Episode 1 was framed in a way that implies Jack's been at that stage, using those weapons and armor and bike and aimlessly roaming to protect people without really having his heart in it anymore, for at least a couple decades.

The scenes of him in Episode 1 are juxtaposed with the ENTIRE process of the Daughters of Aku being sent after him: from literal birth until the end of their training. Jack had been doing that for longer than Ashi and her sisters had been alive, and they're at least 18.

When Jack's shit gets stripped from him in Episode 2 in the space of minutes, it's to show that these 7 mean fucking BUSINESS because they're the first people that he's had trouble with since losing his sword, aka in the last 20-40 years (depending on when he lost it, it's unclear right now). Plus, this is right after the "best beetlebot ever" gets one-shotted without Jack even raising an eyebrow.

I didn't even realize all of that until a rewatch, but man after seeing what he did there I was so impressed. Genndy's still got it.

Actually I like this idea. Jack wants to help people despite his failures, but he doesn't want the people he saves to recognize him as Samurai Jack because it reminds him of his failure to return to the past since Jack is commonly known as the samurai warrior who seeks to undo the evil that is Aku.
For example, when he refuses to aid the village Scaramouche has attacked is after he's had his mask torn. Perhaps he's afraid of them seeing him and he just flat out prefers not to help at all rather than helping as Samurai Jack.
It's far fetched, but I think it's interesting.

It was, but the direction of having the episode cut between them gives the impression that he's been doing this a long time. Genndy gets across that this has been Jack's life for a long time now without spending more than episode showing you that status quo, and thus when it's stripped from him in Season 2 it still feels impactful.

Granted, I think the reason he's spending so much time nearly naked is because I think he's going to get some badass final costume for the big fight with Aku.

The physical mask is a visual metaphor for the psychological mask, you hyper-literal tards. Just as Jack's relative nakedness (in battle) was a metaphor for his purity and honesty. I wouldn't think this would be so hard to understand.
