'll admit the newest prog dated it somewhat by including hashtags and shit.
I gotta say, Mechanismo is a 10/10 wordplay.Walter's still the best wobot though
>>92085186
I found the talk of the wall being the president's folly dated it a bit more than hashtags imo

>>92090981
>>92093886
>>92093548
Hershey is 50? She doesn't look it. I always thought it was odd she was the chief for being so young. 50 makes more sense. But how old does that make Dredd? I thought Dredd was older than Hershey.
>>92093571
He's such a charming guy sometimes.
>>92093886
I'd fifty her twenty, if you know what I mean. And if you do please tell me because I sure don't.
>>92094073
Dredd is well into his seventies and beyond, if not older. Dredd runs in real time, with the start of each new story/saga/etc being set about 120 years after its publication date, flashback stories and what-ifs notwithstanding.
>>92094073
Ok, so the current year in the strip is 2139. Dredd was "born" in 2064, so he's well in his mid-70s by now. Hershey, meanwhile, was born in 2084, so she's 55.
It's the social life, see. Keeps them young. And also the constant rejuve treatments.
>>92094267
To clarify, the first Dredd as in the character, the second Dredd as in the strip itself. Whoops.

I liked Judge Harvey, and I hope the robot judges come back when the next almost-city-destroying situation comes around.
And honestly, it seems like Dredd's reticence may be reduced if, say, every experienced judge were to have robot partners in addition to rookies. That way Dredd can be a one man battalion instead of a one man squad.

>>92096672
You should see how Mark Sexton draws her.
>>92099392
That's what I'm thinking too, yeah. Team senior judges with Mechanismos so the robots can have a human element to learn from and also protect the increasingly valuable handful of experienced judges who are still alive.
>>92085409
I wouldn't mind a storytime of that, if youve got the time
>>92103385
Also i don't know if a Dredd robot AI can be backed up but at the least anything short of a smashed brain should just call for repair.
Now who gets to design the heuristics for just whom the robot should take a hit for?
>>92103385
that can also go wrong, as we saw when Dredd confronted Jerry.
if the Mechanismo goes bad, even a Senior Judge could have a serious problem on his hands
>>92103866
I feel like there's an easy enough fix for that in either giving senior judges instant killswitch overrides for their units, or programming the units with some kind of Robocop directive to never harm their senior judges. Though of course, that can have its own problems.
>>92103587
I need to go out to buy some stuff, but if Shakaranon hasn't started by the time I get back, we'll see.
>>92103934
what is this and where can I get a fucking figure of it
>>92103934
Hershey has a very good point what with that Judge going bonkers and killing people - human Judges doing that may not be common but when it happens it can get pretty Cal.
(For that Anon requesting big stories I recommend an early, goofier big story like Cursed Earth and Cal's... The Day the Law Died? If you only want three for now I don't think all three should be super serious)
Anyway, generally the same killswitch they have in place for Judges should work for robots, you just need a bigger caliber. And maybe a rapid-response robotic kill squad or four, those are good anyway.
While we're at it let's make kill divisions, give the SJS strategic war capability, dig out massive bunkers we can move the population into and beef up the traffic police.

Animated shorts?
>>92107323
"Judge Death: Superfiend", a series of animated shorts produced by Adi Shankar. Pretty decent stuff, has kind of a 90s MTV vibe to it and adapts a fair bit of Young Death, among other stories. Check the whole thing here if you got half an hour tokill:

>>92106914
After reading the Fall of Deadworld stuff before this I'm honestly extremely surprised Fairfax is actually an original character and not a background one-panel Judge from Boyhood. I know the writers love that kind of continuity shit.
>>92083908

How did Hershey go from this to wanting robots out there on the streets. Has she become secretly addicted to buzzing metal 'personal massagers'?

>>92122779

>>92103385
Course, the Mechanismos behave more human than nearly all the human judges.
Even Dredd, who at times is as close to a regular Judge's bleeding heart liberal, is more of a hardass than Harvey.

>>92125716
I know. It'sss almossst enough to make one want to... end it all.
The new "fall of deadworld" is interesting.
I see they took a bit of criticism on board and paneled the artwork out a bit more than they did on the first run.
Being fall of deadworld Im not expecting a happy ending.
>>92126356
Betting they'll escape to another dimension - possibly Dredd's - and have been in hiding out there since.
Also the little stand alones they did of each of the dark judges were pretty good as well.
I really like the muddy artwork used, it suits the tone of the series.
>>92126385
I doubt it, 2000AD has a habit of building up good strong characters with the full intent of having them ritually disemboweled in front of you.
Pic related.
Oh so related...
>>92126356
I really do love how deadworld parallels the main one, what with the judge child and whatnot
also seeing the evolution of the Dark Judges into what we eventually saw them as, is cool.
>>92126515
>>92126515
They use their background stuff well.
But also with a fair bit of respect for the main storyline.
The way they manage to tie in the old apocalypse war storyline to the days of rage and democracy storys is clever as well.
>>92126515
I liked the "oh shit" moment Sister Psiren has when she runs into Judge Fear in the latest one. It's doing a job of de-goofyfying the Dark Judges which is probably YMMV for some people. I'm not sure about these "the DJs are ancient evils from beyond the stars" hint as yet though, it's a bit of a tired trope.
>>92095405
>unlawful physical contact with a judge
>2 years in the cube
>>92104929
>fancy futuristic talking vid phone

