yeah i mean at least when Jack rekts 100 of dudes, he had his sword for all those times. She just uses her HANDS

Have you watched the first 4 seasons, you retard?
>>
>>91981846
Yes, and this is still bad. The first fight Jack had with an entire army took two full half-hour episodes, not two minutes. And he used a sword. And he barely made it out alive.

Also, the first four seasons were primarily episodic and occasionally comedic. The only time he took out an army in a second was the robots in sneakers from the duel episode, and that was used as a gag.

Season 5 is continuous and intended for mature audiences, I expect more than "literal handwaving takes out an entire army in seconds".
>>
>>91981694
I disagree, it's fucking awesome
I got some CW Mace Windu vibes from this fight

t.bh Jack wasn't that powerful in the first season. By the fourth one, he could take out armies with ease. I am also sure that Jack was much older when he started his training, compared to Ashi. His training wasn't as intense either.

Actually, it was like 8 minutes of third episode.

The entire point was that Jack is so badass he instilled fear in drones specifically designed for slaughter and was playing them like a goddamn fiddle.

Also, sword isn't really known for being anything special except for being durable and being able to harm Aku.

>Season 5 is continuous and intended for mature audiences
Mature COMPARED to original Samurai Jack.

>people will defend this scene

Samurai jack dtopped on quality after episode 3
>>
>>91981694
It was because she never used strategy.

Remember when Jack was outnumbered in episiode 2/3? How he had to use the terrain to his advantage and use stealth and sudden and fast bouts to gain the advantage? Remember how he had to use a variety of arsenal to beat a freaking mook army in episode 1? He didn't just rely on one weapon, he mixed it up to make it work?

I'm not going to say this was mary sue or waifu wank or anything like that, I'm saying it's bad because it's freaking BORING. Seriously? She just pushes them? What, did the ones in the side bounce off the wall like rubber balls? She just grabs their spears and breaks it? Come on, give us some strategy. Show some character development by showing how she LEARNED from Jack during the bout in the snow and later inside the monster. Show her really thinking and pulling off cool moves, not wanna-be bullshit. We don't need to know if she's strong physically, we need to see her be a character.

Be cool damn it.

in samurai jack, power = strength

powerful characters can perform large feats of strenght. there is an episode where jack has to toss a large stone as far as he can to pass a test, but he can't throw it very far. then he throws an even larger, heavier man over his shoulder, sending him flying much further than the rock. the point is that strenght isn't how big your muscles are, it's how well trained and adept you are at combat (at least in samurai jack universe)

so it makes perfect sense ashi can steamroll an entire army, she is THAT strong.

You don't actually know what handwaving is.

Handwaving is when the authors go, "Ehhh a wizard did it, I dunno."

Ashi being able to defeat an entire army of mooks is, in no way, surprising, unexpected, or difficult to believe in-world. Ashi and Jack are epic-level player characters. Normies are nothing to them. This is not news. It is not handwaving when the writers show how powerful either of them are.

You still aren't getting it. Jack has done the exact same thing Ashi has, defeating an absolutely ridiculous number of enemies singlehandedly.

Jack has many, many episodes where he just "DBZs through" (your words) enemies because he's better than them. For some reason you don't like it when Ashi does the exact same thing.
>>

Jack has never defeated an entire army of thousands by grabbing one of them and running through the rest of them. When he went up against the army of beetle robots he had to actually use his sword and also got horribly beat up and spent a very long time destroying them.

I'm sorry that Ashi being an epic-level character like Jack bothers you so much. The fact is she was trained from childhood, like Jack, to be a warrior who can beat enormous odds in battle.

Jack can take on legions of enemies by himself. So can Ashi. If that makes you uncomfortable, you probably have some issues to work out.

I understand the purpose of it; to show the contrast between Ashi obliterating everything in rage fueled rampage and Jack's peaceful tea making.

I still think it was executed poorly, though. Feats of insane strength are more of a Scotsman thing, I think Ashi should have used a bit more strategy.

