Thing is, I don't know if they have people working for them anymore that are even capable of that. Look at this issue right here. It's the one they were so proud of that they hyped it up in the solicits specially, and it's... it's okay I guess. Barely. She fights a million nondescript ninjas, and the art uses those little extreme closeup micro-panels as a cheat so that they don't have to actually show where anybody is in relation to anybody. It's just martial noise.

And they're so proud of it. Like this is the best they can do.

I suppose it's good that they're using her, I mean that's gotta be an upgrade from a company-wide editorial ban (don't think I've forgotten about that, DC), but I don't think they're going to have a single actual GOOD comic with her in the next 10 years. These people don't have it in them. They need real talent. I just hope they manage to get some in my lifetime.

Seconded. Hell, look at the big turning point for Cass here. A ballerina tells her a story and then tells her straight-up what she has to do and how he has to feel about it. There's barely any real sense of self-discovery for Cass in this scene. She's literally told everything she needs, in both metaphorical and literal terms, by a practically magical dancer. And all the ninja she fought are totally not dead, just banged up a bit. And in the end she's "not alone".
It's all the most bog-standard storytelling possible, and the one thing this whole issue could be halfway proud of, its art, is severely undermined by being about six pages of fight to 14 pages of bland, blunt, boring nothingness.

Gates of Gotham was much better. Also you're talking about a period of time where she was mostly outright banned from being used. I think Tynion's Cass has been on the same level of bad as Beechen's, for the exact same reason: she's written as a different character. So Takara's art for this arc is making me not dislike the Orphan costume as much I used to. The white eyes may have a bit to do with it. Wouldn't mind if future artists working on Tec kept that element (if Cass doesn't end up getting a new costume that is).

However I still would like Cass to get a new costume, hopefully by the end of this arc. And preferably one with bat ears and a cape.

Also, note that her mother got it at some local bookstore back in Detroit, which is where Gabrych said the Wu-San sisters came from in his run. Matter of fact, the whole children's story aspect of it reminds me a lot of the fairy tale reveal of Shiva's past in Gabrych's run, the whole "once upon a time there were two sisters." It was more jealousy which is a quick easy Damian-trait. But also a need to impress her too. The first time he see's her unlike Dick or Tim, Damian is the one who purposely looks back at Cass when they talk about the explosives.

Again, he's also the one who trying to disarm the bomb when they find one in the next issue and Cassandra knows they have 0 time for it with the way it's setup. So she takes him and run.

The other thing is he can see she heavily favors Tim, which irks him probably even more. Of all the gals he'd think would instantly bond with, she and freaking Tim share something he wishes he had.

So I never read Tomasi's Batman run and had to look up who Nobody is. There's two Nobodys: Morgan and Maya. Which one are you referring to as being as a fill-in for Cassandra?

A.) He was one of the editors on Robin for a certain story arc called, OYL .

B.) Nightwing, Outsiders, and Batman & Robin. Zero appearances of Cassandra. Not even a mention of her in Outsiders when the comic was rebranded originally to Batman & the Outsiders. Ironically, Dan Didio mentioned her in the final issue of that run when he took over the comic.

C.) THE WHOLE FAMILY. So during Batgirl Vol. 2 after a wink wink nudge nudge moment of said writer of that comic calling out other Bat Book writers for not putting Cassandra as a guest star and then later on having Bruce adopt her. Tomasi in Nightwing that same month (cause RIP continuity was all over the place). Dick, Alfred, Tim, and Damian were watching a movie calling it THE ENTIRE FAMILY. Later on, Tomasi carried on that said plot point in Batman & Robin when Bruce returned. Now to be fair, he included Jason during the New 52 (even if Bruce acted even a dick to Jason during the "grief" arc that had him). Still, Tomasi acknowledged Jason.

D.) Advice Kurt Busiek once told me on creators who aren't fond of recurring characters or villains. The creator will either A.) will replace the character with what they deem as a better version or B.) Just not write the character AT ALL.

So... now look at Nobody aka Maya. Now Rich the leech the instant she appeared confused her with Cassandra (because Snyder said you'd be hearing news SOON on Cassandra and Rich as always jumped the gun). It's obvious Gleason was building off bits of what Tomasi had left him for Damian. Basically a contemporary.

Yeah, I had a discussion with him on another site many years ago, and I can't bring myself to hate him because his heart's in the right place. He just made all the wrong decisions. Like he thought resolving her language issue off-panel was improving the character because he thought it was cruel that Bruce never helped her learn to read. I talked to Tynion over the weekend at C2E2. The man truly has a passion for Tim, Stephanie, Jean Paul, and Cassandra. I could see it in his eyes the way he passionately talked to me about these characters.

Then we talked about the later and the various plot threads he wanted to do here, but couldn't cause his editors were like, "James. You can't do that. You're being too on the nose." with something in the previous issue or here with this one they said to him "James. You can't do that. You have to be more on the nose."

So I get that he goes follows his editors and works that middle ground ala what Dixon did. In the end, his best moments aren't the stories. It's the small moments these characters have with one another.

Seriously, we read this story for the next based Basil moment. The next moment Bruce shows some humanity. Cassandra being Cassandra. Tim being Tim. etc. etc.

That's where he's at his strongest. Why this is probably the second best arc to come from this series since Rebrith. Still, the opening arc is #1 in my book. But this one come's close. Then again, after the X-Over, Villains Syndicate, and the Batwoman two-parter. There really isn't anything else yet.

But I am pumped as heck for the next arc with Jean Paul, Luke, and Zatanna. Plus he's doing such a better job with the General than what Fabian did with the character.

His petty hatred of Cass led to a bizarre situation where there was a period of almost a year, when a character who was not only a member of the team, but ostensibly in CHARGE of it, did not appear in the comic.
