I have this idea for a story.

Short version is it's essentially Spongebob told from the perspective of Squidward.

Long version is it's a typical cartoon city "world" where there is a central comedic figure that everything revolves around. From their perspective everything is fun and games but everyone else is really terrified of them and being caught up in their antics all the time. This goes especially for the "straight man" character that is part of what would normally be the central cast (think like a Sandy.)

A secondary character arrives (the main character) and has a dramatic effect on the world by being immune to the comedic character's antics via a magical anti-shenanigans umbrella that they carry.

I'm not great at doing comedy but how I imagine it is the story starts with the typical silly cartoon comedy to highlight the antagonist's antics. It's supposed to be funny for the same reason most cartoons are funny (situations with irrelevant consequences). But the tone is supposed to shift over time as the perspective shifts from them to everyone else to the "hero."

Ex. A cartoon characters gets hit with a hammer and turned into a coin it's funny + they are fine in the next scene

It's less funny if they emote real fear before-hand

It's even less funny if being smashed into a coin kills them (morbid humor notwithstanding)

I'm not sure if I want to take it THAT far or if hostpitalization is enough. Something to show that they are not actually fine. And this would go for a lot of classic gags like running into walls or getting pied.

There's a lot of other stuff like mixing classic cartoon designs with modern designs but this is already a long post.

Still working through the designs of the main two characters. I've mostly settled on the head the main guy and the fact that he only has one ear. Not sure where to go with the body though. And the girl is coming around.

Then I just got to try to populate the general cast.

Trying to come u p with designs for cartoon characters is surprisingly difficult. It's not hard for me to do human(oid) characters. I think it's because I feel like source pool is staggering. I was thinking of finding a random word generator and making up characters based on whatever it spits out.

The city has no theme (like Bikini Bottom where it's all sea life) so the population could be anything...

Thread Question.

Is there a type of music you listen to when you draw/write?

Is there any specific song you listen to that gave you a specific idea? If so, what was it?

I think you're definitely at that good enough to start stage. Unless you were planning on this being 100% publish and print ready from the start, your current level and style is very appealing. you would only get better at the other aspects of webcomic making as well as your art from here on out. "Way of the gun " guy here! Said I was gonna do a batman fan comic , it's going to be called batman: zero sum. dude in here inspired me, shouts out to him. Here's a preview page ,Just Started today, never liked doing city scapes but after watching some bat man stuff I noticed they all mostly start with a view of Gotham why not do the same. I'm going to try my best to finish this short within 2 weeks. Should get faster when I get to the human figures as I have a more enjoyable time drawing people doing stuff. "Way of the gun" is going through some exciting stuff right now don't want to say much but I have been working on it just want to get a good number of pages done before I dump them.

How do you feel about using gimmicks to offset subpar art in a webcomic?

I'm interested in getting into webcomics as sort of a solo side project/creative outlet to work on when I'm not doing other stuff with my friends, but generally they do most of the heavy lifting in the art department when we collaborate. I'm not much of an artist and won't make any allusions to the contrary, but I was thinking that I could potentially offset that by shaking up the standard format a bit by applying some of the skills I picked up at my dayjob. (eLearning developer)

My plan being to create a sort of browser based interactive webcomic/visual novel hybrid. Created in the same software I use to make online courses/exams, uploaded in long monthly chapters as opposed to daily/weekly strips. Each being complete with sound effects, music, limited animation, "mini games", etc. all integrated seamlessly to mix things up and keep it interesting.

My biggest inspiration being Shu Takumi games like Ghost Trick and Phoenix Wright.

Good idea, or a waste of time?

I rarely visit these threads so I apologize in advance if this topic or something similar has been discussed to death already, but I'm just looking for advice before going all in and running with it.

If you're good enough with composition that it's readable, you'll be fine.

One of my favorite webcomics looks like it was drawn by a 9 year old in MS Paint, but it has decent enough writing to make it pass.
>>

>>92056528
But this looks good and I can't wait to see more, sorry didn't mean to come off like that , keep it up!
>>
>>92055784
Honestly, you won't know until you try. Either it will work or it won't.

One thing I will say is that the readerbase doesn't care so much if the art is "subpar" as long as the comic is readable and gets the point across. (And is entertaining to them.)

I would say go for it.

It's a shapeshifting monster trying to woo the blonde woman because there's a prophecy promising something good to the person she falls in love with, so every time he fails he feigns his own death and tries again as someone he thinks would be slightly more attractive to her.

>>92057485
Hitmen for Destiny. It's long as shit and the art is consistently bad, but it's a fun read. Lots of entertaining monster biology and overly complicated drama puzzles, and I ended up enjoying the characters even though the dialogue isn't that well written.
>>
>>92056295

I won't go into too much detail as the concept is still evolving, but...

It's a tongue-in-cheek science fiction story about an alien engineer. He is the one of the only crewman working on a monolithic, state of the art, mostly automated space station. His duties basically boil down to being a glorified janitor, cleaning up after travelers who pass by and fixing anything that the robots aboard the station can't. He's pretty upbeat and enthusiastic about his crappy job though, and all of the new people and cultures that he gets exposed to living on what is basically a giant floating rest stop. Him performing his various futuristic mundane tasks forms the basis for many of the minigames in the first chapter.

