Ascension: Start it off I was really unimpressed by Vince staples feature on the track with a poor use of repetition given the previously impressive use of that teqniue with songs like Dare and M1 A1b

Strobelite: Just poor mixing, I was fin with the feature but like most of the album it mixed really poorly in that it wasn't all that complex with its layers just really busy

Saturnz Barz: Their take on dub here just seems mediocre compared to their previous remix album Laika come home

Momentz: I love some de la soul but this track was very lacking in background instrumentation, some interesting voice work but it seemed fairly flawed in the mixing.

Submission: Danny brown wasn't up to snuff which is just awful given I'm also a long time fan of his and this sounded more like his XXX or mix tape work than his last album. Also this one I found as great example of Damon phoning it in. Not much to say about the first half with the singing other than the instrumentation was boring, the background vocals though I'd say we're the most interesting part of the whole album so there's that

Andromeda: Sounds like a song off of Damon's everyday robots with a really boring beat put on top, which I wasn't a fan of that solo project either, given that his normally dreamier style just comes off as bored in this album

Busted and Blue: I loved the intro, and it's somewhat interesting instrumentally, but the backup singing is pretty bad, didn't feel like it had a place. Repeat complaint that Damon wasn't on it.

Carnival: great feature, mixing seemed really bad though, wasn't a fan of the electric stuttering effect. Very busy but not nearly as interesting as their previous projects

Let me out: Hey Pusha T, maybe next time don't just sound like fucking Kanye you hack. I wasn't too interesting in the Mavis staples feature but the Damon performance was better.

I loved She's My Collar. If it had a music video, I would like Noodle to be singing it even though I unfortunately doubt it.

In lore, they basically break up after every album as the powers Murdoc cut a deal with when he was a kid try to kill them all. Mostly focusing on him and Noodle.

2D tries to go back to society but a lifetime of damage from Murdoc has fucked him up too bad to, Russel does the same but becomes damaged more by the world as he nears the point that 2D is at, Murdoc usually goes to prison somewhere hellish and cuts deals with the criminal underworld to get out of the situation, and Noodle has adventures dealing with the leftover bullshit from Murdoc's last mess and maintains her shit unlike the others.

Then Murdoc escapes his situation with highly illegal acts culminating in forcinly abducting 2D because the pact keeps his life good when music is being made. He finds a new studio, Russel heads to rejoin them, and Noodle just shows up out of nowhere to make the album actually happen.

Rinse/repeat until either Murdoc dies and the dark forces claim his soul or Noodle dies and the music/magic with her.

So every album is a comeback.

Unless you mean meta. Because Jamie and Damon are always fighting and putting out statements that aren't true.

I hazard a guess that unfortunately most people found gorillaz through Feel Good inc. and cemented an idea in their head that the band will always have one particular sound that was present on Demon days. Believing any sidesteps are objective downgrades, which is a shame.

I'd prefer if gorillaz continues to do something else with every album but I would be interested in hearing newer artists who are in love with Demon Days to style a sound after that album. The same mood produced by another individual could give the pseudo purists something to chase after and the rest of us can continue todiscuss new releases by the gorillaz on their own merit.

Man, I fucking love Gorillaz, Demon Days was great all the way through and Plastic Beach had a very enjoyable amount of variety. The Fall definitely went one hard direction but I still found ithe songs great and relaxing, Hillbilly Man even being my favorite. And every other album is more littered with goods than bads in my eyes, I overall can say I enjoyed every album, not a single one failed to satsisfy. But Humanz was disappointing.

As much as Gorillaz is noteworthy for their great amount of genre diversity, there's always been this consistent atmosphere and vibe to every album. They all had personality and I could feel the characters behind the music. But this album is void of that. Damon/2D takes the backseat with vocals and I just don't feel the connection to the band with all these strangers taking over for the majority of the album.

With Plastic Beach, it had gems like Rhinestone Eyes, Broken, Melancholy Hill and To Binge that let me appreciate the more deviating songs like Stylo or White Flag, everything felt perfectly fit in the album, even less desirable songs like Sweepstakes. Humanz simply lost it all with its suffocating features and overwhelming pop direction. People are right when they say "It doesn't feel like Gorillaz." And as much as I love these guys, it hurts to say it really doesn't. All in all just my opinion.

Andromeda, Let Me Out and Apprentice were the absolute best of the album. Maybe I gotta give it a few more listens. I don't wanna be disappointed in my favorite artists' latest album, that just makes me feel like shit for how immensely hype I was.

I was more under the impression Gorillaz was done by Russel. There's a good dose of Del and drumming which is his thing, plus Clint Eastwood which was the crown of the entire album which is where Del surfaces the hardest.

They were much less hip hop as any of their many styles, like rock, electronic, alternative, etc, they were never so exclusively and thoroughly one style as they are in this album and it's shit for it.
Compare the Clint Eastwood to say Ascension in Clint Eastwood the rap fits the song and style of the Gorillaz whereas it's the opposite now, they've rescinded themselves to merely being an avenue for the guest rappers, they took a huge backstep with their own sound.
