OH, FUN FACT: we'll never know who the priestess was because she fell off a cliff. so like the horse samurai guy she's another disappointment.
>>
It doesn't matter who she was before she put on the mask.

I'm confused, why did you think either the priestess or the horseman need more development? Pretty clear what they're contribution is

You know, it's funny when people complain about unresolved plot points when that shit happened on an episodic basis in the original show.
>>
Isn't it sort of established in Samurai Jack that the elder spirits help Jack when he's in need?

It was a matter of finding himself again, removing the evil within him and reforming the peace inside.
>>

are you literally so dumb that when a show talks about suicide constantly while showing to a dark figure on a horse and playing discordant music you wonder "who is that?"

In all fairness until the episode where he took Jack to seppuku it wasn't exactly clear what his thing was. He left a pretty vague "IT IS TIME"

Nah, I'm not this OP.

My thread was complaining about complainers but unfortunately anons (and the mod) seem to have misunderstood my intentions.
>>
>>91968414
Because folks got autistic about "muh deeper meaning n shiet!", when really the Horseguy was just Japanese Death, and the identity of the Priestess is probably just an unknown, just a masked evil that's meant to be Ashi's inner demons, though a bit more physical.

Also the underlying problem we've been kinda seeing since Episode 5, that Gennedy remembered "Oh shit I have 10 episodes to finish the whole show while all the grown up fans watch with anticipation!" So most of the slower gradual development probably got thrown out so we can focus on Jack going from sad depressed Biker dude, into the Jack we all know and recognize.

After tonight we now have one final episode to go before the two-parter finale that's going to end Samurai Jack as best as Gennedy can.
>>
>>91968339
>we'll never know who the priestess was because she fell off a cliff.
Grey was in the recording booth with Phil and Tara for the finale session. Either the Priestess or a sister is coming back.
>>
>>91968485
It would be extremely painful
>>
>>91968562
Man I barely even watched Samurai Jack and I knew this.
Maybe that's OP's problem? He never watched the original. I suppose if that's the case then the whole spiritual and spirits and seppuku shit can be confusing, or at least, unexpected
>>
Ashi's mother was pretty shit tier fighter

I mean, I know her focus was on Jack but she couldn't even sense an arrow coming. Hell, she could barely fight off her own pupil. What a dumb cunt. That single arrow killed her too.
>>
>>91968339
>we'll never know who the priestess was

Was anyone legitimately curious? Unless it was someone Jack fought before, it doesn't really matter. And even if it was, who cares? The only thing the Priestess needed to be was a crazy cultist who popped out seven babies to kill Jack.
>>
>>91968727
Im pretty sure it was the fall.
>>
>>91968672
It's kind of funny you mention the "oh shit 10 episodes" because honestly watching the last one I was hoping for more advances to the plot.

>>
The amount of people saying "muh why no info on priestess and why bad ending for horseman" makes me really afraid for when this series ends and Demongo never makes another appearance since these retards post a million times a day about how they think he's going to come back.
>>
>>91968785
He has three episodes for Jack and Ashi to meet the big rebel army, storm Aku's castle, have the big final showdown with Aku, Have Jack (probably) return to the past, and on top of ALL OF THAT, have a epilogue to the WHOLE thing. All in three weeks.

That's a tall order to fill up.
>>
>>91968917
That army was terrible.
There's no way someone who spent 20 years training 7 girls for one purpose was actually relying on them to get anything done lel
>>
>>91968926
I kinda blame Gennedy for having the first four episodes be kinda slow in development, because it kinda set the precedent that we were going to see something happen slowly or something.

Like I said, Episode 5 was when Gennedy went "Oh shit I should probably go somewhere with all of this since I'm halfway through my final season!".
>>
>>91968930
>Have Jack (probably) return to the past
Honestly I don't think that's happening. Genndy said the ending would be bittersweet and not everyone would like it and I could see Jack accepting that he can't go back happening.
>>
>>91968993
Yeah he did say that every episode would have "a new reveal" and really so far that isn't true at all. One cool thing has happened in each episode, but not many "reveals".
>>
>>91968990
They were probably there to distract Ashi, not attack Jack.
>>
>>91968930
>have an epilogue to the WHOLE thing.
is this really necessary or even important? i ask because we have seen how style is prioritized over plot in past seasons. an ending where things finish just at the very last second wouldn't surprise me, i know there is a narrative term for that kind of thing but it escapes me now
>>
>>91969005
Hence why I said "probably". There's nothing to really say anything at this point. I'm just along for the ride to see how the whole thing ends.

