Did Morty die or something?
>>
That just makes me spit on Summer. If you have access to an asset like Rick, and you're a shitty dead-end human being, that's YOUR fault.
>>
>>91970766

I dunno, it just kind of calls attention to the unwritten contract the show has with the audience. Rick and Morty go on adventures. How Rick convinced Beth and Jerry to agree to this, and why they keep doing it, are only ever implied. Once you actually bring up that this was obviously stupid it just raises other questions.

It's a Watchman scenario where you're so quick to try looking clever you don't realize you just opened another can of worms that seems like a deal as big or bigger.
>>
>>91970809
Childhood is thinking Rick is fun.

Adulthood is knowing Jerry was right... and Beth is an alcoholic cunt who isn't even in the same percentages as her father or even son.
>>

I don't think any of the viewers hate Jerry, it's just the people in the show that actually shit on him, and that I think makes him more likable to the viewers.

He was the only one in the family, until Morty recently started seeing things clearly, that actually sees through Rick's bullshit.

The writers have been working pretty hard to portray him as a pathetic weasel in season 2. I think he's being flanderized in response to Rick becoming more and more depraved.
>>
>>91971339

I don't hate Rick or Beth or Jerry. I just kind of think they're all shitty people.

But reddit won't hate Rick because crazy science antics, and they won't shit on Beth because white knighting is still very much a thing. That just leaves Jerry with his cowardice, his insecurity, and his massive inferiority complex. He's an easy safe target to pick on.

Because he's the guy who knows what's best for you. He's your parents, he's your teachers, he's your boss. He refuses this dimension hopping, wish granting, adventure seeking madman out of the notion that you'll get hurt if you follow him.

And you know what? HE'S RIGHT. Remember when Rick abandoned them in their original universe because he fucked it up with Cronenbergs? Remember when was willing to let his family stay on a minuscule Earth to avoid the Feds? Remember when he put a deadly virus in some Cherry Garcia?

Detractors will say something like "Rick is so smart, he can simply fix all those things, he'll always have a plan, etc." Ignoring the Cronenberg incident, yes, Rick is very smart, and seemingly thinks of everything, like how he took down the Federation in the season 3 premiere.

A lot of people want and expect Rick, and all characters for that matter, to have an eventual defining trait. They're either good guys or bad guys. They're heroes (or anti-heroes) or villains. They might be assholes, but always do the right thing in the end. Or they're just assholes.

But Rick is a very flawed person and his affection for his family, along with it his heroism, seems to comes whenever convenient. He seemingly had every intention of staying with Unity and nearly killed himself when she broke up with him. He took the One Free Morty coupon. Hell, in the very first scene he was going to blow up the planet in a drunken stupor. Yes, he turned himself in at the end of season 2, but one can argue it was all a plot to destroy the Feds from the inside. His rant at the end of season 3's premiere very strongly suggests he really is in it for himself, and bends emotions to fit that, such as making Morty believe in him because he likes having him as a sidekick.

Back to Jerry, he cares about his family's safety and stability. He's flawed too, bit of a coward, lacking skills, boring if nothing else. But he has genuine affection.
>>
>>91971467
Glad to see others noticed that Jerry was made to look more pathetic in season two. I guess they thought it was too easy to take his side in season one when Rick's a huge asshole and Beth's a hopeless enabler.
>>
>>91970766
>>91970809
source?
>>
is that from a porn comic?
>>
I'm hoping they do one or both of these things with Jerry this season:

1. He's living a good life, gets a meager but stable job somewhere, has a nice little condo, maybe the car he's always wanted, and dates a co-worker (whose dad is dead.) He's doing just fine without Beth and his kids, suggesting they may have been the problem with him all along. But of course, this isn't true, and eventually he realizes his love for Beth is strong enough that it supersedes a normal, happy life. Much like her love for Rick does the same. It might come off sappy and even as the ultimate cucking, but his willingness to suffer for his love is something more genuine than Rick would have displayed.