I agree, but that doesn't make the scene terrible. Jack has had countless interactions with opponents who never even touched him.

>Jack traveled the world learning from a variety of cultures. Ashi ran a single obstacle course repeatedly

The "Ashi only ran a single obstacle course" meme needs to stop. It's specious reasoning at best. If you think the cult who raises people from birth to fight Jack didn't think to switch up the obstacle course from time to time, I think you're actively trying to dislike the character.

>That's not beating enormous odds. There are zero odds a small girl without superpowers can kill an entire army of orcs by running at them barehanded.

You're retarded. You say "there are zero odds a small girl without superpowers...", but that's not what Ashi is. Ashi is an epic-level character, like Jack, who can handily face odds that few others can handle. She's not as good as Jack, but you could be 65% as good as Jack and still lay waste to an entire army the way she did. This isn't hard to understand.
>>
>>91984153
Yeah with the help of giant traps and explosives.
>>
>>91984183
Nothing that was described makes them "completely different".

Ashi ran through a bunch of mooks without getting hurt. Jack ran through a bunch of mooks and got hurt while doing it.

The "one took this many episodes but this one took only this many" argument is moot, because there are obvious time skips in both episodes to account for how long the battles last. Ashi's battle took hours, not minutes, as evidenced by the time of day changing as the scene went on.

>That isn't an actual description that means anything. What specifically are you talking about?

It's a term in tabletop RPGs for characters who have reached a level (in D&D 3.5, around level 10-12) such that they can handily and consistently dispatch normies without effort. Henchmen don't even appear on their radar. Ashi and Jack are epic-level characters in every sense of the word. They've trained extensively and gained a certain level of immunity when dealing with weaklings.

>Except she did what would take Jack multiple episodes, lots of strategy and careful execution of traps and allocation of his limited energy and resources, and 99% of his body's ability to continue being alive, by running through thousands of them barehanded in a couple seconds.

You don't know how Jack would've handled it in another episode. If the roles had been reversed (Jack needing to protect someone who is defenseless as an army approaches), he would have done exactly what Ashi did, and fought them head-on because there is no other option.

Ultimately you're just unhappy because Ashi and Jack handle fighting large volumes of enemies differently. It's very strange.

I found the army fight a little disappointing. No, it didn't ruin the ep, and it served the story well enough (though the animation was ehhh at times). But one of the best parts of SJ to me was that they tried to incorporate better fight choreography for a lot of the big sequences, even bringing in martial arts consultants to use real-world techniques where appropriate.

No, not every fight needs to be like that. But when I saw a pile of human-ish soldiers advancing on Ashi up a narrow path I was thinking 'fuck yeah perfect opportunity for some detailed choreography and asymmetric tactics'.

Didn't happen - they took the different but equally valid path of demonstrating Ashi's overwhelming will to protect Jack against any odds. They focused more on character than on action. That's ok, just not what I personally wanted.

Yeah, exactly. I've decided I don't like seeing a random anorexic lady ram through an entire legion of brutes in a cartoon where Jack was NEVER able to do this and where the entire focus is that skill is supposed to be used when brute force can't. If Ashi didn't exist in the show, it would be much more better and these threads would be absolute harmony. Ashi was the worse thing to happen to samurai jack.

Ashi's done all that shit before, and Jack has done more. This was just a realistic depiction of what that absurd level of strength would actually look like if you pitted someone that strong against a bunch of (relative) normies: the super strong person could literally just run through the normies. In that regard it was actually a good scene.

Women grow up believing they can be as competent and capable as men, be it in sports or combat, if they just train. That any gaps in brute strength can be overcome with agility or brains. That's what Western media has pushed for decades, but feminism has mutated into an easy idol to worship and garner cheap acclaim. Everything, even the news, endlessly encourages them to play at being men.

It's gotten actual people killed, and will only continue to devour more. Female soldiers and even officers aren't just an ungodly deep money pit, they're ineffective to the point of lethality. Yet there's no shortage of commercial and political propaganda encouraging them to defend others, not just themselves or their children.

