I wouldn't say that the show is pretentious in any way; the show's humor goes out of its way to be unpretentious, and the emotional stuff always feels grounded and realistic. But season 6 episodes like The Mountain, Walnuts and Rain, Graybles 1000+, and You Forgot Your Floaties really went off the deep end (in a good way) in terms of how experimental they were. It was balanced out by more straightforward episodes, but something like Floaties might be one of the most bizarre things I've seen that aired on television (American television, at least).

Both of those teases were basically just reiterating that Finn is friends with them two. He sounded pretty honest when he was talking about his relationship with FP and with Bubblegum the only not fiery part of the flashback was when they were hanging out as friends.

Haven't watched AT since the decline in quality towards season 5/6. Some friends have told me about the past few arcs and how they have been great. Is it worth getting back into? If so why?

I think it got an upstart since then but I'm not sure that's enough to interest you if you already dropped it.

You could at least try out the miniseries the show's done if the concept of AT tackling arcs for an extended period is interesting to you.

I dropped around the same time, and decided to give it another chance after hearing good things about the recent episodes. I can safely say I've enjoyed every S7 and S8 episode so far. It's all very solid, funny, and makes me super nostalgic for S3/S4-era AT. They've reached a nice balance of comedy, adventure, and emotions.

Season 7 was a really fun season I thought, and it reminded me of the earlier seasons in some ways. It also strikes a nice balance if you felt that season 5 and 6 got a little too experimental. Season 8 has been pretty much non-stop continuity if that appeals to you.

Opinions vary, so I can't predict if you'll enjoy it or not, but I reckon it's worth getting back into. There's probably a guide out there somewhere if you don't want to go through every episode.

I wish we got to see more of these four hanging out, because presumably they do. I love and hate how AT makes you fill in the blanks yourself. Like that one scene in Hall of Egress where PB and Finn are reading together, I like to think they do that fairly regularly too.

Yeah, I always wish they could do more communal things too.
I also feel like AT has you fill in things yourself, though I don't know if that's intentional or just that really big fans find interesting stuff to wonder about.

Something I like to think about is how there's lots of little bits of info throughout the show implying Finn and Jake scavenge material from places to fix up their Treefort so it makes me think that they're pretty skilled handymen/construction workers, there was even a cute official comic about Finn building little things for folks as a hobby.

I think it is intentional. Every episode feels like a small peek into a living, breathing world. Here's a insightful quote from Jesse Moynihan:

"It’s interesting to me how Adventure Time’s character arcs happen on their own time, rather than in a direct, continuous line. I think this is because all the pieces are falling all over the place, and you have to wait and see how they land. Then you gage where your ideas maybe fit in that landscape. It can take a long time to get an idea through at the moment where it’ll work harmoniously with everything else that’s going on. The philosophy of Adventure Time I feel, is that life is moving along without a “story”. Life is just life. The story part is the pieces that viewers put together. I don’t know if that’s a perfect description but maybe it’s a loose template for how our story threads work."

Probably talking about Frost and Fire. No, nothing quite like that happens again, but "fast and loose" was a character flaw that was introduced in season 4. Finn seems like he's gotten over it after the events of season 6.

As for romance, Finn hasn't had a steady relationship since he broke up with FP. In season 6 he dated a lot (a lot) of girls as an attempt to not be so depressed, but it didn't work. What did work was an epiphany that helping people is what he really loves. This leads to him trying to help Huntress Wizard, who both develop mutual feelings.

I won't debate if it was as good as Mortal Folly/Recoil, The Lich, or Billy's Bucket List, but was it really so bad? In a vacuum it's pretty crazy, but it's greatest sin is probably failure to live up to the hype.

No, it wasn't. I especially liked the resolution with his dad, but it still lacked a certain Je ne sais quoi.

I think the biggest issue is Orgarlog never felt like a real menace.

Parts of it were cool but overall it fell way flat to me.
Comet was neat but I don't understand why it only existed to give Finn a pep talk before going for his dad instead, Orgalorg was a jobber, very little changed aside from Martin leaving, none of it made much sense to me. I definitely think it's the worst 'big' finale the show's had, I didn't like season 7's that much either but at least it was leading into interesting stuff while the comet was an uninteresting conclusion to stuff I didn't even know the show wanted to conclude.

Also the more they push that mystical bullshit onto Finn's character the more annoyed I get, it's destroying the beautiful simplicity of him being a hero because he feels it's the right thing to do vs him being part of some bajillion year old cosmic plot or whatever the fuck.

I feel like Orgalorg's laid back nature was a joke that didn't quite land. But if you take a step back he/she/it is actually pretty interesting. It's unfortunate that Hoots was a better introduction to the character, even though the episode Orgalorg was incredibly eerie.

I wonder what they would hsve done with him in season 5? He/she/it was originally the main antagonist in the mid-season tv movie that turned into Something Big. I guess the battle would have juat been a distraction while Gunther stole the rocket.

I think during season 6 he had his head a bit too far up his own ass, but overall he's been one of the best writers on the show, alongside Sucrose and Tom Herpich imho.