And if Jack and Ashi fug
>>
>>91969061
Well...yeah. You can't just have Jack stare out and go "I guess I'm not going back to the past, but at least Aku is dead right" as he winks to the camera. After years of waiting for the final season, fans are going to WANT some kind of epilogue.
>>
the big problem is that the gods give Jack his sword, he just accepts that he got mad 50 years ago.

and that whole "the sword left me" is bullshit. the sword got knocked over a hole. it didn't dissapear into thin air or floated away to go back to the gods. Jack and Ashi should've found the sword in the bottom of the hole.

I don't care what the meaning is, it's still an asspull.
>>
>>91969034

They fucked up by ordering only 10 episodes.

They fucked up by bringing Ashi into it IF, IF, they were only going to do 10 episodes. I don't hate Ashi, or her arc, but they can't do it right, and haven't, in 10 episodes, and her story taking up this much time is making two stories worse, not one story better.

Ashi doesn't act like someone that grew up in a cave. She was redeemed too quickly. She became 'waifu masturabation' material instantly.

Jack has demons, which was properly set up, but not properly explored, and not properly resolved. It's all happening to quickly.

Ashi sort of felt useless that episode
Yeah she fought guys off while Jack meditated but I mean, is that really worthy of a new protagonist you've wrote into the show.
I feel like she sort of needs to justify her existence in a way, sort of like a "what's even the point of you? What are you going to add?"

I don't hate Ashi though. I also get that she was the one to restore hope to Jack, but that could also have been wrote in a different way with a character who wouldn't then go on to be partners with Jack

>suddenly can't do a complete 180
It's not sudden though and it's not a complete 180.

Her entire life was her thinking Jack was the bad guy and Aku was a top Lad. Her life was KILL JACK BRING BACK GOOD. Then through time, she realised Jack wasn't so bad and she didn't 180, she just became KILL AKU BRING BACK GOOD.
It's not like she ever felt she was a villain or in the wrong. All her life she felt she was doing good, but she wasn't, and only now is she actually doing good.

I do get your point about the paragon stuff, I can agree there it's not been best handled but they do constantly drop hints that Ashi was "different", sort of hinting it was already within her character.
Of course, that doesn't really fit someone to be different with 25 years of indoctrination, things like her caring about Ladybugs would have been beaten out of her. I don't really buy that her entire life she spent with those doubts because really, it's not like she had much place to build those doubts when she was literally being life controlled and knew nothing else.
But that's a different point. The fact is they do hint Ashi was different and her character is seen as somehow having all that paragon stuff even when she was with Priestess. That's how they've wrote her

Bigger issue is the narrative. How does she understand the concepts of good and evil? Kids don't understand morals all that well and are very opportunistic, what they see in their youth impressions on them.
For 15+ years you are exposed to the idea that your whole life is to kill one man. Morality is rather a moot point.
I mean hell how would she know what she saw was "evil" her whole life was basically Aku's empire structure.

So am I the only one who had Initial D playing through my head as Ashi pushed off all those soldiers from the mountain?
>>
So am I the only one who just felt like this whole episode was really lazy? You know I have no objection to Ashi fighting an army, if it's done well, and I have no objection to Jack going on a vision quest to find himself so he can find the sword cause the sword is mystic bullshit like that so a mystic bullshit answer does the trick. I have no objection to Jack facing his demons. I have no objection to the gods helping jack. I object to lazy fight scenes like Ashi pushing half an army down like she was a bowling ball going through pins. I object to the demons going bye bye in like point two three seconds. I object to how lame the vision quest was. I object to the gods just throwing him a bone and now all his problems are solved. Guidance sure, send him on a quest or something, but just "lol here's some new digs and a sword mate" don't sit right with me. It just all seemed like a lazy way to do things that could have been good. I actually liked the season up till now, but I don't know about this episode. It really really irritated me.

Not only that but I think a lot of anons are intentionally ignoring some narrative. Jack is already losing hope that any more portals exist , and not only that but it's hit rage that kills the goats, he doesn't look for any option to save them, he goes for a killing blow each time , because in that moment he loses himself . Then it all comes back full circle with Jack realizing why he couldn't find his sword , it was because of his rage and frustrations , and learns to balance himself. It's a pretty ok episode t b h, id give it a 8/10
>>
It's not just that it only got 10 episodes. That's only part of the problem. The real issue is that it was initially supposed to be a movie. You can see the movie pacing all over the place.

