I could see movie/show skins working like the premier skins where you select them from the shader menu and they just cover up the gear. That's how it would have to work for the show ones at least since they're probably using the likenesses and voices of the actors and it would be weird to change that through gear pieces.

It always bothers me when fighting games remove characters between iterations in all honesty. Especially nowadays as they usually just end up being DLC that really makes them feel like Cut Content. It can be ok if they are replaced by a character with a similar fighting style or moveset, or if 90% of the cast are replaced.

I guess I'm just surprised by just how many cuts there seem to be in this one. And the Joker certainly shows that dying isn't a good enough reason to be cut.

He's made to look more gaunt and and decrepit than the normal. But look at nearly any comic book variation of him as well. They take the same basic design and tweak it to their own view of what the Joker is.

Things like Leto and Injustice 2 Joker ignore where the character comes from and create an entirely new character. You're the same kind of faggots who would defend TDKR Bane because IT'S DIFFERENT.

But it's fucking lazy is what it is. It's a hack writer who can't come up with something original and compelling so they use the name and selling power of an existing and popular character to push something more marketable to whatever dominant demographic they want at the time.

Hence the modern Joker and Harley are hyper stylized hipster versions of the characters that appeal to high school kids but aren't really Joker and Harley anymore.

It's hilarious that people will riot of Superman losing his undies but they fundamentally change characters like Joker and Harley and the contrarions have to come out and say IT'S DIFFERENT LEAVE IT ALONE.

Furthermore, consider what Warner tried to pull with the PC release of MKX. "Oh, what's that? You bought the full game AND paid for the season passes? Well, we're not gonna give you the second season of DLC. It's too much work." It took almost a year of internal bitching, boycotts, and the Netherrealm boys doing the work themselves for that to happen.

I don't think Capcom makes the effort to "understand" their source material so I think it's a bit of a moot point. It's generally just plugging in templates for them no real variation or huge fanservice and attention to detail.

NRS on the other hand kinda have their own way with the characters a bit (Look at this garbo ass Joker we got) but they also really go to the extra mile when it comes to all the research and fanservice they do for the characters.
