I didn't really understand that film very well because there's no subs Satan, but the idea of Don Andres finding a partner was quite sweet. Not quite sure how they'd incorporate that into the show though, it might fuck with the character dynamics a bit.

There are four movies. I don't think anyone thinks they're subjectively good but I still enjoyed them for what they were. YMMV, but they definitely improve from one to the next. Certainly the animation in the latest one, Chupacabras, was really nice.

Also the movies are on a different timeline from the series, so while they follow similar legendary monster hunting storylines and the characters are more or less the same (in personality, but not backstories) the two don't tie in.

I'd say it's because Xochitl is the mellow, kind and caring girl. Teo is feisty and a bit over the top and Marcella is straightforward and competent, but it's an archetype missing from the Netflix show that appeals to some people.

Xochitl is also the closest to being Teo's main love interest in the movies, or at least the one he shows the most interest in. But then in the movies Teo is like Bond with a new girl every film. Pic related is from the credits of Momias after he'd kissed another girl. Teo is also quite jealous in the movies but it's not really played as a romance thing, more like she just doesn't like anyone else getting attention.

The budget is meaningless, the problem with the movies is that Televisa really loves executive meddling and sucking out the funds from animated movies that fall within their production.

The series never blantly states they see each other more than friends. Leo probably never considered the possibility because, for all he knew, Teodora was a ghost. And Teo had the whole thing of be sure Leo saves the world. The most the series states is they care a lot to each other.

I like 3nd and 4th Moviedora best, Mega Satan. She's a bit more histrionic and comical than Netflixdora but that makes me smile. And I like her frilly clothes, her big poofy hair and I think her face is really cute (which I know is not a commonly held opinion round here). I do understand why her design isn't to everyone's taste and that most people prefer Netflixdora - She does have a cool design and is still recognisably the same character, but she's just not quite as lovable to me.

One of her titles is "Niña de La Condesa" (Daughter of The Condess). The Condess/La Condesa is a very well-known bohemian neighborhood in Mexico City that not many outsiders are aware of. I'm pretty sure the other titles are referencing something too but I wouldn't know because I didn't spend that long of a time in Mexico City.

I personally didn't enjoy them because at one point the references got so obscure that not even I could get them (it seems this is a consensus among people outside of Mexico City), it was like watching a class project made by that one super tight-knit clique in the class that has a million inside jokes.

I agree it's cool when non-US media has a lot of the culture's "flavor", but eventually the references and modisms become too much that they start to alienate outsiders. This was a problem with our dubs for a while, actually. Eventually shows had too much Mexican slang that other Latin American countries complained about not understanding what the fuck characters were saying.

People talk a lot of shit about Mexico but I think you've got a fascinating culture over there. The way the Spanish and indigenous cultures and beliefs have intermixed and resulted in things like Día de Muertos and Santa Muerte, and where a few of the native peoples and languages are well... still alive and still part of society, unlike say the US. As you've alluded to, it also seems like it's a very different place from one area to another. I would quite like to visit one day, but flights from Europe are very pricey and with such a big country, I really wouldn't know where to start. /blogposting

I guess in terms of media, things like slang and references and in-jokes are less of a problem if you're only interested in appealing to your own domestic audience, as it seems the movies are (or perhaps were before the Netflix show). If you're trying to attract a global audience yeah, that can be a problem - This is probably one of the reasons the Americans often remake our British shows for their own audiences as well, because they'll struggle with some strong accents and references, and sometimes the humour can be too dry or subtle for US networks to get (not necessarily audiences, just dumb execs who think the audience is similarly dumb).

It's very common to just start talking to some stranger and end up becoming friends. I mean, there's a lot of assholes here, but those are everywhere, right?

Yeah, the movies where mostly just to appeal to Mexicans, but as someone who isn't from Puebla or all those Center states, even I was alienated sometimes. That's how different each region here can get, honestly.

I thought Santa Muerte was a older tradition than that, but I know it has seemingly become linked with the whole drugs situation - La Catrina is certainly an interesting one too though, Hell all the ancient Mesoamerican stuff is as well. I think one of the reasons I like Las Leyendas is that they're making use a lot of myths and legends that don't really get used in popular culture much.

That does sound quite refreshing. The only strangers who talk to you in my grey Bongland city are tramps who want to bum a cigarette or some change. We're really not the most open of people unless we're drunk and then it's a 50/50 toss up of whether someone will want to be your friend or hit you.