2. Rick realizes that, just as every Rick must have a Morty, so must they too have a Jerry. Jerry is his control point, the thing that keeps him from going too crazy for his own good. Imagine what it'll be like without Jerry: Beth will allow him to take Morty wherever whenever and be ready and waiting with pancakes when they decide to return, Summer will tag along now and again but mostly be left to her own devices, and Morty, whose trust in Rick wanes, will have no choice to be continue his role as the sidekick. Rick will have no buffer, nobody saying it's a bad idea besides Morty, whom he ignores anyway. He'll always get his way, and that's not too good for anybody, let alone a genius scientist, whose very being is designed to solve problems.

Right now. You are in a board about cartoons and comic books. This is not /his/, this is not /pol/. You are pretending to be an independent thinker and you brought up religion in a thread discussing comics, and cartoons. Both of us by the way, joined to talk about fucked up moments that made you think about life for a solid moment in these mediums, a full solid moment.
Think of one criticism you have of how liberal modern day society is. You don't have to call me out as a /pol/tard or whatever, I'm not cramming the idea into your head that everything before segregation ended was better One critism of modern day culture due to liberalism. That can be traced back to overly liberal college, high school, middle, and even primary school teachers pushing liberal ideas onto people too young too understand. You are no independent thinker. Being religious is not an independent thinking, but there is genuine thought in it for those who take the time to really read the bible and disconcert it's messages. Tell me what the differences between a kid who was taken to church every Sunday by his parents and listen to the man on stage preach versus the child who, growing up in a liberal society, watches an hours worth of you tube videos of atheists speaking on stage every few backing up his own pre-existing ideas on the religion?

No one hates Jerry. He's being shit on to make you like him.

Harmon says he does this in his writing too, the person who draws the most sympathy tends to become the hero of the story, and the more everyone makes fun of Jerry the more the viewers will like him. He's being set up as hated on purpose.
>>
>>91971339
They don't. It's just memes like whenever they bring up Doofus Rick , and someone will bring up how he literally eats shit and it's legitimately funny to quote the bully/background character in these threads.
Don't get me wrong Jerry certainly has his flaws. He's constantly a coward and dependding on how you look at it he's either more willing to fight with nhis family than protect them or reasonably more willing to talk things out with his family before jumping in to protect them of space bugs with disintegration rays pointed at his family brought on by his father in law.

>Afraid of Entropy, or that it can "get the upper hand"
Just to clarify, Entropy is not "The Nothingness" (or whatever its name was) from The Neverending Story.
It's simply a fact of life that since stars and all other objects in space are constantly spreading energy in all directions, and the majority of directions has nothing in it that could re-absorb it, eventually over untold billions of years, the Universe will get to a point where there are no significant concentrations of energy left.

If there is an all powerful god, even assuming his first answer wouldn't be to just make a new universe, there's countless ways he could counter-act this, ranging from as simple as removing some of the wayard energy and reintroducing it somewhere else in a concentrated form, to something complicated such as some crazy complicated law of (quantum)physics that we can't even imagine yet, which somehow recycles that energy.
It's not completely unthinkable that somewhere such a process exists, but it's either not within the observable universe, or it's in a form that we can't properly measure yet and as such can't understand.

Ice King went temporarily sane and opened a portal to the past to apologize for freaking her out when he started to become crazy. She instead leaps into the future, Ice King goes back to being crazy, she gets Magic Man's powers, then tries and fails to turn Ice King back into Simon. Ooo gets fucked up by elementals and magic, Finn wants to fix things and she says she knows how, but instead tricks him into giving her the princess' jewels and the Enchirideon from the Farmworld dimension. She tries to erase the current timeline and go back to before Simon wore the crown, but she fails at that too and is transported to Mars.

Fuck that.