One of his few living companions is an human girl who works at one of the station's fast food joints. She's basically a more emo version Trillian, but with some added quirks to make her feel a bit more fresh. Earth was accidentally destroyed several years prior to the events in the comic, turning humans into an endangered and nomadic species. While life in space is exciting and humanity has had a many years heal, it's still a sore spot and she occasionally gets pretty down in the dumps about it. This leads into a chain of events where our main character decides that they (as well as a robot and another alien character) should go on a little spur of the moment intergalactic road trip to cheer her up.

Their journey and friendship is the focal point of overarching story I want to tell, with each additional update being a short tale focused on them interacting with the new planets/aliens that they encounter as they travel the universe in search of their destination. Eventually, when all of that is said and done and they return to the space station, I want to slowly expand it with new plots centered on the various side characters established in that first story. Nothing concrete planned on that front yet though, just a few early ideas.

On Patreon, should I charge patrons monthly or per creation? I update every sunday at noon.

Names are hard. Names for the whole series, names for countries, names for the world, but mostly names for characters. I always feel like names should mean something but not that they should be recognizable. What do
>>
Is it a good idea to self-publish a webcomic as an ebook?
>>
>>92059309
Places are easy. Just give everything a similar suffix.

For example, here are cities of one country in my setting

>>
>>92059421
why?
>>
>>92059368
>>92059277
okay and should i publish the pages once a week (like i do now) or can i just upload them as soon as each one is finished? i draw 1~2 pages a day.
>>
>>92059274
thicc
>>
>>92059444
Well if you draw pages that quickly you might as well make them a reward for your patrons. You could do something like

$1 reward: read next week's page early
$5 reward: read the comic buffer

If pages are that quick for you, you might want to up your update rate a little bit. Updating twice a week might help draw in/retain readers better.
>>
>>92059312
It's one more avenue for getting your work out, and can be done for low or minimal cost. Comixology Submit is a relatively easy way to publish and distribute a PDF of your comic; I've used it for mine as well as web and print versions.

The way I see it, it breaks down like this:
Web - lo-res (standard definition), free, needs an active internet connection.
PDF/digital file - hi-res, low cost, can be downloaded to mobile devices and read without internet.
Print - hi-res as it was intended to be seen, standard cost, doesn't need batteries, and can be personalised with signatures and sketches.

The Print and PDF versions can be practically identical, and you can include sketches, fan art, director's commentary and other extras that either aren't available on the free web version or are otherwise scattered across the internet.

You'll still have to do all your own marketing/advertising/shilling etc.
>>
>>92059432
not him but they sound pretty lame desu. Borg Borg Borg, it's like naming all your towns Watertown, Allentown, etc etc
>>
>>92059945
That's how most cities in places like Europe and Asia were named though.
>>
>>92059969
Doesn't make it sound any better? Just my opinion but even generic fantasy towns from a random generator sound better than that

>muh historical accuracy
>>
>>92052824
This might just be brilliant. You've kind of hit on the major issue with it though: in order for them to be reasonably bothered long-term and not just get used to it, there has to be some kind of real consequence to the careless actions of the main character, but also a reason the grump can't do anything about it.. it has to have real conflict but at the same time not be so hopeless that the reader gets depressed and burns out on caring
>>92053088
I like these characters. They're a lot better looking than most real cartoons though
>>
are the google ads on webcomic pages profitable?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Place_name_origins

Cities and towns are often named after local geographic features, which is why there are a lot of similar place endings, like -ton, -town, -wich, -berg, etc.

>>92060128
Giving literally every place the same suffix would be boring, but a few recurring suffixes would add verisimilitude (eg -burg for large cities, -ton for small towns and villages).
>>
>>92060307
Yeah I'm all for that. I like the variety of suffixes with meanings/relevance with a healthy mix of random named as well.

That's just a side plot. The premise is that there are secret prophecies that are generally guaranteed to happen, but can be affected by outside interference. A butterfly-effect nudge in the wrong direction won't ruin a prophecy, but killing a prominent figure in the prophecy will probably do it. So there's an organization (Hitmen for Destiny) that receives payments from people who would benefit from the prophecies to ensure they happen - mostly by killing interlocutors and keeping tabs on the people involved.

So obviously the first thing that happens is a pair of the agents fuck up and kill a major figure in one of the blonde girl (Anette)'s prophecies. The rest of the series is them trying to cover up their mistake and keep all of her resultantly affected prophecies running smoothly.

