That is actually an interesting idea, letting him use his most standard method of protection, attacking physically in order to stop the action, just to show it ultimately would prove futile to saving anyone in the long run. He'd get his moment of victory, but in the end it would all prove useless.

Of course the most likely reason is "Someone wanted to see Batman drop kick the fucking Specter" and realllllly stretched for a reason why, but overall there's an idea to it.