People hate Jerry because, despite being right about Rick 80% of the time, he doesn't put his foot down until Season 3, when it's way too late to change anyone's minds. Because he's so inherently self-centered that he got fooled by a simulation running at 10%. Because he was stupid enough to try and play alpha dog with Snowball and got his face rubbed in his own piss for it. Because he sucks, and he drags everyone down to festering mediocrity the same way that Rick drags everyone towards a fiery death. And most people would rather take the latter in their animated characters.

/co/ as of late loves to believe that Jerry's actually this really decent, competent guy who just needs to get out of Rick's shadow to succeed (which is weird because, less than a year ago, you fuckers knew better). But Jerry's truly brave and altruistic points are just as 'convenient' as Rick's bouts of familial affection. Jerry sold out the Plutonians until it was practically too late. Jerry forced Beth to fend off a violent homeless dude by herself while he hid in the car. Jerry tried to exploit Summer for loan money. He dragged Beth to a Titanic tour that she had no fucking interest in seeing. Jerry refuses to sit down for a day or two and try working things out with his wife, despite their enmity being so strong that it caused that shit in Big Trouble In Little Sanchez. Even in Rixty Minutes, when he didn't have the rest of the family to drag him down, he was basically a smug jerk hiding crippling issues. Face it. Your waifu's fucking trash.

They did redeem it a bit, but I'm always a bit iffy on time travel in cartoons.

Ozymandias's plan to destroy New York and do it thirty five minutes ago is cool and all, but it's predicated on a squid monster made from the brain of a dead psychic.

But the entire existence of psychics was out of left field. The entire idea that there CAN be other people besides Manhattan with superpowers was never even explored. The very existence of such a concept means that the entire story should play out differently, because now instead of it being Dr. Manhattan as a god and everyone else as mere mortals suddenly it becomes a sliding scale and every other nation has an alternate path to their own supermen that's actually viable.

The implication, as I saw it, was that psychics exist here in the real world too, they're powers are just not remotely impressive enough to qualify as superpowers. Ozy amplified their powers into a crude superweapon using genetic engineering, but even then it wasn't very precise.

I hate these kind of people.

They never found any real meaning in life other than 'life sucks then you die' then there are the fags who boil life down to 'the chemicals in your brain'

Maybe they should pursue art/science/or something that gives you meaning. Dear god.
>>
>>91980212

I think you miss the implication.

If Ozy knows as a matter of course that psychics are verified to be real and can amplify them to the point of a nuclear blast, then amplifying psychic powers is possible and psychic powers have to be a thing other people know about.

The SECOND that Manhattan took Vietnam the Russians would be throwing psychics through the grinder until they had something, to the point of probably abandoning other projects since supermen clearly outstrip nuclear power in a very visible way.

This. So Hard this. It's always appalled me how everyone here immediately took Jerry's side after the divorce was announced.

Jerry was never a good person to begin with. He had just as much a role in Beth's life's decline as she did (aside from the obvious factor) and yet he constantly mocked her job even after he (and his replacement presumably) were fired and Beth was the only breadwinner. He's almost never been interested in Summer as a person and only the original Jerry was interested in Morty's well being; the latter pushed his son under the bus for a shot at fame and accolades over an opinion he KNEW was wrong.

The only reason anyone ever has any sympathy for him is because at face value he's the character who -always- gets dumped on aside from Morty (and Morty some of the time walks into his own misfortune,) and is technically right about Rick but show some fucking perspective.

I like and sympathize with Jerry because he's the Frank Grimes of the series. I don't think he's right. He's a coward and a jerk. But he's not anymore shitty than anyone else on the show and he's consistently punished for even mentioning such an idea.

But for me that's what makes the whole thing funny. I'm almost always frustrated and amused by how the universe bends over backwards to fuck over Jerry specifically while rewarding the rest of the family at just about every opportunity. Here's a guy who realizes he lives in a silly cartoon world except when he's literally put into a silly cartoon world in-universe.

I think he's one of the few examples of the Butt Monkey that actually works for me. Probably because the show admits that he's right about Rick and many of Beth's issues but never loses sight about how much else he's absolutely wrong about

Not a panel per se but this passage just sums existence as a whole.