As I mentioned before, the strengths of the series are a baffling level of detail in its xenobiology and complex situations of peril and personal drama with the feel of puzzles, but the characters are written with a surprising amount of nuance. The art style was kept to this childishly simple level because, between the complex monster designs and panel timing, if the author attempted to collaborate on it with an artist who had any skill it'd still be in production. Unfortunately, this also keeps people from bothering with it. I push it whenever I can because the passion that went into it really shows and it deserves better.
>>
>>92064456
crazy, man. almost as if crummy art leaves the creative part of your brain free
>>
>>92064491
I don't know about that, but it certainly frees up the time. It's also a matter of action over concept - if you put all your effort into improving your art through fundamental practice and won't make comics until you're satisfied with how your characters look or your grasp on perspective, you probably aren't practicing the most important aspects of the craft. It's better to have a shitty looking comic that people can read and invest in and critique and that you can expand upon or revisit with a renewed level of skill than to have a pile of decent looking sketches and a premise that no one will bother looking through because those are boring.

obviously getting monthly payments means stability for some people, the ability to confidently focus on work, but.. for me, doing it as a hobby, essentially trying to e-beg, i'd rather people feel free to just hand me some pocket change at random

>>92064456

No they're only charged when you post a paid post.

Also Patreon is live and kicking. Once people love you and your art, they do incredible things. Many artist are making a living (some thousand dollars per month) and some even reach six figure.
>>

>>92070907
Please go to Patreon and have a look. There's a set pledge amount, with corresponding rewards. If you opt for per creation then your patrons are charged their pledge amount when you post a creation. And it is recommended that you only opt for per creation only if you post less than 4 paid posts per month. Otherwise you'll go monthly charging. So patrons expect they'll be charged "their pledge amount*4" maximum. Also they can cap the maximum amount they can be charged. If they set it to $1 they are charged 1 dollar per month max even if you post 1000 paid posts.

Alright, so I started planning another comic and I think I'm gonna share my plans with you guys

It's a morbid high school romantic comedy about a self proclaimed doctor and a reanimated cadaver. Dr. Goodlove, as she calls herself, insists that she's an expert in the ways of romance, and convinces a boy named Rudolf to let her help him win over his crush. However, when she's prepared the perfect moment for a romantic confession, Rudolf is hit by a semi truck. Refusing to let the love die then and there, Goodlove steals Rudolf's corpse from the hospital morgue, stitches him back together and revives him from death. While Rudolf is grateful, he doesn't think being a walking corpse will help him win over a girl's heart, but that won't stop him from trying.

I'm trying to make my stories have better hooks and more succinct plots, since I feel that has been a major problem with my current comic. Thoughts?
>>
>>92076005

LINES LINES LINES

Still haven't quite figured out what I'm doing with line weights. I'll stumble on a technique that makes it click eventually...
>>
>>92066583
I'm not good at writing myself but I hope this can help you. Determine what kind of personality traits your characters have; are they shy, passive aggressive, fearful, depressed etc... Someone who's shy and withdrawn speaks different than someone who's easily irritated.
Also, don't let your characters explain what's happening or what has happened. You don't want them to be characters who's only purpose is to explain the reader what is going on in your comic (because that is what the story, flow and artwork does). Conversations are there to guide the reader through the story, so try to figure out which role each of your characters have, and based on their personality you write what you think they'd say.
>>
>>92077122
thick in the middle, thin at the tips. It helps if you do each each line with a slight s-shape motion

Trying to decide on a hairstyle for the swamp woman. Any suggestions?
>>
>>92077361
first two are a bit too 'gorgeous' and would need to be exaggerated into further tentacles.. kinda like the last one, but that one's a little too busy and a little too scraggly (you'll hate drawing it over and over)
3rd is.. kind of too gathered into two separate clumps instead of hanging limply. surely this woman's hair should be limp as fuck, like a bunch of wet overcooked green beans
>>
>>92077416
Yeah, I liked the idea of her having tentacle-esque hair with curlers in them, like the last one, but I'd want to tighten it up a bit until it worked better.

So I should try for something in between the first two and the last one?
>>
>>92077361
I think #4's hairstyle without the curlers hanging in it would work best for a swamp lady. It kinda looks like seaweed which works for a lady who lives on a body of water (even though seaweed doesn't grow in swamps last time I checked)
>>
>>92077361
I like the third one, but I agree wit h>>92077416 , it looks a bit too clumpy. Maybe play with separating the locks of hair some more in that design?
>>
>>92077361
Four is interesting, but I think it's a bit much. The third one is easily the best
>>
>>92077444
i think that's your best bet, yeah
maybe make the hairs thin enough that you can do them entirely in lineart, a mass of thin wiry black hairs. i dunno if that'd be easier
>>
>>92077207

Well that's true for a standard line, but I mean when looking at an entire piece or per "complete" character or object, there's more to it than just that.

Like a bold outline around the character in some places or the interior lines overall being thinner than the outline. Or how overlapping lines are bolder to make a part of the character stand out.

There's just a lot to process and I feel like there's some unknown general rule set that would make it simpler to think about.

Sorry about the halfassness of the 2nd panel but if I went back to it I would have dirtied the paper, would have made it look nice and busy but whateves you get what I'm going for hopefully.

Nice, dramatic looking compositions so far, though the lack of detail is a bit of a hindrance. You gonna ink this or color it? If not, I think adding some windows would make these buildings look a lot more finished.