It'd be nice if they'd have been able to make a full series out of it, but an actual ending is good enough. I'd still love to see "The Adventures of Jack and Ashi" for more than like one episode.

Hey Arnold.

trauma/grievance over his parent's disappearance. several episodes deal with the theme of Arnold's parents. the episode "The Journal" narrated their lives, Arnold's birth and the reason they left, it set up the map to their destination and in the upcoming movie, Arnold will find closure or even meet his parents if they're still alive.

>>91969996

They're all fine ideas in and of themselves the pacing was just off. This could've easily been two episodes, one to have Ashi defend the mountain and have Jack going through his various visions with the second focusing on the priestess and Ashi's fight and Jack actually overcoming his inner demons.

It all just happened so damn fast, like the span of 10 minutes Aishi defeats an army and her Mother while Jack confronts and overcomes his anger and gets his sword back. Literally bang bang bang one right after the other. And this is after an opening that wasn't really that engrossing ("How'd I lose my sword? Well, this one time I fought some baby goats and dropped the sword and it fell down a hole and I sure as hell didn't feel like climbing...")

The last few episodes have just run into some pacing issues. They all kind of meander through a basic adventure (escape a monster, prove Aku is evil, find Jack, find the sword) and in the last few minutes realizing not much has been accomplished towards the overall plot throw in a major character/story plot point (Ashi not wanting to kill Jack, Jack succumbing to hopelessness, Jack regaining hope, Jack finding his sword) before setting up the next episode and it just isn't grooving well. I think they would've done well to combine Ashi trusting Jack and proving Aku is evil as one larger adventure. Jack losing hope should've been the major focus of that episode instead of callbacks to the original show. Like I said earlier this episode could've easily been two. I think the next episode will suffer the same pacing issues and then with only two episodes left that obviously have to focus on Aku Genndy will get back in the swing of things like how the first two episodes were. This middle section has just had a lot of story beats to juggle and they aren't using their time effectively enough.
>>
>>91970412
I get the impression that the thing they fought isn't aku but some cosmic evil only they could deal with , aku is just something that plopped out of it. Like a really strong monster . He can be killed by the humans so it's best they deal with it, hell they could still be fighting the cloud for all we know and can't be bothered to divide their attention . Other alien races exist too so I can imagine they all might have cloud baby demons to deal with

Mate I know you wont like it, but it really is "Its a 10 episode series" we cant have the seasons and seasons of Jack leaving her to go her own way, having her see the world and its ups and downs, conflicting with her upbringing, re-confronting Jack, questioning everything, doubling down and what she was taught as a child, re-exploring the world, etc etc etc etc.

Season 5 of SJ is best taken as an age-old tale. A tale in the style of the great ancient poems set up to tell this story. Jacks never been a complicated character, and the shows never had complicated characters. Its all in service of the world around it and, again, its story.

Point is, bitch had to be good before the story could end, so they made her figure her shit out within one KINO episode. I still think shes the weakest part of this season, but it bothers me a lot less when i think of these episodes as a complete package that ill marathon from time to time.

>His error was to give in to anger and despair

the gods never told Jack's father that he would be unworthy of the sword if he went berserk or if he gave in to anger and despair. they told him that he was chosen to use a sword forged from his own righteousness. there are no other rules.

so you can see why I think the argument that "the gods took away the sword because Jack threw a fit" is a bit unbelievable in the context of the show and the lore. Jack losing the sword because he let it go is way more believable.

They are the same. But Jack's dad never lost his way.

Just accept that you are wrong. Eerything that has happened in this episode was laid on and established well in advance. there is zero asspull, here.

This isn't a court, here. things can be infered or simply alluded to for them to be acceptable. There is no requirement for everything to be 100% asserted and spelled out to be allowed. Narative can flow on implication and suggestion.

You are basically saying "we didn't have access to an exhaustive rulebook of how the sword work, therefore anything that isn't 100% certain is unacceptable"

show has established the connection of the sword with the gods and how it can have a mind of its own. I EVERYTHING you need to accpet what happened in this episode. with that, you have zero reason to complain.

This is important.

Jack knew why the sword fell. But he lied to himself. He used the chasm as an excuse, that it made the sword physically "lost," and as long as he didn't look for it, he wouldn't have to be faced with the truth.

The very act of searching for the sword is the first step in opening himself up to the truth -- that the sword left him. Only when he does this can he begin the penance process.