There's just no sense to anything.

Who can know why the Cosmic Balance exists, why Fate exists and the Lords of the Higher Worlds? Why there must always be a champion to fight such battles? There seems to be an infinity of space and time and possibilities. There may be an infinite number of beings, one above the other, who see the final purpose, though in infinity, there can be no final purpose. Perhaps all is cyclic and this same event will occur again and again until the universe is run down and fades away as the world we knew has faded. Meaning, Elric? Do not seek that, for madness lies in such a course.”

“No meaning, no pattern. Then why have I suffered all this?”

“Perhaps even the gods seek meaning and pattern and this is merely one attempt to find it. Look—” he waved his hands to indicate the newly formed Earth. “All this is fresh and moulded by logic. Perhaps the logic will control the newcomers, perhaps a factor will occur to destroy that logic. The gods experiment, the Cosmic Balance guides the destiny of the Earth, men struggle and credit the gods with knowing why they struggle—but do the gods know?”

Meaning, Elric? Do not seek that, for madness lies in such a course.

We as humans lose often lose ourselves in seeking meaning. We do not see the true answer, for it lies in the one thing we fear above all else: the void of nothing.

It is true that seeking meaning leads to madness, when you seek meaning in a transient plane. But the truth lies in the void, in embracing nonexistence, and the nothing we were born from.

Dr, Manhattan isn't as edge as people like to think he is.

Literally imagine that you're just some shmuck working at a job that brings you a smidgen of creature comforts and then you suddenly gain such a magnitude of knowledge of the workings of the universe that you are to humans as humans are to a blade of grass. You suddenly understand every single facet of what ACTUALLY makes humans think the way they do, and realize you went from standing in a crowd of people you can connect with to standing in an open field with nothing be the deafening sound of silence because there is nothing in the living world that you can relate to anymore. He isn't edgily "superior" to humans' he's basically an entirely separate sentience that understands without a doubt that YES, all human interact is just a bunch of chemicals that don't matter in the grand scheme of things.
>>
>>91986374
You guys keep talking like the second universe's versions of the family are meaningfully different people than those from the first universe, but I really don't think that's the intention. The point of divergence for universe 2 is almost definitely just Rick solving the Cronenberg crisis. The alternate Smith family are effectively the exact same people as the originals until that point.
If Jerry treats Morty worse now, it's because Jerry has changed, not because of the universe jump.
>>

NOBODY in this show is a good person. The difference is everyone except for Jerry gets a moment to shine, and the audience is expected to laugh at Jerry's misfortune even when he never really set himself up for a pratfall, with the joke being that Jerry kind of sucks and so we should laugh at him no matter the context.

Jerry may have brought Beth down as a person as much as vice versa, but Jerry is the only one who wound up jobless. Jerry is the one who arranged a fake ambulance for her and he's the one who bends over backwards to please other people while there's no concern for the reverse. He's the guy who has to admit that some part of him sees Beth as a goddess while Beth didn't realize jack shit about Jerry.

Yes, he tried to grift his daughter for money. He fails constantly. But that's not the point. The point is we're expected to sympathize with a drunken vet over an incompetent ad man solely because Harmon and Roland don't seem to like marketing people.

There are certainly people who overtly romanticize mental issues, PTSD included, and admittedly I am more inclined to believe a soldier who says they have PTSD than a college student, but like I said, as far as I know our minds don't necessarily perceive trauma on a scale from "weak" to "strong." I just have zero tolerance for anyone who compares their "ptsd" to a solders ptsd, that all.