Great job on the creepy faces, especially the one panel of the magicians. The lettering needs work, though, to be more readable.

>>
until I get my comic to fund itself, how can I get the money to pay the artist? I don't have a car so real jobs aren't really possible right now
>>
>>92084543
You shouldn't rely on a webcomic for income, especially if you have to invest in the art first. If you get enough money you should spend it on transportation so you can get a reliable job.
>>
>>92051954
I guess one of the biggest questions I could ask is;

What draws you into a comic? Or what makes it a popular comic?
>>
>>92084917
Good characters/dialogue (including humor), then art quality, then an engaging plot, then a cool setting. It's in that specific order and only the first one is 100% required.
>>
>>92083230
I can't, actually.
>>
I'd like to eventually become a proffesional comic book artist and writer, but is that possible to do with webcomics? I'm 29 almost becoming 30 this year. I've never done a full university course on art or writing, i've done some self studying, but my art is deviantart tier and people always tell me I need to work more on my skills whenever I show them stuff, my family and friends say I shouldn't let that get to me, but I wonder If its maybe too late for me. How do people get published anyway? Do they do webcomics? Or do they try and get things liek shortstories or comics pitches done first?
>>
>>92082748
they're not real. if you start depicting something just because a lot of people do it, that opens up a huge door.. because a lot of people (a lot more than gay for example) do a LOT of things.
>>
>>92085909
What? They're not real?
>>
>>92085931

but there's really nothing to gain by continuing this conversation. that ship sailed, went around the world, came back loaded with gold and spices.
>>
>>92085961
What?
>>
>>92085758

I'd like to eventually become a proffesional comic book artist and writer, but is that possible to do with webcomics?

It is very difficult. The art world is a very competitive field and even with webcomics you're not likely to be hired by big name companies.

>I'm 29 almost becoming 30 this year. I've never done a full university course on art or writing, i've done some self studying

If you're looking to be hired, every employer prefers if you have gone to a school and have a good background and understanding of the fundamentals of art. Even in the world of programing it's very easy to tell the difference between someone who was self taught and someone who went to school and has a background in it. Trust me when I say that not understanding the fundamentals of art has hurt me extrodinarily as self taught artists (myself especially) run the risk of falling into habits that are hard to correct making it difficult to improve leading to you having to unlearn everything you know in order to move foreword.

>I need to work more on my skills whenever I show them stuff, my family and friends say I shouldn't let that get to me

It shouldn't but you should always realize that nobody can reach perfection and that

1) There will always be people better than you
2) You can always improve your art
3) Art skill and style constantly evolves

>>92084917

>>
>>92085758
Start making comics. Short ones. Finish them. The best way to learn how to make comics is by making comics. But be sure to finish what you start.
>>
>>92086064
i thought all they cared about was your portfolio
>>
>>92084999
Phew, thank god I got that first one.
>>
>>92086064
From my understanding, comic publishers/other art studios really don't care about whether or not you got an art degree, they mainly care about your portfolio. Going to art school is by no means necessary to learn the fundamentals, there are plenty of self taught artists in the industry. Art school is most helpful because it helps you make connections in the industry.
>>
>>92086222
Man, don't make posts this cringe worthy.
>>
>>92086239
I feel like self-deprecation is appropriate in that situation. Cringey would be claiming he had all four.
>>
>>92086358
self-depreciation requires self reflection.
>>
>>92086358
That would only be self-deprecating if his comic had more than one of those qualities.
>>
>>92086475
hardly. just reading the room, realizing you're not too high on the totem pole, and riffing on it.
>>92086695

>>
Have you known any cases where an artist put a comic on hiatus, took a lot of time off for rest and practice, and then "relaunched" the comic with a new story line, better art, and met with success?
>>
>>92086866
It's hard to say, because when that happens, you pretty much forget about the hiatus. I THINK so.
>>
>>92085758
It's mostly about connections. Knowing who you have to talk to, and knowing people who know people who work at said publisher. Publishers receive a lot of portfolios daily, but they mostly won't look at those and if they do they might not even pick one. It also depends on what kind of publisher you're approaching, because they have their way of selecting artists, and your work has to suit them.
The publisher I'll be working with has set the bar pretty high (art and story wise), and mostly works with French or French-Belgian comic artists. It's difficult to get in, and the only reason I'll be drawing for them is because of the connections I have.
>>
>>92087208
sadly this is pretty much true
cant blame someone for being picky though if they work with french and belges, they're great

I'm kind of getting the hang of a character's design.

I'm thinking of some big revenge plot against mosquitos. 'Cause mosquitos are dicks.
They could be like horrible vampire like beasts that sneak in your window at night and eat your soul.