This shit don't help. Especially not with grown women and mothers swallowing it hook, line, sinker.

That's because, in Ashi's case, it wasn't the main fight. The real fight was against her mother and the orc army was the apetizer.

They were literal jober so that Ashi's mother could sneak on Jack.

The main problem in this thrad is that people here are comparing Ashi's fight with the army as the main fight when in this case, it's just the opener.

It's why it's fair to compare this army fight to the one Jack had there>>91984917

Hey look! It's Ashi vs. the army. I love how Aku is bitching at the incompetence of these guys.
>>
>>91985925

Jack's survived re-entry (the suit broke on impact, so he took some of it), had his face shoved into a jagged mountain wall at terminal velocity and was literally unaffected (same with his hands), had a 700 ton sumo wrestler jump hundreds of feet in the air and crush him (Jack was unharmed), jumped around with a 100 ton boulder on his back like it was nothing, casually jumps hundreds of feet vertically and horizontally (many episodes), and can chuck a dude weighing 20 stone with one hand about 100 feet.

Jack has shown greater strength feats, but generally REALLY holds back to just go for the KO/disarm when possible. Ashi on the other hands is straight-up willing to kill the army with extreme brutality.
>>
>>91985879
>Women grow up believing they can be as competent and capable as men, be it in sports or combat, if they just train. That any gaps in brute strength can be overcome with agility or brains. That's what Western media has pushed for decades

>That's because, in Ashi's case, it wasn't the main fight. The real fight was against her mother and the orc army was the apetizer.

Yes but we saw how he can do that an entire episode was devoted to his training and it was pretty much never shown after that, Ashi can take out an army without breaking a sweat because....well I guess because she's Aku's daughter.

I don't hate Ashi. I don't mind her defeating hordes of enemies. I do think this was a pretty weak moment.

>b-but in the other seasons, silly shit happened!
Sure. SJ always had both silly and serious moments, and did both well for the most part. Yes, Ashi pushing her way through the army is rather similar to the Scotsman's wife pushing through the robot demons, but do you love that episode? It's a humorous moment: the two hardened warriors accepting death in battle, and then a fat woman charging through the enemy because they call her fat. But is it a classic episode? No.

I believe where SJ really shines is in its pacing, and this episode was pretty weak on that front. Episodes that really take their time and let the viewer become fully immersed are generally the most memorable ones.

Even though SJ has always had silly moments, did you really enjoy Ashi pushing through the army? Was it a good, well choreographed fight? No. It could have been much more methodical and entertaining, watching her fight through this endless horde to protect Jack. I don't mind silliness, but the scene was just weak. It's not the end of the world, it doesn't mean the new season is irredeemable garbage, but you shouldn't defend a bad sequence just because 'hurr, it was always silly!' They just could've done better.
And while quality is always better than quantity, I'm thinking that making this season only 10 episodes was a mistake.

I would agree if she was a character we knew of before season 5, but Ashi being is too much of a main component of the season, Jack literally cannot do anything on his own anymore.
>>
>>91987620
>Ashi being is too much of a main component of the season, Jack literally cannot do anything on his own anymore.

Jack was never able to defeat Aku and return to the past by himself, obviously evidenced by 50 years of walking the earth, alone, unsuccessfully trying to complete his quest.

Jack needing help isn't some mind-blowing, sudden development.

Except by the fact that he has defeated Aku before, If Jack wanted to kill Aku he probably could've set up a way to kill him, but his mission was always about getting back to the past, not defeating him in the future.

That's also a reason why this season is missing the mark, they have not explained the Guardian yet and I doubt they will.
>>
>>91987620
You realize how many chimps sperged out when they found out Ashi would get one episode dedicated to her, and here you are saying that we should've devoted more time to that?

And what would be the magic number, in a 10 episode season?

