TES is a perfect example, they basically took basic Tolkien based fantasy and made something great a unique out of it.
Bloodborne took Lovecraft and created something similar to it but it felt more like a well crafted love letter than a rip off.

Discipline, like drawing ability, or any ability really, is a skill. Which means that it's work.

Sometimes I skip out on doing certain work whether it's because of my own insecurity or whether I'm just downright lazy. (it's usually a combination for me). I still feel bad about this when it happens, I think that feeling will never really go away. However, knowing that it's a skill helps.

It does take work even to just make time for whatever you want to work on, after all.

Graham has very little control over the lesser thralls honestly unless they're fairly close to him, he has an influence over the Perfects though, the Perfects act as the brains and the thralls the body parts. Perfects retain some hint of their former personalities (a perfect is basically one control brain, general people who Graham trusted and respected, and dozens of slave brains) but ultimately Graham's control over them is absolute, the problem is without Graham or the broadcast station they went completely dark, they still retain some autonomy and even now might still be woken by some large event (power being restored in an entire city, a large gunfight happening within earshot) but if they are they will often just wander around aimlessly with their thralls within the city and attack scavengers, proving how truly reliant they were on Grahams control.

Also, the whole idea basically started as "what if we took a standard fantasy world, only the twist was it was our world after an apocalypse, with modern humans being the common ancient and advanced Elven civilization all these worlds seem to have?" The world started off pretty simple like that, all the lore and politics were build around it without trying to change the core concept, so that's why we get elves and satyrs and shit. This is not perfectly refined mental fantasy, if I were to try to adapt it into a book or whatever I probably would ditch a lot of concepts and races and try to make the world a little more consistent.

Any creator concerned with denying the source of their inspiration is simply attempting to appear intelligent or falsely present themselves as the leader of some creative hierarchy. When a successful person makes something, it's because they desire the thing to be made. They create a creation because they want it to be created. A person who revolves the act of creation around appearing to have no ingredients is merely trying to take total selfish ownership of their project, for the sake of ego, and the work will suffer either by its author's denial of their own inspiration, or by the author's irrational attempts to sever the work from any meaning outside of its self. Either way it is an arrogant denial to claim your work is not derivative. I think the modern epidemic of worrying about originality is caused by falsely carrying over the fear of being failed by your schoolteacher for borrowing answers on homework or a test.

Stealing IS being creative. The line you're thinking about is the legal one about copyright. Before the days of recorded media, people used to tell the same popular tales, but they'd naturally spin it in their own way.

Basically, even fan-fiction is creative. You could say that it's relatively lazy because they're using other peoples' characters/worlds, but that doesn't mean it's not creative. It just takes work to push something to be more unique, so as long as you keep pushing, you'll probably eventually come up with something you can call your own.
