Anyway, I see your point but having the state enforcing a religion upon its people is something that will most probably cause a pletora of problems and applying It to a nation as massive as modern America just seems impossible to not cause a major social and political problem.
Societies tend to change over time, religions always try to remain the same, this clashes with society and becomes a problem in the long term.

It's because we're mostly nominal that it is impossible. Even if you could somehow convince a nation based around the idea of freedom of religion to essentially abandon that concept (suicide that no sensible politician would be foolish enough to attempt in modern America) You'd still have to decide what denomination of Christianity gets to become the state backed religion which would probably lead to more protest and violence than Muslims ever will in this country.

Most of the highly religious people I know would not only turn there nose up at the idea of ending freedom of religion they'd probably see an attempt to form a state approved religion as nothing less than the work of the antichrist. Seriously this would not turn out well. Best case scenario would be 9/11 2: Holy Boogaloo worst case scenario would be all out civil war.

No, he divided the United States into different states. Which is how the country is already organized. It's also the only way that something like what you're proposing could possibly work in America: let each state determine its official religion, and over time people could migrate to the one that best fits their faith.

There are too many varieties of Protestantism to slap a single coat of "Christian" paint across the entire country. Big corporate media outlets may speak in those terms, but the reality on the ground is quite different. Even now churches still splinter to ideological differences. I can think of at least three different local churches just in my home town (Presbyterian, Methodist, and Episcopalian) that had upheavals in the past decade.