Makes sense to me. I suppose it comes down to how people's minds were conditioned as they grew up. My mother grew up in a third world country and came to America as a refugee, and she often tells me about the stuff she went through in order to come here but in a humorous and lighthearted manner. Meanwhile, a classmate at this program I attended had a huge panic attack over an onstage reading about rape (well, a rape fetish to be specific but still.) Funny how things work like that

>Well yes, some people find that stuff funny
Except they don't do that in the show, everytime rick is suicidal it's got sad music and an all around depressing atmosphere that attempts to make it sad and deep.
This gives the rest of the show especially when rick is talking about nihilistic and depressing themes "deep undertones"
in an attempt to make the show seem deeper more intelligent or give it more emotional impact.

The show tries to be deep and anyone saying otherwise doesn't watch the show or is lying in an attempt to make the show seem better when other people complain about how edgy and faux-deep it is.
>>
>>91971343
what comic is this from?
>>
>>92001645
Yet those moments are few and far between, to the point they can be ignored in a few cases. The show is largely just comedy, it attempting deepness is just that, attempting.
>>
Just caught up. Quite a show.

Never thought the divorce seemed a real prospect. All the touching moments they had will now be underlined with 'lol they still split'

The way the ep ended with Rick getting everything his way and Morty being privy to his real attitudes makes me think the season's setting things up to turn against Rick. If the writers are actually serious that is. Either way, Morty's sympathy for his father and apprehension of Rick will do something.

Does ep2 have a date?
>>
>>92001678
>Doubt the show is trying to be deep,
> it attempting deepness is just that, attempting.
so the show does attempt to be deep, which is a part of what people complain about when discussing it.
>>
>>92001688
At least it was something new instead of "lol, they made up for the 50th time!"

I don't know if they were trying to get somewhere with the reconciliations of the past or if they gave up. Either way, this at least could lead somewhere. Maybe Jerry finally stops being a little bitch and mans up like the Cronenbergverse one. Or they just kill him "for laughs" and we don't have to deal with his shit anymore.
>>
>>92001715
Because it clearly doesn't stay consistent. One moment Rick is depressed over losing his sort of girlfriend, then just roughhousing around the galaxy. It's hardly trying in the same way things like Venture Bros, Bojack, and even early Simpsons have where they usually maintain some of those characters depths even if the moments are sporadic.
>>

Prove it then, retard. Prove we don't think differently. What do you think we're doing right now in this "discussion" of ours?

Also, I didn't make up anything, you can literally google Independent thought and see for yourself. But I guess that'd be too much ofr a mouth breathing idiot like you to do.

>free will isn't real
Oh sure. How could I forget the giant six-headed chicken that guides us all!

You really are a fucking retard.

>proper writing and interpunction

You insufferable autistic manchild! This is literally the first time I have ever felt such disgust at a poster for posting an otherwise innocous idiotic comment.

And I use "literally" here in its most literal and proper sense. I have a hard time quantifying the revulsion I have for your being, the gulf of apathy I feel for your plight. This is an almost spiritual experience for me, this new understanding of the ample breadth of my emotions. So I hope you'll understand just how sorely inadequate I feel in expressing myself, but kill yourself.

Please.
>>
>>92001791
Nope, the show is going to end with Morty killing Rick
>>
>>92001796
Didn't move anything at all. They're hardly trying. Just because they try doesn't mean they actually are achieving it.
>>
>>92001851
Lol. Go fuck off.
I also really love the part where you ignore how I completely called out your retarded excuse of a definition of what you idiot call ""independent thought"". Good job, you idiot.
Wanna continue?
What are those "things" you mention and what is "reason", you dumb fuck?
>>
>>92001878
>Didn't move anything at all
you literally went from arguing that "the show isn't trying to be deep, it's just trying to be funny" to "it attempting deepness is just that, attempting"
That is moving goal posts.
>>
>>92001910
I didn't ignore anything, retard. But please, keep ignoring the facts given to you so you can keep memeing this shitty "we're all controlled and think alike" nonsense.
>>
>>91988716
He sounds so tired when he says that; I have no problem believing the turmoil he's going through.
>>
>>92001861
Just ignore it. It's the go-to response for people who have no argument.
>>
>>91999811
Real nihilism is much more than that. All these angsty nihilist teens are just lions who crave freedom but are too damn weak and cowardly to actually do something with the knowledge that life has no meaning other than trying to sound deep and intelligent rubbing it in people's faces. Now, the Child, the Superman, that's something else. That's living by your own rules and views on morality without fear of judgement or rejection. That's completely opposite to the generalized concept of nihilism. It's an invitation to enjoying life to its fullest because you're going to die anyway and life in general can suck big time, so it's up to you to make it suck as little as possible.