>Everyone likes her

Because of Samurai Jack. And even saying they like her is being presumptuous, it's more like "Hey she wants to help Jack, she must be a good person!"

And when Jack has understandably given up on the world and his cause, obviously we would need another character to help him out. Episode Six was entirely to establish that Jack would rally an army to fight against Aku.

What character would still be around from before Season 5, if Season 5 takes place 50 years after the others? Even the Scotsman was a shell of his former self. So, a new character is obvious. Use your head.
>>
>>91987930
Because if you are going to add a character you might as well develop them well, if you can't do that, then don't add the fucking character.

Genndy knew he had 10 episodes, that is not an excuse for the shitty pacing.
>>

>Except by the fact that he has defeated Aku before

Wrong. If Jack had defeated Aku before, Aku wouldn't still be around. He's gotten the upper hand in battle with Aku, but he's never actually beaten him. This much is not debatable.

> If Jack wanted to kill Aku he probably could've set up a way to kill him, but his mission was always about getting back to the past, not defeating him in the future.

This is really bad rationalizing. Jack wants to kill Aku; this isn't up for debate. Jack is unequivocally in favor of Aku being destroyed, in the past, present, or future. Killing him in the present (future) means he can't stop Jack from trying to go back to the past anymore. Pretending like Jack "isn't trying" to kill Aku is just fanboyism bursting at the seams. Jack has tried, and failed, for decades to defeat Aku.
>>
>>91987979
>Genndy knew he had 10 episodes, that is not an excuse for the shitty pacing.

But alright, let's give you the benefit of the doubt.

What exactly, in the events she was shown in episodes 4-6, not enough to convince her that Jack is actually a force of good and Aku was pure evil?

She literally saw years of evidence from people that would have no reason to lie to her.

And it's not good writting either, I've always had that problem with Jack and Aku, take "Jack Learns to Jump Good", he literally could've defeated Aku and got back to the past, but the episode just ends. It's just that this new season makes it extra-retarded because not only it implies that Jack has not been able to defeat Aku in 50 years but it implied that Aku has blocked every way to the past despite of we knowing of the Guardian. Adding this more of Jack failing just makes him seem incompetent compared to the Emperor without really explaining why, it's usually some Deus Ex Machina and boom, Aku gets away, for a kids cartoon, okay, but 50 years? I thought the whole point of Jack not killing Aku was because there was no point, he needs to go back to the past so that the Aku future can't exist, but they are playing it in the stupidest way possible.

I've never gotten this impression from the show. If Jack had the opportunity (like in many episodes where he tries to kill Aku in the future), he would kill Aku so that Aku would not pose a threat to his mission of trying to travel to the past. The idea that Jack "isn't trying" to kill Aku in the future because there's "no point" is facile. There absolutely is a point, and Jack tries on multiple occasions to kill Aku in the future, but never succeeds.

>Create a character to seek Jack with no internal conflict of their own

The Seppuku scene was so much more than "Jack pls", it was about convincing Jack that he had a purpose in the world, as he was convinced he had done nothing but sow more violence, he even thought the children that were enslaved to fight him died. So you're saying we should've dedicated Episode 7 to Jack backtracking Ashi's path, when he will inevitably meet up with all of these characters again anyway? Finding the sword was just step one.

Aku winning isn't dependent on Jack being dead; Aku winning is dependent on Aku remaining alive and Jack not returning to the past.

Aku has met his criteria for victory; Jack has not. Aku wins by living. Jack wins by getting back to the past. Aku has accomplished his goal; Jack hasn't. Jack lost.

