Every single thread is made to mock it and shit on it. Most of the people reading it do it only out of long enforced habit.

But if you want to know the lucky trick that made it popular in the first place: it started being made at just the right time before webcomics were a thing and right as they started to become popular, and it updated regularly multiple times once per week. That's it. The only other thing it needed was to tease ships to keep people coming back to see if the characters had fucked, and it was a huge success. It literally didn't matter how shit it got beyond that as long as it met those few factors perfectly.

Nothing, really. It's just this assembly of characters, mostly young adult sjw hipsters, living in a version of modern day Massachusetts that happens to have sentient robots. There's no theme or plot to speak of, it just bounces around their interactions with eachother and sometimes brief story arcs that usually go nowhere. It doesn't even stick firmly to a genre- it can seem like a relationship drama or slice of life for a while but then it might switch to a supernatural scifi where the devil shows up to help the robot friend retrieve the lost memories of her war trauma that she sold to the illegal underground fighting ring boss, only that story somehow comes out incredibly boring. And then the next arc is about the tranny moving in with her boyfriend and how their relationship is perfect. I think it used to be mostly jokes about obscure indy bands a long time ago.

Aside from "this is me," that's the one other thing that gets constantly brought up and driven into the ground around here. The artist is a recovering alcoholic, and one time a sjw wrote a criticism that he didn't draw their favorite character fat enough in a bikini, and he got sad and stabbed his hand and a few days later changed the story direction away from the bikini and had a different character come out as trans to score tumblr brownie points.

Nah, it really doesn't feel like he's trying to shove his personal drama down our throats. Closest I can recall he's come is when he occasionally has the one character suffer from alcoholism and go to AA, but that was mostly one time, and it really felt more like he was just trying to draw from one of the few life experiences he's had, and not like he was using the comic to wrestle his own inner demons. And of course that entire problem was solved in like a day and a half in in-universe time ad wrapped up so neatly it never needs to be brought up again.

He never had a character get so angsty they stabbed their own hand (though weirdly there is one character with a robotic hand, but it seems to be a coincidence), we only know about the incident because he put up a news update post explaining why he couldn't draw a comic for a day or so. He has no backlog if anything comes up.

It's really a shit comic in general. Characters get introduced and disappear at random. Plot threads suddenly end because Jeph stops caring. Things just kind of develop conveniently in a way that doesn't actually put pressure on anyone beyond a few panels unless they're a designated bad guy.

"This is me" is the rule and not the exception. The whole of the comic is at that level of quality.

Jacques has also sent out a few amusing tweets in the past. He's one of those artists who takes criticism pretty badly, either by blocking the person giving criticism or by having a meltdown, or both, and recedes into the echo chamber of praise on his comic's forums. Also a generally pretty SJW kind of guy at times, and sometimes a bit of an ass.

It's one of those things that everyones been reading forever. It runs daily and is just the right level of bland to keep coming back to since its never actively offensive. It's the webcomic equivalent to something like Garfield.

It has some dips into outright unreadable garbage here or there, the infamous trans scene and the recent arc about the red robot girls' amnesia, but if anything those bring in new readers who want to see what the commotion is about.

This is it, essentially. Nobody thinks Garfield comics are that great but it's such a force of habit once you have the paper that you'll flip over anyway.

Even if you want to quit, that kind of raw muscle memory is actually kind of hard to break. It takes me months or years to actually drop something unless there's a singular giant incident. A lot of people are presumably in the same boat now, since this comic is like fifteen years old by this point. Even if you were only there for a relatively small amount of time habits can form.

Though anyone who's ACTUALLY followed the comic before it became a walking meme and a living argument against pozzing can recognize it's gotten visibly worse. Jeph used to be the poster boy for cool webcomic artists who actually try to improve, back before it became a venue for trained artists and the market got flooded. His quality level went down around the same time things got super progressive.

It's frustrating that Jeph refuses to improve and has actually gotten worse in a lot of ways after like 15 years of making this thing. Characters who defined the comic for years will vanish out of nowhere, the sense of humor has changed for the worse, he still has never made himself a backlog, he used to be an amateur artist that was gradually improving but turned complacent after a while. It's not just him being burnt out on the comic either, since every attempt he's made to spawn a new series has actually been notably worse in all those departments.

I read it out of habit, it only takes 5 seconds out of my daily routine, but that doesn't mean I can't voice criticism on the utter waste of potential he ended up being or its bad storylines. Jeph already surrounds himself with a forum of yes men who encourage his bad habits.

I'd probably agree /co/s obsession with keeping a 24/7 general of it is totally unnecessary, since it's hardly on the level of shitposting fuel that other comics like Dumbing of Age and Sinfest are, but these threads mostly exist because newer readers just want to see fetish edits of Marten fucking the tranny and Faye fucking the robot. There's also some people lingering around hoping he'll have another meltdown as big as stabbing his hand and are in it for the meta drama, which is awful but it's /co/ so what do you expect?