Other plot points could be a High Priestess dealing with some issues reguarding religious ceremony, a simple (but thicc) bee farmer lost and alone in a far away land, and a giant beetle gladiator desperately trying to find a home for her eggs

(Also, yes, I know the blood is red.
You don't have to tell me that.)

mosquitos really, really are dicks. there was an awesome Mighty Max episode based around vampires where every bit of vampire lore turned out to be wrong one by one, until it turned out vampires aren't batpeople but flypeople, and their garlic is citronella

that said, a spider having a problem with mosquitos being vampires is a little hypocritical. only half their race does it, and only to feed their eggs. spiders do it nonstop

This pic shows off main characters Atlas Haskell, Lon Chaney, El Jefe and the Anubis Pantheon, as well as some of the first opponents Atlas will face in the ring, Crassus, Doyle and Dempsea. there you go, see that's funny because it's unexpected
you just take the situation (like missing rent) then look at the real life consequence (landlord probably lets it slide for a month but then increasing legal pressure eventually resulting in eviction) and change it around so it's unexpectedly different. that's how you funny! like what if the landlord gets confused and starts giving THEM money

How do you find inspiration for creating unique-looking characters like these? I've been trying to work on a character portfolio for a scifi series, but everything I churn out is very 'safe' and generic. I can't into making appealing 'gross' characters, or creatures that stretch beyond the familiar. Every alien I churn out turns into "Lizard Guy!" or "Bug Girl!". Hardly ever anything with an identity of their own.
>>
>>92097514
>I can't into making appealing 'gross' characters, or creatures that stretch beyond the familiar.
obviously when you started drawing, you felt a lot of pressure not to make anything mockable, so you compensated by putting style ahead of freedom and flexibility
i did it too. i dunno how you cure it but try drawing with your other hand

Addition: I hadn't been keeping tabs on his work, but he's been writing a different comic which is almost identical in appearance, structure, and tone, but I think it has stronger characters. It's called Trixie Slaughteraxe for President. Again, dialogue is kind of awkward and the art is nigh-identical in quality, but it's a fun read and much shorter right now because it's ongoing.

Did another background stylization experiment. I think this might be a solid way to simplify extremely complex environments without taking too long to draw or losing readability.

This one specifically would scroll down in an animated segment to show the full environment and stop at the bottom for the panel. This is one of those "Quest" webcomics so I need to use modular characters, props, and environments.

Does anyone here has tips on writing a character with a southern accent, without it being obnoxious, annoying and difficult too read?
>>
>>92103603
Look into actual words/phrases used in southern vernacular (beyond the obvious "y'all" and "ain't"), avoid too many phonetic spellings. Hanging around actual southern people helps a lot, watching Paula Deen might be a decent substitute
>>
>>92103603
Also, check out the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, those might make for decent jumping off points.
>>
>>92103603
Sometimes nonverbal body language and visual cues can help with things like that.

I promise that if the first panel they're in, they're wearing something vaguely cowboy-y or leaning on something with a piece of straw in their mouth or something, and they say "y'all" or "pardner" or even something like "l'il" or "reckon", no one will have any problems reading their lines in an accent. You just gotta drive it home once and then they can be saying the most sciencey shit on the next page and we'll still read it with the accent.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into it! I have been doing some research on the accents and watched a few video's explaining certain words and accents. In the fist page my character uses words like "their'n" and "hafta". I hope it's enough because I don't want it to become annoying to read.

Bad art, or artwork that's just unappealing in some way. However that's more of a personal taste thing. Other than that; comics that have more text than illustrations, like instead of conversations the characters are only there to explain stuff and the pages are filled with text.

I'm a bit late to the party but whatever.
Pic related is a vampire design I'm working on at the moment.
I want it to be as vile as possible. In my comic a group of adventures are tasked with exterminating this thing but it ends up in a slaughter. The only surviver goes on to become one of the main characters.

This thing hunts at night and devours as much prey as possible (wild animals, cattle, humans) then burrows underground for daytime. It can also turn mammals or generally animals with a complex nervous system into drones by injecting a cocktail of pheromones and nerve poisons which gives total controls but also kills the victims within days.
>>
>>92108525
>boring paneling

Jesus christ this. Simplistic paneling is fine as long as it's done competently like in, say, dragon ball. But that's very rare and a bit out of date.
Actually, paneling is a glaring problem even among many published artists. I can see why amateurs and aspiring artists find it so difficult...
>>
>>92108501

>>
>>92108550
It looks like a tooth, doing non-tooth things. Which makes me uncomfortable.
I like it
>>
>>92108550
My art is crap so I think I should clarify:
The wings are attached to the centre of the body and spread outwards like a human ribcage during autopsy.
The fine bones extend in segments fron skin flaps at the wing stumps like they're growing directly out of the flesh. The skin areas inbetween the bones are newly generated each time the wings are spread.
Feeding and injecting poison is both done with the extremities, the area in the center of the body where a mouh should be is actually a cloaka, breahting is done through fine memebranes on the scalp.
>>
>>92108661
Yeah, I've noticed a lot of popular webcomics lately with terribly uninteresting paneling. Panel composition is tough for me too, and I can sit through some bland panels if the writing's good, but there are times where the panels just make my eyes glaze over and send me to sleep.
>>
>>92108693
Thnaks. I guess the tooth resemblance is mostly due to the three legs. They are actually supposed to be more slender and look like thin fingers with some extra segments.
The central leg retracts during transformation and with fully spread wings the "tooth-look" will be mostly gone (I hope).
>>
>>92108823
Sounds grotesque, I like it, but your art is definitely restricting your ideas. You should look more into anatomy, and I mean like medical anatomy, some extra realism could make this guy's biology a lot more clear from his character design.