Way to move the goalposts dude.
I have said in all my posts that Jack has defeated aku "in battle" every time they fight; and winning in battle is dependent on the surrender, retreat or death of the opponent. Every fight with aku has ended with Aku retreating. I have never said that either has achieved their ultimate goal.
>>
>>91981923
This. When Jack fought there's usually some gravity to it, even if it's just a small battle. Armies were still armies and Jack had to take care. You can't just blaze into an army unprepared and win. He'd make plans, weapons, traps or whatever was relevant.
Aishi just topples a couple thousand just by running into them really fast and knocking a 30 man thick collum of a path.
Waifus ruin everything. Genddy is NO exception sadly.
>>
>>91990300
If you're the one who said

>Ashi being is too much of a main component of the season, Jack literally cannot do anything on his own anymore.

and

> If Jack wanted to kill Aku he probably could've set up a way to kill him

You're still full of shit. Jack wants to kill Aku, and has failed in every attempt. Jack has tried for 50 years to kill Aku and it has been shown that he can't do it alone. "b-b-but Jack beat Aku in battle!" is not an argument when the battle ended with Aku getting away and Jack being right back at square 1. It's a pointless, cyclical point to return to every time someone points out that Jack has failed to defeat Aku in any meaningful capacity. Jack has gained the upper hand against Aku in battle, but he has never actually defeated him.
>>
>>91982813
IT was a bad sequence is what it was.
You could make a better scene with a protracted adn risky fight against 20 orcs. Like the Netflix Daredevil hallway scene. It could have over powering moments but also tense ones where Aishi is actually in the shit. Mulching 50 thousand men was shit and it LOOKED shit.

Also everything you have just can be applied to Aku as well, except that Aku has tried for 50 years and can't kill jack with limitless resources at his disposal. The entire purpose of this season is showing that neither Jack nor aku can decisively defeat the other in the states they were in. Ashi was introduced to be that one push to give jack an edge; In exactly what way she will do this(besides giving him his hope back) remains to be seen.

For these two:
>>91988133
>>91988286

The pedantic argument that "Jack defeated Aku in battle" and thus "Jack has beaten AKu" is a facile one. Defeating Aku in battle means literally nothing unless he actually puts the sword through Aku and ends his reign. Jack hasn't done this; Aku has always escaped and lived to continue his reign of terror. You can say Jack has beaten him in 1v1s all you want, but it doesn't make it meaningful or impactful to the story in any way.

For
>>91988479
My original response pointed out that Aku doesn't have to kill Jack in order for it to be a victory for him. Aku just has to not die and he gets to keep on reigning as supreme leader of the entire world. He'd prefer to kill Jack, but since he can't, simply living is enough. Jack beating Aku in 1v1s has no bearing on this point, as Jack clearly cannot kill Aku either, as Aku always gets away.
>>
>>91990858
ACTUAL CHOREOGRAPHY
ENEMIES WERE A THREAT

The priestess fight was MUCH better than the army scene. Even jack balks at armies and preps. Especially ones with those numbers. Also the *pick you up* shit was retarded and couldn't have pushed anyone past like 1/3 of the collum off. It looked retarded aesthetically but also in a how the fuck can that even happen sense.
>i-it's just a cartoon bro
No, it's nonsensical choreography both in terms of out physics and that of the shows internal logic.
>but she's strong
Being strong doesn't mean a single torso can push a collum especially not off a ledge in their entirety. It was dumb and destroyed any pacing and tension. Fucking awful.
Army fight was a complete mess.
>>
>>91988762
>>91989087
That's different though, they were both realistic fighters with a similar level of strength and dexterity. It was a realistic fight, in that the tone of the scene met the expectations of the audience.

Ashi's fight against the army wasn't at all coherent. It was jarring and felt fucking wrong as hell, and if Gennedy wasn't a hack he wouldn't have submitted his first draft as the final script

>>
>>91991142
This.
Shrink the army. Add proper choreography. Make it like 20 or so dudes trying to charge through at jack up the spiral path. Have aishi desperately killing/knocking them off being wary from attacks and dodging. Make some dicey moments were she gets surrounded (which is bad in fights). Have that she is unarmed aknwoledged like it is in the Priestess fight. Do some cool things with ascending and descending the spiral during the fight.
Seguwey to priestess fight at top after the fight was naturally progressing up as the army charged.

