Why can't people fly using the force?

We've seen what Yoda, Sidious and Vader can do with it to move massive objects, is it so hard to make themselves fly?

Yoda and Sideous are essentially the maximum of what's realistically possible. One has had about a millennium of doing this specifically and the other is part of a tradition to become as strong as possible that's existed for slightly longer than that. If they can't fly, nobody else can do it, even if it'd technically be possible, because it'd be so obvious a thing to learn that they'd do it constantly if they could.

Pretty sure that's a hover chair
This guy (>>92023066) has the right of it, if people at the absolute top of the game can't manage it no one can. The problem isn't propelling yourself with the Force, its keeping that up for an extended period of time. Eventually you will get tired of constantly lifting your own body weight with your mind, and then your 5 stories up and straight fucked
>>
>>92023165
>composting
*compositing
>>
>>92023202

Most jedi fighting styles operate on the assumption that you have two hands on your blade either at all times or most of the time. Form's 2 and 6 are the only exceptions and form 6 assumes you're using the other hand for force pushes or similar abilities, or else can adapt it to a second saber. Using a cumbersome shield, even a light one that's only cumbersome by comparison, would go against the tenants of form 6 and the motivations most of it's users have for taking it up.

Form 2 is a hyper specialized form that literally nobody in the entire galaxy except Dooku actually bothered with, primarily in the first place because Dooku was an autist and then later because it's exclusive use is fighting another guy with a lightsaber and it's useless for literally anything else. A shield MAY work then but Dooku would probably rather just have that hand free to shoot lightning and he's literally it as far as practitioners are concerned, except maybe the inquisitors for like five seconds each before they flail around uselessly.
>>

>Why are there no rainbow lightsabers?

Because Kyber crystals don't work that way. Once attuned, they stay that color unless corrupted by the Dark Side, in which case they turn red.

>how come jedi don't use those personal energy shields like gungans and mandalorians?
Because they can deflect blast bolts with their Lightsabers. Those kinds of shields would only be most useful against another Lightsaber user. Which, up until the Clone War, the Jedi hadn't faced since the fall of the old Sith Empire.

Thus the Jedi relying on Lightsaber forms other than form II. Because 99% of the time, Jedi almost never clash blades with someone.

>This is one of the things I hate the most about nu-canon.

Why? It's no more edgy than 'muh synthetic crystals'.
>>
>>92024880
Because it cheapens the dark side even more.
>>
>>92024880
There's nothing edgy about synthetic crystals tho
>>
>>92024891
>Because it cheapens the dark side even more.

I don't see how. If anything, it looks to me more like it strengthens how much the Dark Side is a regular part of the Force.

>>92024900
>There's nothing edgy about synthetic crystals tho
Exactly.
>>
Ahsoka more like not sexy
>>
>>92025022
In my mind, the danger of the dark side is how tapping into it or even the mentality needed to tap into it gradually warps the mind and drives a person to seek greater power and dominion over others, and in the process do great evil with the power the dark side offers. The danger is not that it will turn your eyes yellow or make your saber red.
>>
>>92025205
then you are lost
>>
>>92025022
It goes against the "insidious" nature of the Dark Side. When not being used for extravagant displays of power like shooting lightning bolts from your fingertips, the Dark Side should be tempting and seductive and appear to be benign, all the better to seduce people to evil; and external physical signs of corruption that scream I AM EVIL go against that.

Then I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

I personally like that Kyber crystals show some manner of reaction to the Dark Side. Of all inanimate matter, they're the most connected to the Force out of anything. They should show some kind of symbolic representation. And I think it's more fitting than synthetic crystals because they're taking something valued by the Jedi and twisting it for their own purposes. It's a nice little autistic 'fuck you' in my opinion. Which is the kind of shit the Dark Side would make appealing to someone.

That makes no sense though.

TFA was an ANH rehash, which makes it pretty easy to remember.

Maz's Castle scene is 'Member Mos Eisely, for example.

And then Rogue One was actually a pretty solid movie with plenty of memorable moments that stood out.