Somebody posted on /tg/ and the more I think about the more I agree with it: Rick Sanchez is the best example of Chaotic Evil in recent fiction. Rick isn't the hero, he's not even the anti-hero, he is and always has been the villain of the show.
Can a villain have feelings? Yes, but the value he places on them is pretty random from day to day hour to hour, and the things he feels about aren't the same things that a normal sane person would feel about.

There's not going to be one big redemption arc for Rick in this show. Unless I've missed my guess completely Rick's already HAD his big arc before episode 1 s1. He's already won his happy ever after and get's to spend the rest of his days living in his daughters house eating pancakes and either being the ruination or creation of his grandson. His only goal right now is that Szechuan Dipping Sauce, or whatever it will be tommorow.
We only see hints and bits and pieces of this, because this ISN'T a story about Rick Sanchez's character arc, this is a story about Morty's, and maybe Summer every so often as well.
>>
>>92002220
>rick is a plotmobile for morty beth jerry and summer
I have doubts
>>
>>91979298
The usual answer to this I hear is that it's a parody of Silver Age goofiness, which was itself a response to a moral panic and the introduction of strict censorship. The irony in this Silver Age goof plot the heroes fucked up and millions of people died.

But I can see how you could argue that's merely clever but not smart writing.
>>
>>92001178
I think you got it the other way around faggot.
>>
>>91971116
why doesn't Jerry just work out and use an anti science sword to defeat Rick
>>
>>92002253

Really just Morty. Sometimes Summer.

Think of it this way, in shows like He-Man, Samurai Jack, Thundercats etc. Who are the two characters who appear the most in the series, have the most lines, and often have the most interactions with each other? Is it the Hero and his Father? The Hero and his Sister? The Hero and his comic relief companion? Sometimes for that last one. But usually it's the Show Lead and it's the Show Villain.

Rick is the Villain

Morty is the hero. A poor one to be sure at this point, but he's still the guy who struggles to correct Rick's horrific douchebaggery and try to call him out on it.

>Rick's enslaved an entire planet just power his car
>Morty calls it monstrous slavery

>Rick sells a supergun to a space assassin
>Morty calls him out on that as well

>Rick attempts to turn a hobo into a biological themepark
>Morty is supportive of his grandfathers impressive, legal and non-morally reprehensible venture

Of course, the more time Morty spends with Rick, the more blurred that line might become.
>>
>>92002253
Well he does rant about Summer and maybe sometimes Beth getting in on the fun. Of course, it's hard to tell how much of that season premiere rant was serious, given how it just seemed to be a more obscene version of the one he delivered in the pilot episode, just with Morty being more coherently aware of things instead of having an anally induced wig out.

The meme fags shitting on this show are so embarrassing. They feel as if they are rebelling but they're right in line with everyone else, smelling the fumes of their own arogant farts.

Farts can't be arrogant.

Except, if "nothing matters" as this show constantly reminds us, then why should we care if Rick is a good person? Why should we care if he lives or dies? Why is the show demanding we get invested in his drama after insisting that we shouldn't get invested in anything?

It's almost like R&M pandered so hard to Reddit scum that it wrecked what it was actually trying to accomplish.

vancian magic, or like, a genie?

Depends on how the magic works. If it's got a logical means to it, then it's just a form of science that is above the understanding of others.

the writers try to make Rick a hypocrite to make him seem deeper as a character, something about how "you can't get away from your feelings even if you know the right answer is to kill yourself or not care about anything because everything turns to shit"
