Why do Laika films never make much money?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Do they just not grasp kids that well like a pixar film?
>>
>>92021226
Because people have shit taste
more news at 11

In another story, while Kubo had fantastic animation, the story was utterly lacking.
Really brought down the experience for me.
>>
>>92021226
Not as much advertising.
Not that big brand recognition.
Probably something to do with release dates if I were to analyze it and see what films were released around it at that time.

I think they do really well on Netflix, though. Once they're released, they often end up on my "Popular right now" list for a little bit.
>>
>>92021226
I would say a lack of talking animals voiced by celebrities...but Kubo kinda fucks that up.

Sadly the look of Laika's stuff is sadly more appealing to older audiences, and probably doesn't look that good to kids, why see a movie with puppets and mute color pallete with carefully oriented movements when you could see a big eyed bright vibrantly fast moving CG cartoon character being zany.
>>
>>92021226
why did you exclude boxtrolls faggot?
>>
>>92021226
No profit motive because it's owned by a billionaire who founded Nike. If it was subject to the realities of the free market and forced to adapt to consumer tastes they would probably make more money (or go bankrupt).
>>
>>92021399
Because it's shit. Actually so is Kubo
>>
>>92021226
for kids:
Coraline was too scary and depressing

Paranorman was too complicated

Kubo was too boring
>>
>>92021226
How was Paranorman anyway?
>>
>>92021484
It was okay
>>
>>92021484
Alright so you know how Gravity Falls was shit? Imagine that it wasn't, involved a lot of women with fat asses, and the incest thing was instead between a boy and his eternally twelve year old ghost great great ancestor whatever.

guys

every now and then, maybe once every couple months, I'll have a nightmare about the Other Mother hunting me down and trying to eat me, I'm in my 20s, what the fuck is wrong with me
>>
>>92021537
You just want Other Mither porn don't you?
>>
>>92021483
what was depressing about Coraline?
I remember the ending to be quite happy.

Honestly though I remember nothing about it.
>>
>>92021537
Why are women so much scarier than men when it comes to horror?
>>
>>92021537
You found her sexually attractive until she turned into that, and now your mind is fighting itself on what to think, and unfortunately, every couple of hours your dick takes all the blood from your brain reducing your computing power, leaving the internal conflict eternally unresolved, until you find a new woman who's hot but then turns into a freakish ghoul to haunt your dreams.

I suggest the bathtub chick from the shining, by today's standards she's not that hot, so it might taper off your psychosomatic psychosexual dilemma

I am not a doctor.
>>
>>92021356
>Sadly the look of Laika's stuff is sadly more appealing to older audiences, and probably doesn't look that good to kids, why see a movie with puppets and mute color pallete with carefully oriented movements when you could see a big eyed bright vibrantly fast moving CG cartoon character being zany.
remember Kubo was competing against Sausage Party at the box office and lost
>>
>>92021590
Since society frames women as being passive caretakers, it's easier to subvert our expectations with when they take a more active, harmful riole.
>>
I wanna see them do a Del Toro movie

imagine something like this done by Laika

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oFxksTDJnQ
>>
>>92021226
I really didn't think much of coralline. it felt like a huge chunk of the movie was missing and was never explained. I guess the book does that?
>>
>>92021590
Cause the men are usually silent stalkers who either chase you at a slow pace, or kill you in 3 seconds.

Where as a woman is usually depicted as just plane batshit insane
>>
>>92021667
Sausage Party was more accessable.

Simple A to B plot, Seth Rogen taking the helm as writer, hype surrounding an R rated animated film being massively marketed.....
>>
>>92021226
Because their marketing department is complete and utter shit.
>>
>>92021580
not the ending, just the whole tone of the movie. There was very little dialogue on the whole, and that creepy gibberish soundtrack, I don't know. I liked the movie, but it just feels dark
>>
>>92021580
>what was depressing about Coraline?
everything?
The real world was just "Here is a childhood life without internet and friends, moving to a place with only old people. The weather sucks too" and the other world was just plain weird during night time. The creepy other mother with the people and their freaky button eyes don't help much.
>>
>>92021748
>>92021765
Time to watch Coraline again it seems
>>
It's simple.

Kids don't like stop motion. They think it looks weird or creepy.
>>
Lack of mass appeal. Most of their films are aimed at people who like off kilter stuff, and few of those people are kids.

Combine that with a stigma against animated films, and you have LAIKA's problem.
>>
>>92021611
>I am not a doctor

then fucking explain how you could be so right
>>
>>92021226
is kubo good? I put off watching it because it's 3D.
>>
>>92021796
I watched House, even the shitty seasons.
>>
>>92021226
They don't give a shit what kids want.
>>
>>92021226
Too many dead kids
>>
>>92021788
It's a good movie, really good actually, but the dark tone is pretty overwhelming. I can see why children don't exactly remember it fondly
>>
>>92021884
Yeah. I was a teen when I saw it, but I can see why kids would dislike the film.
>>
Obviously because they fucking suck.
>>
>>92021226

Who's decided what movies the kids see? Ultimately the parents.

The parents see a movie and it's not "LOLRANDUMB with Hit Song by Pitbull and TWERKING" enough and they dismiss it. Like >>92021356 said.
>>
>>92021580
it had some deep hidden fucked up messages, there are lots of theories about it,

>Coraline symbolically depicts the process of programming of a mind control slave at the hands of a manipulative handler (if you have no idea what I’m talking about, read the article Origins and Techniques of Monarch Mind Control).

>Monarch programming is a mind-control technique comprising elements of Satanic Ritual Abuse (SRA) and Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD).