THERE IS AREAL EXPLANATION. If you didn't listen to the episode, at least read this thread.

it has already been told (and Jack literally spelt it out in that episode) that the Sword disappeared because Jack lost his way. the sword only came back once he found balance back.

>he still had his mission to kill Aku, shouldn't he be satisfied with saving the future
Jack wanted to save his own and his family. Fuck, the first episode of season 5 literally show him guilting over not being able to save the people of his time.

Just learning that he would never be able to save them must have been terrible.
>. where did this sudden disdain for the future people come up?
What kind of ass are you? Facing the despair you will never be able to save the people you swear o protect doesn't mean disdain for other. People can be desespaired from ime to time, in the face of failure. And Jack was never about that. It's what make him human.

Nigga please. Jack has been saving countless lives through his actions. One moment of killing innocent animals and the evil lying deity saying he destroyed all portals in the universe shouldn't be enough to keep him from finding the only thing that could kill the ultimate evil plaguing the universe.

And this sort of thing has been addressed in the original series with several episodes. Every time jack would get unmotivated or start to lose hope in his quest, he would realize that he's still saving the world even while Aku is still alive.

>>
>>91972391
I think being corrupted by Aku is what allowed the sword to kill them.

Maybe Jack would have been able to cure their alignement by making non lethal strike of the sword, but he was too engulfed by anger to care.

I think it's part of the reason the sword abandoned Jack, as he handled the situation poorly and ended up using the sword to remove live of innocent creatures. It didn't appreciate that.

Jack snapped and entered a 50 year long life of not knowing what to do with himself, being detached or helpful depending on his mood of the moment, and how guilty he felt.

>OH, FUN FACT: we'll never know who the priestess was because she fell off a cliff

Not every villain needs a fucking elaborate backstory. And we already know who she is. She's the High Priestess of an Aku-worshiping cult. She's not a returning character from seasons 1-4 so it's not as if there's some "who is she under the mask?" mystery going on. And if you're upset about the fact that we never learned her name...we never learned the Scotsman's name either. Hell, we've never learned Jack's real name. Such things just aren't very important in this show.
>>
>>91972334
>I want a real explanation, not just "the gods did it"
The sword was literally forged by the gods. Of course they would be the ones to keep the sword if the chosen turned out to have lost his way.
This was Jack's rebirth part of the story. It wasn't a "deus ex machina" just because gods were involved, Jack had to overcome Evil Jack by himself.
>>
>>91972769
so why have her daughters and cult eat up half of the season if they're not that important?

someone else, anyone could have done what Ashi did. a returning character or someone who only shows up for 2 episodes.

First off, the daughters occupied half of an episode, and were the main antagonists of two others. The rest is Jack getting to slowly learn to be nice again through Ashi.

As to why Ashi : Genndy wanted a new character and he made her. She pretty swell and well integrated into the story, as the one who helps Jack while having development of her own.
Genndy doesn't have to bring back an old character you know just because of your nostalgia.

You know what would've fixed it?

Have the sword fall through the time portal after Jack fights the animals and then Aku destroys it.

There, sword stuck in the past, Jack has no way of getting it.
>>
>>91972956
>nothing about her devotion to aku, her past, not even her face or name, anything, being revealed.
Because it doesn't matter. it never did. You're asking the show to linger on unimportant stuff to satisfy your deepest lore desires.
>>
>>91973180
if she really doesn't matter, then why does she even exist or why does she have screentime and plot relevance?
she's the mother of one of the protagonists and her role in the plot is actually quite important, she had kids just to sent them to kill Jack.

and why is lore a bad thing anyway? it's like you're simply satisifed that Jack is getting an ending, even if it turns out to be a shitty one.

>if she really doesn't matter, then why does she even exist or why does she have screentime and plot relevance?
Because she's the main obstacle to Ashi, and the reason why Ashi exists and had a reason for being. She exists relative to Ashi and doesn't need anyhting beyond knowing who she is (Ashi's mother and mentor) and why she does it (she's an aku fanatic who was quite clear about why she worships him) The rest is useless. The kind of stuff you'd see in a spin-off comic that no one would read like STar Wars does so often.

