I'm only as mad as I am about TFA because it reused as much as it possibly could from ANH, and simultaneously refused to explain anything about the setting that might distinguish it from the original films. Rey being a mystery would have been fine if the world was actually interesting and/or immersive.

Of course, being distinct in any major way would have introduced the risk of being more than ANH 2.0, so there's the rub. Talky scenes and space ships having cool fights are what make sci-fi interesting to me but that's not what the objective for the movie was.

Knights tend to be of a place of an ideal.

Ren as a word, has many roots, cheif among them in english being about the kidneys. Probably not what the Knights of Ren are about. From Egyptian origins however, Ren means "One's secret name, as part of the soul in ancient Egyptian mythology."

So, basically they are just knights who have found their true names. Seeing as Ben changes his to Kylo, and insists that he is a new person, that kind of fits.

In Norse origins Ren can mean clean, or pure. Perhaps they are Knights who will cleanse the galaxy of the taint of the Jedi?

But they could also be dedicated to the preservation of reindeer, I guess.

Ahsoka's place in canon is pretty weirdly positioned and probably the biggest obstacle in introducing her in the movies.

The idea that Anakin had this important relationship with and apprentice which build up over a number of years after Episodes 2, but nobody thought to even mention it in Episode 3 is pretty dumb sounding. It immediately presents the character as completely superfluous.

Expecting general audiences to watch 5 seasons of TV so that they learn why she matters is unrealistic. Expecting most people who consider themselves fans of the films (though maybe not hardcore superfans) to watch 5 seasons of a Cartoon Network show is unrealistic.

On top of that, the introductory TCW movie, which got a theatrical release and is usually most people's first experience of Ahsoka, is hot fucking garbage, so good luck getting folks to hang around for 5 more seasons of that.

I'm fairly surprised she wasn't wiped along with the EU when Disney took over, because she occupies a very untidy placement in the lore, even if she's a fan favorite. And this is coming from a guy who puts Ahsoka in their top 3 favorite SW characters.

That's kind of the point. RotS established what it needed to tell its own self-contained story. Everything else is surplus storytelling - it doesn't mean that it can't improve and broaden our understanding of the events and characters in the core story (which it certainly does), but it's not the minimum necessary.

The canon Darth Vader comic has a really good story and visual direction, but the actual art used in it is atrocious cheap tracing. It's not as intolerable in print hard copy as it is in the high res digital images, but it's still not fun to look at.
