In the first issue, they saved a group of prostitutes, in the grand scheme of heroing, who gives a fuck? Plus one of them died

Nothing happened in the 2nd issue

Then from 3 to like 6, they were in Afghanistan fighting fake ISIS and their big accomplishment was that they stopped, not killed, 1 (ONE) ISIS general and 1 (ONE) ISIS division.
Ignoring the fact that the group of women they saved are going to be murdered because the Champions couldn't mind their own business; the people back in the US couldn't see that happen because they made sure that they weren't seen as to prevent and international incident.

Then they come back to the US and we are told how beloved they are when we haven't seen anything that could justify the fucking love they get from the public. All I fucking want to know is what they did to make people love then more than all the hundreds of Superhero teams running around the Marvel Universe. The Avengers have saved the Earth countless times, but there is no love for them like the Champions, as far as the the story concern, biggest accomplishment is that they fucking saved some prostitutes.

Marvel always fucking does this, every time they want to make a character popular, they always fucking have the characters in the book tell us how great and amazing the main character/s are. They did it was Captain Marvel, just out of the blue she's the greatest hero ever, they did it with America, they open the book tell us how great she is and now it's fucking Champions.

I mean, even ignoring half her subplot from her original series, the fact that she has to figure this out for herself raises, like, 20 different questions. Her brain waves are basically a combination of Vision and the Scarlet Witch, right? Did this come directly from one of her parents, and she didn't know about it? Did Vision put a bit of the brain waves on random to ensure different personalities between her and her brother, and that happened to work out as gay for her? Did any part of her rearing come into this? I know that usually we just go 'it's an AI, deal with it', but we're talking about an AI who doesn't know her own programming well enough to determine her sexuality without sucking face on a green muscleman. Wouldn't she, of all people, try to analyze that shit beforehand, especially since her mom went crazy because of brain problems? And Vision practically handmade her, so did he know that she was gay, and if so, why didn't he tell her in the first place? Or at least find some way to scan her code so she doesn't end up in a relationship she can't handle and pull a Scarlet Witch on everybody's asses? Or was this a side effect of having to be rebuilt from scratch after getting zapped by the Grim Reaper? None of this is addressed. This is a throwaway line in a throwaway plot in a throwaway book.

Also, for fuck's sake Marvel, this is the exact same fucking thing you did with Chavez. Try out one guy (in this case, not even a standard example of the species -- no offense to any Cho-Hulk fans but he's not exactly every teenage girl's wet dream) and then declare you're off the stuff for all time. Compare this book with the current Teen Titans over at DC.

They are both, theoretically, for the same audience, diverse teens that like super-heroes and want characters that reflect "them". When we analyse this book's marketting and press, we see this desire to represent a younger generation is at the core of the book, maybe it's the biggest objective, over even having an actual plot.

But then you compare what the Titans are doing with what the Champions are doing and it's crazy. The Champions have so far fought Gentrification, The Dakota Pipeline and Islamphobia, all stuff that while an older audience around their 20s might care about, actual teens (13-18) sure as fuck don't.

Then over at Teen Titan, their first storyline is them fighting these fucking Naruto rejeacts from the League of Shadows then a fucking Sharkman. Teens thinks anime and sharkman are cool, they don't think the fucking Dakota Pipeline or whatever other talking point of the day is cool. That's why Champions feels so fake.

Everything other than the Freelancers thing was a single issue plot point that never gets brought up or even touched upon ever again. They help with some human trafficking one issue, then the next issue they're going camping. The ISIS thing was a single issue, as was the issue where they're fighting Atlanteans for no apparent reason. Then they're bumming around the most inclusive
middle-American small-town imaginable in an issue that just stops with no actual ending or resolution whatsoever, only to be paint-balling (FELLOW KIDS) in the issue immediately following.

This shit isn't as broken, disjointed or jarring as America is, which manages to be all of the above in a single issue, but as a whole it's just a mess. As bad as it is now, I really can't imagine how much worse it would be trying to read this in trade.

With both characters, it's disruptive to the entirety of their canon. If anything, the Viv situation is even worse than Drake's. I ain't an X-Men fan, but I know that the entire history of Iceman's love life covers a few X-Men arcs, and there's enough material that you can cherry-pick evidence that'll support him being gay. I know, this sort of sexual identity weirdness is something that kids are going through every day. I get that. But the whole point of modern ideas about sexuality is that they're a spectrum.