Such as the Death Star blasting Jedha, Galen's death, just about every second of the second act.

Reading Guardians of the Whills. It's comfy and spiritual.

Chirrut cannot use the Force. He's trained all his life to achieve the "enlightenment" of simply feeling it; and while he certainly can, it's only very tenuous, fleeting and momentary - but every time is just as, if not more signigicant than the last. To simply feel the Force, truly being one with it, if only for a few seconds, is at base, indescribable wholeness. With every touch, Chirrut's senses expand and sharpen.
>>
>>92028617
Is this a new book or something?

It's mostly from his perspective, taking place during the Imperial occupation of Jeddha prior to Rogue One. It's very comfy. Between chapters are excerpts from a collection of poems and prayers about the Force, compiled by a Disciple of the Whills.

>>92030768
Yeah, they insist it's evidence of anti-EU bias despite Hasbro having been okay with an EU character winning the last two polls.

What's funnier is that there are people bitching about it being rigged because the Tonnika Sisters didn't make it to the final round, even though Hasbro has said in no uncertain terms that they can never make the Tonnikas due to legal issues behind them. People legitimately wasted votes on a pair of characters that Hasbro literally can't make and they're upset that Hasbro won't do it because an internet poll told them to.

They haven't officially specified because Hasbro won't discuss the issue beyond "we can't do it" but apparently one of the actresses never signed a release form giving Lucasfilm the right to use her likeness as the character for promotional/merchandising purposes. Even though the other actress did, the theory is that if they made a figure of either Tonnika, the actress who didn't sign (or rather her estate since she's dead now) could still sue because the two characters are so similar looking.

>Thrawn is back in Chiss space when Return of the Jedi happens. I'm assuming this happens in Rebels.
>Thrawn and Eli are butting heads over whether they should support the Empire or New Republic. Eli is loyal to the Empire ironically because Palpatine led him to becoming such good friends with Thrawn and the opportunities he had in his life. Thrawn however knows about the contingency and fears that the Empire will soon get uncomfortably close to Chiss space and support the evil that the Chiss had wanted to rid themselves of the whole time.
>The Chiss are split between being loyal to Thrawn because Eli isnt seen as one of their own or supporting Eli because they feel Thrawn abandoned them when he left to join the Empire.
>Meanwhile after a failed coup Sloane has an Imperial Guard who worshippedexecuted for treason. A sentinel droid is activated in fears that Sloane will abandon the spiritual goals the Empire had according to Palpatine and it takes control of the Acolytes of the Beyond. The Acolytes believe the droid be Palpatine's very being due to the holocron AI in it's programming and begin staging another coup with the purpose of instilling this droid as the new Supreme Leader.

>>
>>92032195
>Meanwhile Thrawn uses this chaos in the First Order to attack them and get them away from his territory. He sends a ship towards the known galaxy to alert the New Republic but in a desperate attempt Sloane destroys it. While she's distracted with stopping Thrawn the Acolytes assassinate her but to their surprise the droid deactivates once it's mission is complete. In their despair to find a leader they all hear the voice of an ancient being telling them to abandon the Sith ways and come bask in the presence of the pure dark side. The presence promises them that they will have their revenge on the Jedi and New Republic but first they must seek him out to regain their strength to prepare for their revenge. They all sense the power of this being and set the First Order on a pathway away from Chiss space and towards this being. Thrawn decides not to tell the New Republic because he doesn't want them going on a warpath through Chiss space when the First Order isn't even a threat to him anymore.

Eli's misgivings and disgust is nothing new for Imperial characters in the new canon. He might not be a true believer, but I suspect his apparent defection to the Chiss as more to do with Thrawn's urging rather than any ideological clash with the Empire

If there are lightsaber blasters now.

