For Zim and Gaz, I love how similar they are.
Both characters are highly competitive and never backs down from something going wrong.
Both have a more calculating and sinister side to them when pushed too far that no one should fuck with.
Both love to eat snacks, plays video games, pretty smart when it come to science related stuff and prefers to be loners by choice.

Oh, and Jhonen said that Zim's favorite color is purple and were going to team up in the unfinished movie. Even from a non-shipping point of view, I could still see Gaz becoming a friend to Zim before Dib could.

I'm not usually a raging waifu-fag or an obsessed tumblrina-tier shipper, but some characters I feel suffer enough that they need a reason to Go on in their lives, and Dib is definitely one of those kinds of characters. I mean seriously, not only is he a Pariah in society, but even his own sister is loathe to be around him, and not just in the semi-teasing Ben-and-Gwen way that Siblings and Cousin's of the opposite gender usually are, but that's she actually dislikes being around him and spending time with him. Much like Zim, Dib's past actions pretty much lead to him becoming an outcast and he's completely oblivious to the fact. The "Rubber Piggy" showed that he's been harassing and bothering his fellow students with his paranormal obsessions as a young child while at the same time calling his sister's interests and hobbies dumb and a waste of time.

I'm aware, the Zim fandom was always an enigma. I watched the show when I was 6 and found the fandom a few years after and never understood why anyone did anything outside of making funny gifs from the show. Making fan Irkens and shipping were really strange because it didn't feel like a show that was hospitable to either of those things - everything in the show is jokes and meanness and futility, a successful Irken was always just a sight gag and the concept of love just didn't seem to exist. ESPECIALLY with Gaz. Her whole character is vitriol and disdain and aloofness. Shipping her is effectively rewriting her character past recognizability.

You know, it's funny. If not for Dib's idealistic devotion to humanity (which is dwindling enough as-is) you might think in his constant bouts with Zim he was almost trying to get himself killed.

In any case, I agree. Dib needs someone to lean on, and Tak was really the only character to give him so much as the benefit of the doubt. It's especially significant when you realize that Tak had absolutely nothing to gain from their interactions; Befriending Dib was of no consequence to her mission, but she still made the effort. Perhaps, for a time, she felt a fleeting sense of kinship for the Earth boy.

They are rather alike, when you think about it: Both are remarkably talented, resourceful and self-motivated, but are sadly overlooked due to the inflexibility of their respective societies. Tak's need for recognition from the Tallest and an empire that abandoned her parallels Dib's desire to impress an uninterested parent and an equally unforgiving world of ignorance.

If they ever met again, no doubt there would be some open hostility between them. She did lie to him, after all, and he did throw a wrench in her plans. But I could see them working with together in a fragile alliance against Zim; one keeping a gun to the other, but gradually softening as they bond over their repeated victories and failures. Maybe even learning something more about themselves, in the process...

But more to the point, there is a reservoir of untapped potential for these two and it's a tragedy for it to have gone ignored for so long. I've been shipping them since 2006.
