It's not surprising to me. It's become a popular ship and Jeph is all about catering to demand. It seems at first and for a long time now, Jeph has been building Faye and Bubbles's relationship as friends. But then shippers of course wanted to see them fuck, and I think that probably applies to shippers on the forums and social media that Jeph checks as well as here though of course there's overlap between the people here and on those forums and shit and Jeph very likely comes here himself too. So, Jeph sees people want something and if he doesn't have any other ideas he just throws it in, or in some cases teases it out for years before finally coming around to a conclusion.

Everyone wanted to know what Claire has in her pants, but there's a divide about exactly what it should be. Whether he made her pre or post op, he would be pissing somebody off, probably a very vocal somebody who would decide they'd feel very strongly about it and bitch to no end. And he probably wouldn't be able to take it back either. So rather than face a potential shitstorm, he opted for a weak "compromise" by making both sides disappointed, but at least leaving neither one infuriated. This way Claire could have anything your imagination can conceive down there, so you don't have a right to complain, effectively.

Jeph hates both pissing people off and committing to shit. That's one reason why he doesn't make a backlog- because whenever he does something wrong, he can just immediately fix it in the next strip. That's why after the stabbening, he immediately switched focus away from Marigold and totally dropped the story he'd been in the middle of building with her there.

So with Faybles, it's just a relationship. He can just break them up if people decide they don't like it. And very few people seem to be at all opposed to it, while most seem actively want it. It's a safe decision.

I don't think so, because she's supposed to be built for war- so she has a war chassis. Her entire body should represent easily replaceable components, hard lines, edges, etc. As depicted above, with a super humanesque/ organic looking body under the combat armor, it's like bolting a few steel plates to a normal car and sending it to Afghanistan. Then, with the reference to GiTS with the Major and all, they are meant to blend in more with people and regular society- so it makes sense that they get high end organic looking units. Bubbles is the equivalent of either a Abrams or a Bradley/MRAP/Striker. She's not something that is supposed to blend in with a civilian environment- there is no point to her having blushable soft roboskin.
