The problem is that there really isn't "legit criticism" of Ashi, because she isn't the culprit of the writing shift. The writing shift is due to the story structure changing (i.e. moving from a status-quo episodic structure to a story arc). And while this change has obviously rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, it's a subtle and difficult thing to recognize or articulate feelings about.

So people hone in on the obvious, loud changes, and the easiest one is the new character. She couldn't have existed in the old structure, and nearly every valid complaint directed at her is resultant from her persistence in the story (i.e. if she died in episode three, she would be adored). The truth of the matter, is that all the beloved characters in Samurai Jack are painfully flat, and that kind of writing only works in the short episodic format where quickly announcing character traits works to your advantage and they don't stay on stage long enough to be recognized as completely flat.

Ashi isn't really what people don't like, but people do seem to have a problem with the new narrative structure and Ashi has become a lightning rod for that area of criticism.
