Season 2 is great because they take that and flip it on its head. We have been used to this super cheerful and happy go lucky girl and it's pretty interesting to see her just lose some battles and get cucked the whole season.

Okay, thought you were asking "what made it so bad compared to so many other cartoons" but wanted to make sure before I typed a bunch of stuff out. I'd actually say that was the problem, that it didn't feel very different from many other comedy cartoons and didn't seem to have the ambition to change.

In a lot of ways it felt like it would always be a totally episodic cartoon, sticking to a fairly repetitive status quo above everything (Ludo wants the wand but never gets it, Marco can't talk to Jackie, Star fucks up and never learns), and not even making much use of its own premise about a magical princess from another dimension. The Other Exchange Student especially could have come from any show. And when a show doesn't appear to be going anywhere despite a potentially interesting concept and isn't even remarkably weird or funny or unique, it just feels like a totally mediocre cartoon all around.

Of course, to Season 1's credit-- and I do really like Season 1-- the show did change pretty quickly. There were some great episodes and weirder concepts and locations and of course things did change.

But such a weak start that didn't indicate anything more, combined with the slow as hell release schedule in its first few months, seemed to have turned a ton of people off. Basically with the mindset of "I'm an adult, I'm sure kids love this but it's clearly not operating on the same level as Gravity Falls/Steven Universe, and so I can't waste my time on it :^)"

Those complaints seem dumb when by just the 8th episode it showed there'd be a bigger plot. But there were literally 6 months between the premiere of the first and that one, because of the fucked schedule, and so it is kind of understandable why from a dumb cartoon nerd perspective it can feel like NOTHING IS HAPPENING

But I do think Season 1 is good and that it didn't get a fair chance. It just didn't do much early on to challenge initial negative impressions, despite how different it gets by the end

I loved that too. I also loved that, even though I hate love triangles, this one felt fresh. I think it was because Star was actually trying to make Marco happy, and not only that but be friends with Jackie too, instead of trying to sabotage their relationship like in every other show. It was a new take on the love triangle trope and it was nice to have a main character not be a total cunt and selfishly ruin her friend's happiness for the sake of her own for once. Yet despite all that you can tell it's eating her up on the inside and she feels so conflicted over it. It's a much more realistic take on the situation. A+ writing.

Moon's army seems to regularly fight monsters. There are flying eyes, spying on monsters. Yet, Moon can have polite conversations with them and Dennis even treats her as his queen.

Mewnipendence Day is just a yearly thing on one specific day and the eyes were apparently just supposed to just figuratively represent the royal family's power (Toffee was actually the one who rigged one to spy on Star), so it's not exactly constant surveillance. I guess for a real-world comparison you could point to, I don't even know, dressing up in blackface for Halloween or some shit and being like "what, it's just a holiday, man, don't take it seriously"

Star at least was shown to have extreme views apparently even for her society, and seems to get that from River who goes out to beat up monsters without Moon's knowledge on the reg.

I get the impression Moon's army just fights off monster invasions, and that Moon herself has decent relations with the more respected monsters. Ex. since Ludo's family is monster royalty, they're some of the "good" ones or whatever.

Generally some monsters probably have it way better off than others, Avarius family we know for sure does, while all are still second-class citizens (except not really citizens either) to some extent. Just for some groups it wouldn't matter.

I don't think all monsters live in poverty or anything for that reason. Some do for sure but the same can be said for Mewmans. I just don't think it's exactly a case of them being regularly oppressed/killed anymore, especially since going by the number of Princess Songs we saw on a wall in Face the Music the Massacre would've been over, like, 12 or 15 generations ago (forgot how many there were but we didn't see them all).

Basically it's not a good life but it's not as dire as Mewnipendence Day sort of made it look when that was all we knew. Star's overprivileged and started shit with them just because she could, which would have some pretty bad real-world analogues but yeah
