Why are Bismuth's so low on the gem caste system when they're seemingly just as strong as quartz's? Are they lower than Rubies?

I don't think the caste system is built around size or physical strength. Also there isn't much to indicate that she's that low on the scale, or even lower than quartzes. She respected and held in regard her quartz and sapphire comrades. She bitched about "uppercrusts" and the caste system oppressing gems and holding them back from what they wanted to do, but I really think she was more pissed at loyalist gems in general than being prejudiced about higher class types.