Thanks, OP.
>>92127461
>"So den I asks her, I ask: 'well, what's a *lawful* physical contact wid a judge like den?' An' I wake up inna cubes three days later wid a busted jaw."
>>92130120
And when I meet her next I ask her how that was carnal and she mumbles something about intradivisional fisting and then she gives me another six months.
>>92131040
Anyway, moral o' the story is: invest in robots.
>>92131146
I'm surprised there's no story about a judge afraid to go back on the streets and programming a sexbot in his/her likeness to patrol in his/her place.
For a setting with such advanced animatronics, impersonation by bots is fairly rare.
>>92131638
I imagine the problem with that is that the jig would be up the moment the bot gets shot, or has to take a med test, or even goes into a sleep machine maybe. Robot impersonators are definitely a thing, but not for long, extended periods of time.
The problem with the Mechanismo robots is kinda the problem with Hershey, and even Mega-City 1 itself.
You could call it the downside of continuity.
>>92131768
I think it's less the downside of continuity and more the downside of serialized storytelling in general: nobody wants to read about things going right and things are only interesting when they're going wrong. So projects like Mechanismo are all but destined to go terribly, horribly wrong in the end because it's more interesting than "They were an unmitigated success and made things better for everyone."
But my peeve is that that's pretty much been all of Hershey's second reign: a ton of projects and band-aid programs that have all been varying degrees of failure. Mega-City Confidential, the Ranger program, the Beating, the whole Texas City debacle, now this. And unless you balance that out with a few actual wins, the question becomes "Well why is she still Chief Judge even?". Fuck, they won't even let her be good at defending the city. Look at the end of Enceladus.
Now, it used to be that a lot of those terrible ideas came from civilians in classic Dredd, but now they're all coming from within Justice Dept., and because a lot of writers want to write Dredd being right all the time, it just makes Hershey look more and more incompetent. She desperately needs a big win, a moment of her straight-up saving the entire city on her own accord. But at this rate, I'm worried that'd only happen like two seconds before her dying.
>>92127991
Sshhh. Just roll with it before we get talking about microfilm tubes of illegal comics.
>>92095405
Much thanks.
>>92132268
>each slug holding a whole issue worth of legendary banned comic 2000ad
Oh yes that was a good one.
There is actually an in comic explanation for these retroactive gaffes. Thrag, the omnipotent alien editor of 2000ad, is forbidden by galactic law from revealing too much about our future. So any "mistakes" are simply him protecting us from temporal paradoxes and such
>>92131955
True, but I feel that stopping things from going tits up completely is a win in itself, and a lot of the 500 or so actual voters should be aware of that.
For melancholy I would really want to see a story where it becomes clear that Hershey only keeps Dredd around because she trusts him to kill her if she goes full SJS.
>>92132554
>Thrag, the omnipotent alien editor of 2000ad, is forbidden by galactic law from revealing too much about our future.
If that's the law, then why does Bob Booth exist?POLITICS JOKE. kill me now.
>>92132761
>why does Bad Bob Booth exists?
I guess there is something ever worse coming
>>92132761
Tharg knew telling us would make no difference, so it's all good. For Tharg.
>>92131955
>She desperately needs a big win, a moment of her straight-up saving the entire city on her own accord. But at this rate, I'm worried that'd only happen like two seconds before her dying.
for fuck's sake, why can't things be good for once
>>92132641
I think it's more a matter of her having seen first-hand what happens to people who don't listen to or go against Dredd's word. It's why the "Grud help us all when they are" line from >>92071800 works so well. She knows that for all his stubborn dickishness, Dredd's judgment is very, very rarely ever wrong. So it's better to listen to him every now and then than to go Full McGruder.
>>92134880
>Why should anything go right?!
I'll settle for a single page of her saving everyone. Her showings in the last couple of epics have been, I must say with a heavy heart, pathetic.
>>92135177
It's a classic failure of show don't tell. We are constantly told what a hard case Hershey is but all we see is her failing
>>92135834
>That fucking tease at the start of Every Empire Falls that went fucking nowhere
We're also told that she's a solid, dependable, even excellent Chief Judge, but a lot of times it looks like the city is doing well despite her, instead of because of her. To me, a lot of it is a symptom of new writers who hype Dredd the man too much and end up underdeveloping, forgetting or overlooking his supporting cast. Basically, nobody cares enough.
>>92135925
It's almost the reverse of of what happened with Jane Foster becoming Thor.
There they were trying to make the new girl look good by crapping on the old guy. Here the want the old guy to look good so Hershey has to be incompetent
>>92135925
context of that dialog?
>>92137169
Spoilers for Every Empire Falls: [Spoiler] Dredd was presumed dead during a Cursed Earth mission but was actually kidnapped by Brit-Cit judges looking to further weaken Mega-City One after Day of Chaos.