How come no lightsaber flamethrowers rocket launchers, sniper rifles or anything else? Or even better, lightsaber mini deathstars since both use crystals

How come there are no wide lightsabers? Wouldn't that make more sense to have really wide lightsabers to better deflect things? or like having two or three lightsaber blades right next to each other to form a broad sword

if lightsabers can be spun to form a helicopter, why isn't this technology used on personal operating jet packs?

why have we never seen a more powerful version of a lightsaber? One that is bigger, stronger, more damaging?

Are there any star wars retrospective/fan shows you guys enjoy?

This podcast is the only star wars discussion I can tolerate. They are ACTUALLY funny and stay on a genuine topic the whole time. All other shows are either super cringy with comedy, or one of the hosts has a distractingly autistic voice. Not to mention the constant OT circle jerking with most shows.

Only problem with these guys is how shitty their opinions are. Almost completely negative opinions on TCW and their taste in SW novels is ass-backwards

They think Life Debt is good enough to redeem Wendig after Aftermath.

They didn't like Lords of the Sith for the most part, or Lost Stars, but they loved Tarkin. It's just all weird and backwards. As if they put names in a hat to decide opinions on things.

Like I said, I still think they are the best of the bunch. As weird as their opinions are, they are able to argue their points and speak very genuinely so it's not as difficult to listen to as you would think. Anyone interested really should check them out

To be fair, Thanoth's beef was less about the moral issues in the Empire and more about him feeling Palpatine was going to get complacent and grow incompetent and allow too many people to play politics. He wanted Vader in charge because he felt the Empire needed a strong authoritarian iron man rather than frail old politician.

Obvious he fell for Sheev's public persona.

His content is kinda boring though, but granted that's just because I follow Canon extensively so I already know everything he makes videos on.

That being said, his newest video on the latest Aphra arc, comparing with the Legends version, was really well made and interesting.

Actual effort put into it which is rare on Youtube.

One of the things that bugged me about the "random character gets a story" habit was that the Decipher CCG from the late 90's seemed to give every other cantina alien a connection to either the Empire or the Rebellion.

It makes sense from a gameplay standpoint (as it then made these characters available to one of the two factions in the game) but the fact that they stuck meant that now half the cantina had secret rebel agents.

Thus is funnier in hindsight when TFA's answer to the cantina literally has spies from each faction in it.

The phrase "entitled to your opinion" just means you're free to think what you want. The phrase doesn't imply anyone has to agree with them or treat their opinions as valid.

Also, finished Guardians of the Whills. Definitely not quite what I expected, but comfy all the same. A small, personal adventure involving Chirrut and Baze caring for a dying and expanding orphanage in Jedha city. Jedha was already struggling under Imperial occupation, but per usual, Saw Gererra ends up making things worse. Chirrut and Baze end up allying with them for a short time to aqcuire relief supplies when the orphanage is subject to a raid by Imperial forces. Before the Partisans arrived there were smaller local insurgent movements. After the Partisans gained their foothold, the local movements were absorbed into the Partisans, and with Saw Gerrerra's extreme tactics, start putting the lives of innocents in danger, even going as far as to use Chirrut and Baze's plan to get thirty four orphaned children off Jedha in a stolen Sentinel shuttle as an opportunity to sink the Star Destroyer holding over the holy city. This fails of course, as Chirrut makes them realize that they'd be sacrificing the lives of children to strike a blow against the Empire. After this, they cut ties with Saw - though given they'd already taught them the layout of Jedha city, it's doubtful how much a difference Chirrut and Baze eould have made had they committed.

Why have a knockoff like Ahsoka do that when they could literally have Anakin's ghost do it instead?
>>
>>92043301
It wouldn't really matter to Leia. I'm sure she's since heard stories about Anakin or even looked them up herself, but it doesn't change the fact that her only experiences with him were horrible and traumatic. Ahsoka going to her and saying "hey he was really a cool guy I swear" wouldn't really do much, just as Luke's "there really was good in him" didn't do much.

The issue wasn't so much that she didn't believe Luke- she did, and she accepted that at the very end he had turned back to the light and sacrificed himself for his son, but that doesn't change the fact that she never saw the good side of him firsthand and has only painful memories of him.
>>
>>92043203

She's going to go grey due to having millennia of Sith material around her to read.