There. Not that fucking hard.
>>
>>91991008
This. I had to rewind just to see if I was watching it right.
It just set the entire start of the fight off on the wrong foot.
>>
>>91990978
way to ignore my actual response and just repeat what you've already said.
I'll add that It's a stretch to call Aku's state of fear and depression a victorious one. The one thing that can end his rule is still out there, and is biologically immortal. As long as jack is alive, Aku's rule is temporary. Neither of them have decisively won.
>>
Why doesn't Aku just fly outside of Jack's sword range and fire barrages of laser beams at him? He can't deflect forever.

That's even less plausible...

A small Asian woman, picking up a large, densely built, armored person and then pushing an entire formation of similarly burly individuals off of a cliff...

It's one level below a lone assassin charging and then effortlessly breaking through a shield wall 12 men wide and six men deep...

Disbelief can only be suspended so far...

Forget the robots, Jack being able to jump 50 feet into the air, surviving re-entry into Earth's atmosphere in a space suit, time traveling portals, a sword literally made by gods, another magical sword owned by a Scotsman with a gun for a leg, Jack defeating an entire robot army because one enemy trips causing a catastrophic and high improbable chain of events that destroys every single one of them without having to draw his sword. But Ashi fighting an army and winning? That's where we draw the line.

.... Do you know who samurai fucking Jack is?

not at all.
episode 1
>while hanging by her fingers from a rock, her mom crushes her knuckles with a staff, ashi powers through and uses that one arm to propel herself 15 feet into the air with enough balance to land on her feet with a flip. She is also able to fire a bow in quick succession with lethal draw as she is scaling a wall.

episode 2
>swings what is essentially a blade on a chain with enough force to crush about 20 feet worth of stone
Episode 3- I can't think of a specific one off the top of my head
Episode 4- ditto because she's tied up the whole time, although she shows impressive leg strength
Episode 5-Chucks a largely built human wearing a mech suit hard enough to cause an explosion.
Episode 6-Uses a slab of rock larger than her whole body as a shied from a ghost with unknown strength(said stone splits down the middle before her grip gives out)

these are all of the top of my head, so there could be more examples if I searched the episodes, but I don't feel up for it.
>>
>>91991668

Yes...

There is always a baseline of reality that the audience will default to unless the setting explicitly demonstrates otherwise...

Ashi has been established as a turncoat assassin, skilled in stealth, hit-and-run tactics and a variety of weaponry and martial techniques. At no point was the audience made to believe that she had the brute strength necessary to practically flick aside combatants that are almost twice her size and weight...

She was completely surrounded at one point, which mean nowhere to regroup, or evade to, yet she still managed to knock out/kill all of her opponents without getting so much as a nasty scratch for her trouble...

...

I personally find it quite jarring, but if you can overlook it more power to you...

If by "ignore" you mean "directly address", sure. >>91989551
> Aku has accomplished his goal; Jack hasn't. Jack lost.
>>91988409
>Aku won all of those engagements.
?
>>
>>91992669
Aku's goal was to rule the world. Guess what? He's ruled the world for thousands of years. Jack being alive doesn't change that. Aku still wants to kill Jack, but Aku has still already won. Until Jack either kills Aku or returns to the past, Aku is the default winner, as he controls the world. This doesn't mean they're not in a physical stalemate.

Ask Jack if he thinks Aku hasn't won anything. I think Jack would say Aku has won very, very much, in that he controls literally everything.

You don't seem to be understanding that "Aku has been winning for thousands of years" and "Aku still wants to deal with the Jack problem" are not mutually exclusive ideas.

Do you understand that Aku is in charge, in control, and has unequivocally come out on top despite never actually killing Jack? Because he is. The dynamic between Aku and Jack is that Aku has everything and Jack has nothing but his training and his sword; the odds against Jack are astronomical because Aku *already* won thousands of years ago. In order to stop the current Aku from continuing to win, Jack has to either kill him or return to the past. "Defeating Aku in battle" does not mean anything if Aku gets away at the end and continues to reign supreme.