And lore isn't bad, but useless information is. No one gives a shit who she was before she put on the mask (kek) because it doesn't matter.
>>
>>91973227
>if she really doesn't matter, then why does she even exist or why does she have screentime and plot relevance?
She has as much screentime as she needed. She was the one who created Ashi and Ashi rejected her. Anything more would have been filler, especially since Ashi is not even *the* main character.
>>
What annoys me now is that's the whole ticking clock thing they had going with Scaramouche's head bippity-bop-hoppin it's way to Aku with the good news has been thrown right out the window. >Jack doesn't give a shit when he wakes up from his spiritual journey. In fact, he seems happy for her, even if she did just kill a load of people.
>This scene completely ignores the idea that Ashi is technically a companion/student to Jack and that he should at least show a little distaste for killing those soldiers, even if they were aiming to kill HIM.
>Jack doesn't even see Ashi's dead mom.
Im finding this shit harder and harder to just ignore. Every episode just introduces one more odd scenario or strange choice to take the story that just doesn't seem to work. I don't care about Ashi being a main character because that's technically what Genndy wanted anyway, but her rushed transition from foe to friend over the span of 3 episodes really didn't do good for her character, especially seeing as she's become completely different after washing the ash off.
Much as I hate to say this, it feels like Genndy's pulling a semi-Hirsch, where he was grateful enough to tie the series up from where it left off abruptly, but now he's just rushing the story to get it over with.

Having binge watching the earlier seasons before I go to s5, I find the symbolism here to be clever.

I believe the three gods are chosen to be three for one reason: they make up the one true god. I mean, the idea of the holy trinity is that three entities make up God, and some theologians even believe that God says he will create man "in our own image", he isn't talking about He and his angels, but the three entities within him.

Jack can then be seen as an emissary of God on a mission to save his world. In a way, they're even a lot of Jesus comparisons.

He wanders, finds a place, performs miracles, and leaves instilling hope and faith in him as he tries to vanquish the darkness from a world of sin.

I'm not religious btw, just found that to be interesting.

Oh boy, its another "I want to disregard basic textual stuff because I refuse to think about things outside of the most literal context" post.

They have over an hour. That's all the time in the world.
>>
>>91970298
Define 'seriously', because I'm pretty sure what you think it means differs from what it actually means. This isn't fucking Watchmen. It's a slightly more japanese Legend of Zelda with much less time for worldbuilding

>suddenly became good
>not explicitly shown time and time again as doubting teachings, ignoring orders and appreciating nature
>not projecting out words you have been indoctrinated with despite doubting it all
2 Episodes are enough. He had plenty of time to show her around the fucking world and confirm doubts she already had even before meeting him.

I think the only problem of this episode is Ashi fighting the army.
If they used the time with her mother and with the doubts and fear of Ashi, would be way better.
Also, Ashi killing her mother and Jack seeing the body would be good too.

Have you seen a movie complete all of that in less than an hour?
>>

the show forgot this immediately after it happened

Ashi killing her mother by catching and then throwing an arrow (with her bare hands) at her with enough force to alter her trajectory and cause her to jump off the cliff was retarded.

Well, it's possible in SJ universe, so it's fine.
The problem was the execution and meaning of the scene, since it's her mother and it had a major importance in the history, it would be neat if they used the time screen with her.
Maybe she will come back, that's why they made it in that way.

it's so cheap that the gods just gave Jack his sword afer not searching for it in 50 years.

so maybe he did go down that hole during those 50 years and he didn't find the sword, why is Jack jumping to the conclussion that the sword left him? just because he killed some sheep in a fit of rage? Aku destroyed the last portal yeah, believe him why don't you? and he demonized those goats, it's not your fault that you had to kill them, Jack.

and finally, did Jack knew all the time in 50 years that he could have just meditated to talk to the gods and ask for his sword back? did he really have to wait for blue jack to start haunting him?

The priestess was the fucking priestess you fucking idiot, why do you want to know anything more about her? That's all she's meant to be, she doesn't have a fucking secret identity.

Jesus, fuck, you are retarded.

we know Ashi, and we've seen the faces of her sisters. her mother went up a fucking mountain just to finish the job her daughter's couldn't. she even had a big fight with her stranded daughter and went out in a pretty spectacular way.

so why is the priestess less important again?

You could do all but the epilogue in a standard 22 minute period of time. Samurai Jack is a show that lets the visuals do the talking. The fight between Jack and Aku will be about 5-8 minutes, not a full episode. You people are acting like they're gonna have to make time for Jack and Ghost-Scotsman's tea party. Catching up between the two of them will take 30 seconds and it'll probably be played for comedy. There's not much to sort out at all.

Most series-ending fights last a whole episode.