Muted colors and no colors both work, unless you're really careful with your color palettes and composition colored extras often add distracting visual noise and clutter. For that top panel there, you could probably go either darker or lighter with the coloring on the extras, because right now their values are too similar to that of the background, so they blend in and don't quickly read as a crowd. The main two characters stand out better because they're the most saturated things in the panel, but you should also keep values in mind to make your focal points clearer.

blank works great for emotional or very character-centred scenes like lovers reuniting or departing, a character during depression or in chrisis etc.

It's distracting during regular scenes, the bottom panel looks unfinished.
Go with the advices for background and coloring posted before, they're all sound.

In this specific interest, I love how the white people look. The other one blends in too much.
For most people, I'd say use muted colors. Sometimes just one color with a few splashes here and there, as if just faces and hands poke out of a uniform sea of clothing
>>92110389
a hyperreal amount of detail combined with just slightly wrong proportions and especially angling. eyes that are slightly diagonal, mouth corners that point the wrong way, prominent nostrils with a receding nosetip or vice versa. eyebrows that are a bit too close together but aren't shaped like a natural unibrow. anatomical details you hate but prominently show anyway, like the jowl lines or that little mound that appears under the lower lip sometimes. and especially weird brow shapes. a brow that's super heavy, extending unnaturally far from the sockets (or eyes that are too deep set or not deep enough), a completely sloping brow with no hint of a proper forebraincase, a brow that connects directly with the nosebridge...
also look at some deformities caused by genetic aberrations like trisomy. the differences are so subtle but they set off your eye right away. things like the palm crease in down syndrome sufferers.

I'm having trouble understanding the geometry of the hat, too. it seems to have a lip on the top and the bottom (seemingly the same lip), but nothing in between them. there's a split above her head leading to empty air. or is that just a cartoon thing like cap'n crunch's floating eyebrows

It's meant to be a big lillypad that works as a sort of bowl/hat that has stuff inside of it, but I'm still kinda working with it. Idea I had for this was it's flat in the middle, with a big rim to keep things in it.

Especially if contrasted with a simpler design for the other characters. Like having a Movie grade CGI character in a TV standard CGI show.

Maybe not too flat; have it would dome a little in the middle, which we can just be able to see through that split in the rim.

really anything but never very loud as it breaks concentration. I also listen to video game soundtracks as they're mostly instrumental
>Is there any specific song you listen to that gave you a specific idea? If so, what was it?
Well, one day I told myself "draw out your feelings" and so I drew pic when listening to David Bowie's "Blackstar" (i know the anatomy and posing is weird but eh)
>>
>>92113407
okay so, unlike a real lilypad which is shaped like
I_____I
this thing is shaped like
I--------I is that right? and it's resting on her head, so the middle flatness is bowed up
that basically makes sense, but i think you should still be able to see that behind that slit in the front, and if there is a middle-membrane like that it should be visible since the slit goes all the way down

if it is meant to be just dish-shaped, not H, then the only problem is drawing the lower rim so it looks connected, not concave

Since my comic has everything from religious tales of lovecratian angels to 60's themed aliens to tribal mutants in jungles, to a hyper neon futuristic 80's Moon-beam city eseque settings I typically listen to music that fits the theme of what I'm writing for the script.

Mostly I listen to movie soundtracks, classics or at least pop songs from the time period, and spacial ambience to get me in the mindset.

Anything that doesn't match the theme is

Draw things. Draw people, draw your environment, look at things and draw them. Don't try to draw cartoon characters and shit, the best way to get good early is to learn how to draw from real life until you understand how people and objects actually work, then you can start to adopt and shape an artstyle.

Just start drawing man, solve problems as you encounter them. There is no easy way to learn how to draw, you just start doing it.
Find art and photos, and try to imitate them, copy the pictures you see. Then start putting characters and objects at different at different angles and poses, always push yourself to do better. Or better yet, draw what you enjoy, and once you start to really like drawing for fun, crack down on your fundamentals.

I see, that's exactly the sort of thing I expected to see.
Your biggest problem right now is not that you lack the creativity, it's just that you aren't skilled enough to put it on paper. You remind me of myself a few years ago, where I was always worrying I couldn't think of interesting designs for medieval armor.
Of course, I needed to research more about how armor worked, but also as I got better at drawing in general, my designs got more solid. Pic related, me trying to come up with armor design for RPG characters in 2010 and my comic in 2015. I'm still not quite there yet, but you get the point.

