However the great thing about animation is that you can get away with a lot of things that would normally look ugly or even down right disturbing if it appeared in reality.

The only real way a drawing can be too thick for me is when they a draw a literally obese girl but with a disgustingly thin waist, especially when they keep the fat chin. Otherwise, it just brings up the question at what point does being thick turn into being plain fat?