>Going to hold my hands up here - I think I just misheard some of the Austin stuff when I was talking on Skype, so I may have misspoke there. There’s also the element that I had no notes in front of me and just sort of rambled on from memory. I did not expect these few select statements to blow up (oops). I’m used to having the opportunity to just release follow-up notices on the Patreon with any updates and corrections. My bad there.

>Let me clarify that I don’t think KOTOR’s a current project. From the same people I learned about Dylan from, I did hear that they prototyped a KOTOR revival at Austin a while back. I believe it may have evolved into something else since then or fizzled out since then. I’m still confident Austin is doing something Star Wars related though and I’m confident in that. I actually did know that they were contributing towards Dylan since I originally found out about it when I was researching Austin’s Shadow Realms, so if I said exclusively, then that was admittedly a mistake.

Jyn was to become an orphan herself, or at least already was in her mind. As far as they were concerned, she'd become the most important orphan they'd come to deal with.

Come to think of it, a lot of Star Wars protags are orphans.
>>
>>92043735
There is a book called "Kenobi" from Legends that covered his time there. Actually a pretty good book.

Basically, he meets spends time at some trade depot and helps the female owner resolve a problem with her corrupt trade partner and a few tusken raider attacks.

Actually kind of interesting because he doesnt want himself to be known
>>

>Anakin was right about sand

>>92026079
Everyone so far has given a different answer, but I'm fairly certain you're thinking of Catalyst.

Krennic infiltrates a Separatist lab by going along with a smuggler (Has Obitt) who makes routine deliveries there, and uses the delivery crates to kidnap and smuggle out a pair of scientists for use in a prisoner swap to free Galen, Lyra, and Jyn. Shit hits the fan when a guard notices a body part sticking out of one of the crates, while toxins come into play in that they're used to knock out the scientists alongside the planet having a methane atmosphere, which requires the infiltration team to wear masks.
>>
>>92043439

There's a difference between trying to rationalize yourself and having someone else talk about your good points. If Anakin talked about himself it'd always come off as an excuse for his actions. If a third party like Ahsoka did it it'd really underline the idea that Anakin actually meant something to people and there was something in him that was twisted to what he became.

>>92043493

It's not about him being a cool guy, it's about having to actually understand what happened and see what he was. I think there was an EU story that used Kitster from TPM to fill that same role as a friend of Anakins who knew him as an idealistic kid.

There's a difference between being told that there's vague good that was corrupted, as Canon Leia was, and understanding that once upon a time the man in the black armor was once a scared kid who grew up trying to do the right thing. TFA's spiel on Kylo Ren and "there's too much vader in him" shows a fundamental misunderstanding of who Darth Vader is as a character and underlines the point, in that Leia doesn't understand what ACTUALLY happened and was never made to.

There was a whole book about it. Even at the end, Leia does come to understand what went wrong with Anakin Skywalker, but it still doesn't change her feelings about him. The end result was basically "wow, he was a sweet boy and life really hit him hard... he was still a capital bastard though"

I think that you misunderstand. Leia's opinion doesn't need to do a total 180. But there at least needs to be a moment where that's confronted.

First of all, that's downplaying it a lot.
Luke reestablishes the Jedi Order on Coruscant for fuck's sake.

Second of all, it did it more tastefully.
TFA has poisoned the well.

Also the EU treated the big 3 much better. Leia didn't die, Han didn't die, and Luke wasn't (as much) of a failure.
Plus Chewie's death actually made Han interesting.
>>
>>92044514
I agree, hence why I said Qui-Gon.

I figured at the end, Anakin was able to finally over come his struggle with anger, hence why he becomes a force ghost, but ya Qui Gon has the "doesnt play by the rules" attitude that would fit Anakin.