Go back to the basics, refine your fundamentals, then apply the stuff you learn about form, figure, gesture and rendering on humans to your alien designs. When you are drawing, research a shit ton of reference, you can find stuff in nature more alien and cooler than anything you could think of, and in time you will learn to pull those details from imagination, and blend it with other images from your head to create more unique designs.

Yeah, I made a fat character when I was 12 and actively told myself the fatness should never be a fetish thing but then I learned about jerking off and they were too convenient for fantasies. Now I'm considering making it a comic that's both a fetish comic and the original plot, where magical weight gain has a big scene but becomes a point of dramatic tension and the characters have a serious discussion about fetish-centered sexuality and how to handle it a relationship and how anxieties play into that

>>
>>92124745
I made a thread about it.
I do constantly.
Though I want to be smart enough about it. Like not just make it the basis for a character or arc.
Also my fetishes are pretty tame. I mean nobody is really going to notice I'm injecting my fetish of muscular women when it makes perfect sense for the character to be a muscular woman.
>>
>>92125231
Probably. It'd be boring for the people who just want porn and it'd be off-putting for the people who just want a story, I just really like the idea of scene in the aftermath of a guy discovering his sorta-girlfriend has an extreme weight gain fetish because he generically wished that he could be her fantasy for the night, so the girl has to account for her preferences while he has to account for using what's clearly some sort of magic that he didn't tell her about
>>
>>92125163
>>92125489
That's all around awful. Do it. The bad webcomic wiki needs this entry.
>>
>>92125754
Nah, I'm busy. I'm also a decent writer/artist, so it wouldn't even be funny bad, it'd just be awkward for people without the fetish. At best it'd be a bait and switch where it's a semi-engaging fantasy that gets a small general audience and then makes a hairpin turn into fetish debauchery and then the rest of the comic has no sex at all but the story's kinda neat, I guess, not my strongest but whatever.

It'd be a waste of time for me because I'd be just writing for the 5 other people who like male weight gain.

>>92131241
Think what you like, dude. I'm self-aware enough not to do it, I just know my strengths. It'd be okay to look at and the rest of the story would be entertaining enough, but that one interlude would totally destroy the readerbase.

Replace the interlude with anything else that some girl might want that the guy wouldn't and the rest of the story would play out the same, like "I want to raise 5 children with you right out of college", but it's specifically fetish stuff because "I like you but your fetish bothers me and also seems to be the only way you're interested in sex" is a discussion that I don't think I've seen in anything - either a fetish is used in a sexual fantasy and the other person's conveniently into it or in a serious work it's used as either a joke or to cast the person with it as an untouchable pervert off the bat. A couple negotiating bizarre sexuality is something I'd like to see handled with a little nuance.

The end result would be that he loses interest in dating her because he's doesn't want to be overweight, he's had huge anxiety issues over it his whole life, it's not how he wants to live anymore and he doesn't want to worry about his own girlfriend not being attracted to him. And, of course, the wish granting power has a backlash.

Anyway, my series don't typically have anything sexual in them, so don't worry about it.

because most of us
>don't do this as a job,
>are hobbyist
>just do it to entertain ourselves.

Can the web comic community stop thinking the art is the only thing we focus on ether, the stories we tell are just as important to us as the art. A lot of us will spend just as much time drawing as we do writing, and coming up with ideas for our respective worlds.

Anyone who's trying enough to put in the best they can into their art and stories (for something that they most likely do as a fucking hobby) should be commended, not brought down by someone better than them, or some idiot over the internet.

It's the reason I love artists like >>92075012
because their art is definitely not as complex as some other artists here, but he seems to genuinely care about the project he's created.

If you are going to judge our projects purely on our art you are missing out on a huge chunk of the passion we put in.

now fuck off cunt.

So I'm spitballing a bunch of different, half-assed ideas from space cowboys to demon shaolin monks, but I can't really think of a solid world to throw any characters into.

Thinking it might be worth backing away from coming up with characters and instead build up a world, give it a history, laws of nature that explain why shit works the way it works, and then pull character's from whatever events or societies I come up with. Idea being that people are shaped by their environment, so it gives me a foundation to build characters as well as motivations for them to do whatever the fuck I can come up with.

Thoughts?
>>
>>92137603
i would say think of a setting you really like, think about what you like about it, and find something totally different that answers that same need
like i have a setting i'd love to mess with sometime, involving a bunch of humans having been put on a planet with seemingly impossible features everywhere that get right up close to violating physics. i have a bunch of ideas that are basically there for spectacle. obviously this came after playing xenoblade x. i particularly like the idea of 'no-one has ever seen either of the poles' like no matter how theyve tried, nobody's been able to travel that far. just simple phrases that express the feel.

of course i'm never going to use that setting..
>>
>>92137956
>and find something totally different that answers that same need
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by this. I do like the idea of coming up with various settings and pulling the most interesting pieces from each and then combine them in a way that makes sense.
>>
>>92138137
well what's a setting you like, and what is it you like about it that makes it so special?
>>
Is it a good idea to ask for feedback on your characters online before having something done?
I recall a script writing teacher telling me to hold it, especially if I intended to work with other people.
>>
>>92138551
I can't really think of anything someone could critique of a character without having seen their design or an example of their personality, really
>>
File: landscape.jpg (375KB, 2560x1440px) Image search: [Google]
landscape.jpg
375KB, 2560x1440px
>>92138302
Shit I dunno man.