>Monarch Programming is a method of mind control used by numerous organizations for covert purposes. It is a continuation of project MK-ULTRA, a mind-control program developed by the CIA, and tested on the military and civilians... While mass media ignores this issue, over 2 million Americans have gone through the horrors of this program.

That's enough tin foil hat for me for one night.
>>
>>92022015
was it autism?
>>
>>92021226

Coraline actually did really well to start off and was getting quite a bit of repeat business but lost a ton of its 3D screens to a Jonas Brothers movie a few weeks in, which cut its box office in half.
>>
>>92021226
Put aside that they're ugly and disturbing. What kills them is they're just not fun.

They don't need to be bright colors and manic action with a happy ending. They just need to be compelling stories told well. The stories are nifty, but the storytelling is meh. The day after a kid sees one of these in the theater, they are not excitedly telling their friends that they HAVE to see this it was so AWESOME.

Unless you have a superstar on the marquee, word of mouth is what sells tickets.

Also, taking kids to a movie, especially one in 3D, costs a fuckton of money. Why bother if the kids aren't even going to enjoy it.
>>
>>92021812
>>92022642
Can't you just, not watch the 3D?

It seems like it's better not to anyway.
>>
Laika makes Kino, movies for the filmmakers themselves, they don't bother with executives or test screenings, they can afford that thanks to Nike.

I don't know if that's good or bad thing, why do you want them to be more popular?

I don't know what's the problem with that specific website, I remembered I saw a similar article before & I randomly picked one of the many sites that had it, it's not that crazy of a theory, the same symbolism is used on Alice madness returns, her therapist brainwashes her and transforms her into a doll
>>
>>92021742

>Sausage Party was more accessable.

Sausage Party was also a pile of shit.
>>
>>92021884
It could have been a much better movie, but it dropped too many balls. Stuff that seemed like it ought to be important went nowhere, like the dowsing. Important stuff that should have been earned, like much of the ending, came out of nowhere. Mystery is great storytelling. Befuddlement is not.

The creepy factor is a good thing. Kids eat that up. Even a good scare is good fun. But not if it's distressing. Or if too much is too hard to comprehend. Or too over-the-top to take seriously.
>>
>>92021226
Extreme lack of marketing.

I remember being super excited for Kubo and then I completely missed the release date for it by like a week because I had heard 0 things about it, and the fact nothing about it showed up on any of my social media feeds means no one else knew about it either.
>>
>>92021226
They're released during dump months
Not much advertising
So called "fans" won't show up

They're not that good
>>
>>92022692
>not watch the 3D

so just don't watch it?

>somehow surprised that every movie barely makes any money
>>
Probably because Universal dumps them into Focus Features, the arthouse label for Universal
>>
>>92021226
They don't capitalize with toys and merchendise
>>
>>92021525
Also, no Mabel
>>
>>92021226
Laika will keep making them, regardless, but financial success would be a form of vindication of what they've been doing all this time.

I mean, the guy is rich as hell, he'll keep making these, but I just want one to be a hit in the box office, y'know?
>>
>>92021262
This. I feel bad for saying so because the visuals were so beautiful but it was straight up boring at times
>>
>>92023010
They can produce a movie and release it under both Universal and Focus Features at the same time.

They did this with Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker.

And speaking of Fifty Shades of Grey, why the hell did Universal choose to release a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray box set of Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker instead of Kubo and the Two Strings?

Kubo would benefit more from 4K HDR than any of the Fifty Shades movies would.

I just wish the Laika films would have 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases soon.
>>
Laika do make art cool story something new ..little dark .. you can watch even you are over 40
>>
>>92021812
It's easily the best of Laika's works. Ignore the faggots in this thread calling it boring, they're being contrary since this board praised it for months on end.
>>
>>92021226
They are eery as fuck, tend to be dark, scary and are somewhat depressing to most kids, if you haven't realized
>>
>>92021580
You don't remember how they wanted to take the girls eyes and sew buttons to her face with a huge needle?
>>
>>92021226
They're not just animated movies. They're pieces of art, and art doesn't sell good to masses. They prefer forgettable, market-grown products.
>>
>>92024835

In other words KINO. The best movies are the ones where you find a middle ground, let director do his vision and make some money along the way.Pixar was good at this until 2010.
>>
>>92021884
My brother got to see it in theaters and apparently he didn't really like it since it scared the shite out of him
>>
>>92023326
Not hard to do. Hire a decent story fixer (well that's what it should be called) before going into production. Some of us are actually good at it. And then promote it so people actually hear and talk about it before release. Not crazy expensive, and not rocket science either.
>>
>>92025590
Shit, you're right. It's been seven years since they knocked one out of the park. What happened?
>>
>>92021226
They're not even trying to make money.
>>
>>92021462
>because it's shit
He said Boxtrolls, noy your waifu.

Because they're not half-assed CGI movies that try too hard to be "sassy".

Please don't consider CartoonBrew's being paid to whore out the movie to the point where they got an actual scoop and chance to publish a real story rather than the clickbait Amid is known for and rejected it as "hype".
>>
>>92022724
That site thinks that Coraline is part of a government conspiracy about the CIA using "mind-control technique comprising elements of Satanic Ritual Abuse (SRA) and Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD)."

Putting aside that the CIA has not brainwashed "over 2 million Americans" and that that conjecture is fucking crazy and unfounded- Satanic Ritual Abuse is a myth/urban legend that got out of control as a sensation that caused mass hysteria, and Multiple Personality Disorder (now no longer a thing, it's been renamed as Dissociative Identity Disorder) is an extremely rare little understood controversial mental condition that many in the psychiatric community debate probably doesn't really exist.

Coraline does have plenty of symbolism surrounding magic, folklore, manipulation and abuse, but I don't know if you could have picked a crazier article to try to express that.