The idea of a hard canon Revan is retarded to begin with. I'm saying this as someone who's face was exactly the one they picked and as someone who played the game almost exactly as the official run did. The whole point of Revan is to essentially be a cipher for the player. YOU are Revan. You know Revan is cool because you made a cool guy. The twist works because you didn't expect that you created all of the enemies you were thus forced to fight against. That's why Revan's appearances in the KOTOR comics are all shrouded and ambiguous, and why in KOTOR 2 lets you pick Revans gender and ultimate fate.

Worst. It's a bad copy of the E-11 with none of it's virtues. It has iron sights that would never in a million years work properly.

I'm super dissapointed because if you wanted a slick NuTrooper design at least go with a Bullpup variant if you're going to have a fixed stock. There'd be arguments on how good Bullpups are but at least they look different and are used in real life.

lul
this
JJ drank the RLM Kool Aid so hard he forgot that even ANH had a politics scene that established basic facts (the regional governors...).
>>

I fucking loved them as well. They were a great foil to the Jedi and a galaxy so used to fighting wars one way. The Yuuzhan Vong are dark, bizarre, totally alien, and evil without being Sith or Imoerials. The descriptions of their organic technology and pain obsessed religious fanaticism were utterly fascinating to me. Maybe it's because they're basically space Aztecs going around mass sacrificing people which is a culture I've always been very interested in.
>>
>>92046504
>I maintain that the Vong are great.
They're not. The basic idea of them is great, but the Vong themselves are shit.

>Very Lucasian, not in tone, but in spirit- they were new and different.
They were new and different in a terrible, shitty way.

The basic idea of an extra-galactic species invading is not bad and is, as you put it, "Lucasian". But the execution of that idea was shit. I think Filoni would've been able to make the Vong into something great if the Vong episode(s) ever went past early concept stages in TCW.

>TFA is warmed over shit we've seen before.
Kind of, but not really at the same time because the New Republic still exists, it's just had a big blow struck to it.

>>92046593
>would've been nice if that was actually in the movie.
I completely agree that they should've explained more in the movie. Jar Jar Abrams and his retarded mystery box storytelling in TFA was terrible. THe books shouldn't have had to be the first to tell us how the First Order formed, and certainly not 2 years after the film came out.
>>
>>92046657
Nah, the Vong were a nice change of pace.

>>92046654
I agree.
>>
>>92046657

If you want the basic idea of the Vong literally just read Marvel Star Wars circa the late 80's. They're literally a beat for beat retread of the Nagai just executed a whole lot worse. They even dragged up Lumiya from that arc even though nobody remembered or cared about her before that point.
>>
>>92046576
It just hurts to see a premise with great promise only dabble around and hint at that very great promise before abandoning it all prematurely, or driving off a cliff in a completely different direction
a lot like most comic books these days. some good ideas that hint at great development that get canned right away because a new movie came out and comic universe has to be the same as the movie universe
>>
>>92046706
>just executed a whole lot worse.
wew lad

James Luceno (who wrote 3 books including the finale and was one of the braintrust for the NJO)>Mary Jo Duffy or whoever the fuck

I actually like the Marvel comics from back in the day but they're pretty... simple.
>>
>>92046680
>Nah, the Vong were a nice change of pace.
They really weren't. They easily could've been if they had been executed better. As it stands they and the entire NJO and beyond are one of the biggest stains on Legends.

>>92046706
I'll track them down and check them out then. Thanks for the suggestion.
>>
>>92046747
Please don't spoil since i'm only on the second book, but in general what about the NJO was bad to you/about what book did it go wrong for you?

I guess that's kind of hard to answer spoiler free, but still.
>>
>>92046793
If you're a different guy please also answer this
>>92046817
>>
>>92046817
dammit it was hard enough to dodge spoilers up until now.
shit where did I put the books, if I find them I'll post again
>>
>>92046657
>The basic idea of them is great, but the Vong themselves are shit.
Yeah, boiled down to their essential premise of "extra-galactic threat that can't be defeated by conventional/familiar means" is a solid concept, but "death-worshipping cenobite skeletons who aren't affected by the Force" is just terrible.
>>
>>92046851
>but "death-worshipping cenobite skeletons who aren't affected by the Force" is just terrible.
Why?
>>
>>92046851
What a garbage opinion. That makes them awesome and interesting.
>>
>>92046772
>I actually like the Marvel comics from back in the day but they're pretty... simple.

