Because of this, surgeries and hormones that mutilate and attempt to change their biology could have no real benefit. I'm really not seeing the problem with any of what you're saying. If, as you said, there's nothing inherently wrong with having gays in popular media, then why does it matter? The only reason it's so noticeable now is because we're in a transitional period of sorts. Depicting homosexuals and acknowledging their existence has no longer become taboo, and depending on how you look it, arguably even somewhat trendy, so they're showing up more often and more noticeable in more T.V. shows, movies, games, comics, etc.

As it becomes more normalized people will stop caring, creators will probably stop seeing inserting them as a bold or even significant move, and they'll become as natural as seeing straight or minority characters.