I like the idea that there are certain pieces of the landscape, just huge swaths of land, are uninhabitable by traditional kingdoms or societies because they land itself is constantly flowing like water. Not literally a constant mudslide but mountains form over the course of a week, mile wide rivers turn into lakes overnight and vice versa, vast deserts give way to great plains, huge chunks of earth literally float away into the sky. With such volatile geography it would be impossible for traditional kingdoms to form because you can't actually build roads or buildings, borders shift constantly, and crops can't grow for fear the soil will be replaced with sand or water. Yet different factions still want to control these areas because the constant shifting of the earth reveals precious resources and ancient artifacts.

Add in nomadic tribes that do live there and you have conflict from within and out.

The cause of the shifting doesn't really matter and can change based on the story
>Residual magic/essence of some ancient earth elemental/titan that will simply always be a part of the land
>Incredibly active tectonic activity thats just a normal fact of life in the world.

This wouldn't be the only thing that makes the setting different than other stories but I like the potential storylines and worldbuilding that could come from it
>Lets go to war for the metric fuckload of gold that just popped out of the ground
>Some ancient civilization that tried to set up shop here was just unearthed and it had some crazy shit living in the ruins, how do we stop it?
>a massive eruption has occurred as a result of the constant tectonic activity, blocking out the sun, the fuck do we do now?

The reason I'm thinking of building the environment first is because you can pull characters that have had their personalities and motivations shaped by these environments .

Or at least thats the logic I'm following, could be a crock of shit for all I know.
>>
>>92138917
bingo! that's a really cool concept
so you've seen a ton of examples of it of course, think of a brand new thing that still satisfies that same "land doesnt work like normal land and would force things to work differently" feeling
i had an idea for what if a meteorite hit a relatively shallow part of ocean so hard that it sent up huge chunks of rock that hardened, making a bowl that was high-rimmed enough to keep the ocean out of it, and people lived in that

>high-rimmed ocean bowl
I like the concept, and I feel like I've seen something similar where people built a city inside of massive but now dormant volcano in the middle of the sea, I just can remember where from.

But with a meteor you can get a little more creative
>Meteor is composed of a precious material not found anywhere else, creating constant conflict for the people living in the crater
>Meteor was composed of some weird shit that alters the physiology of the people over time. Changes could be purely cosmetic in nature allowing new character designs or plot related by turning the inhabitants increasingly aggressive/intelligent/whatever over time.

The meteor that creates a crater the size you're describing would realistically be destroyed in the impact, but you could even take artistic license and put it at the center of the crater and have a bunch of weird cultists start worshiping it for whatever convoluted reason you want.
>>
>>92139681
That kind of sounds like Naoshi Komi's Island setting, except that it was an structure made by humans.
I still don't get why japanese publishers kept snubbing his good ideas.
>>
I can't suspend my own disbelief for the sake of writing the story. I'm trying to write my own origin myth about how the world came to be and what people are made of, but all I can think is, "Yeah, but then how do planets work? How do cells and reproduction work?" Not that that's even going to get touched on in the story, but I can't help but think of that sort of thing.
>>
>>92140153
>I've seen something similar where people built a city inside of massive but now dormant volcano in the middle of the sea, I just can remember where from.

>>92140863
i liked the idea that maybe it was first inhabited by amphibious people or at least it frequently got wet, so they had a lifestyle built around frequent wetness (kinda like people near indonesia and bangladesh are just used to monsoons). lots of people not bothering with clothes, that kind of thing.. then as it becomes more advanced, they build reinforcing panels in between the towering spires of upthrust rock, making it a more complete bowl. Then they build it ever higher, build elaborate scaffolding on it.. it gets referred to as the Kappa's Head or something. maybe there's some old mythology about it.
>>
>>92051954
Considering how poorly a lot of webcomics handle the topic; How do you write good romance? I have a few characters that I gradually want to put together and build the relationships gradually?

I guess to simply it what turns you off to a romantic subplot in a webcomic and what actually gets you invested?

Trying to write a comedy comic that is rather story focused, but like in a random yet consistent way. I don't really know, it is its own thing I guess.
Constructive critisism is welcome, I would really like to know what I do wrong/right.
>>
>>92141005
that's easy. First the concepts get made, then the realities, and then the cosmic infinite and infinitesimal extents of them are fleshed out afterwards, following the formula that's established.

So you're saying work backwards then? Write the story and worry about the how later?
>>
>>92142304
in this particular case, I say yes. any kind of creation myth makes sense if you just expand "and somewhere in the end of that process, things like 'making land' expanded into making all the atoms and subatomic particles of that land, it just wasn't in the story because it'd be boring and the god didnt want to confuse people. it's bad enough they went right out and started doing crazy shit he didnt expect them to be able to"