Simple doesn't mean BAD anon. The Nagai-Tof war and Lumya vs Luke is simple, but it gets the point across. Luke has to develop a new fighting style instead of coasting on what he learned in the OT, and actually face up to training someone new. Leia tries to reason with the invaders. The people who were new under the new government were only just running into an enemy that getting cute didn't work with. Han was actually forced to address his feelings for Leia in a more direct way with Fenn cutting in to troll him over it. Things HAPPENED.

You don't need a six page essay on how cool pain is or to have some EU planet blown up to actually work it out.

Say what you want about old Marvel, but they actually put the work in to continuing the story as the primary medium at the time and didn't need to run the whole thing past a committee. Their designs weren't always great but it feels legitimate.
>>
>>92046954
>You don't need a six page essay on how cool pain is
Why do I feel like this is one of those things where /co/ has a kneejerk hate of "edge"?
>>
>>92046902
Not him, but making them immune/absent from the Force felt like a cheap and nonsensical way of giving them an advantage.
>>
>>92046981

Because it was terrible, especially the intro book. The prose is awkward and the entire thing is masked in ridiculous made up nouns that are difficult to follow but somehow every character can say perfectly and literally nobody makes up a nickname for.
>>
>>92046994
More like a good way to switch things up.
>>
>>92046994

It really does. The force by it's very nature is meant to touch everything, up to and including inorganic matter like training remotes and proton torpedoes. There's never any real explanation except for "it just works".
>>
>>92047016
>especially the intro book.
You're nuts. Vector Prime is great.
>>
>>92046981
It's just blind knee-jerk hate of the EU. There's nothing needlessly edgy about the Vong. Their self inflicted pain sacrifice based religion is very cool and paints an incredibly vivid and clear picture of how alien and different they are in contrast to the very clean and straight forward Jedi, Republic, and even the Empire and Sith. When even dark side leaning characters are scared and confused by them, you know they're something to fear. It's fantastic storytelling and a fun addition to the universe.
>>
>>92047037
I don't understand why you would get hung up on something like that though.
If it forces the Jedi to adapt, then it's interesting.

What happened to letting a story do things?

Where?
>>
>>92047082
Self-inflicted pain sacrifice based religion. If you can't see why that's needlessly edgy I don't know what to tell you.
>>
>>92047072
That's not "edge" you pedantic child, that's a necessary descriptive contrast to illustrate stakes and how different they are. Stop parroting bullshit.
>>
>>92047068

A story that can't keep internal consistency is worthless. If you set up a rule and break it, it means any rule can be broken and there's no point in getting invested.

aHEM
>>
>>92047097
There is absolutely nothing edgy about that. There are real life cultures around the world and throughout history who practiced such things. The Vong are blatantly inspired by the Mayans and Aztecs. Stop posting about things you have no understanding of.
>>
>>92047097
>I don't know what to tell you.
Well you better think of something because you're not making a very convincing case.

I meant for the Vong. If nothing else TPM was building on established rules.

Not even the guy you're arguing with but you have no idea what you're talking about
>>
>>92047097
Considering its a thing that ran whole cultures in mesoamerican, you're not making a very good case for how its too edgy.
if anything their descriptions are pretty tame. Get back to me when they start running a rope thru their fucking ballsack and burning the blood soaked rope to appease the gods.
>>
>>92047120
Then how am I still invested in the NJO?
>>
>>92047168

If they learned to work iron instead of learning to be edgy maybe they wouldn't have died out.
>>
>>92047200
/co/ had made the word "edgy" ready for retirement.

Neither of them are extinct, their descendants still exist. The Mayan culture still exists as well, mostly in Guatemala but parts of Mexico as well. Stop posting. You're completely wrong and have no idea what you're talking about.
