DC always thought it had great potential because both characters are great icons and share a lot of superficial similarities that are easy to market as an unit. They had been playing with the concepts for years here and there and the reboot gave them a excuse to go all out with it. Not only in comics, but through various media.

The fact that it didn't pan out took them completely by surprise.

Jim Lee, actually. There are interviews before and after the reboot where he talks about the pairing and how great it would be to explore it due to the characters iconography. Of course i think WB., at least Diane Nelson, bought the idea thinking of the merchandising potential because after the Nu52 it was everywhere. Animated movies, games, recent cartoon that was produced way back then.

We know Johns is a dirty BM/WW shipper, of course, and Didio doesn't seem to push these kind of things.

I kind of get why Johns wanted that. Because of Perez, Wonder Woman didn't have an OTP. Trevor was married off to another woman. Meanwhile Bruce rarely really has one. It was only recently that he and Selena had more than flirtations in the main universe. And hell, at that time Talia was full over the top Snidely Whiplash evil. Add on that the JL/U toon era worked that pairing up relatively well, it seems workable enough.

I'm not saying I agree, I'm saying I get it.

Considering Rebirth is still a work in progress, don't think too hard about it until the two year mark. This whole shebang is a two year arc. We're not even halfway through.

Brubaker and Loeb were setting Bruce and Selina as a couple than Johns in the JLA last arcs used Identity Crisis as a springboard to reveal that Catwoman was only being nice because she was mindwiped to be, which Batman distrust her again and Catwoman go full edgy to rebel the programming.

Then in New52 you had the Detective Comics writers setting Bruce and Selina as a couple again until Johns came out with Forever Evil where Catwoman gets jealous about Batman having an emotional connection with Wonder Woman and go once again full edgy to rebel against her spurned love.

More like they're symbolic of his classic characterization, which seems to be back. They're also symbolic of an earlier age in comics where things didn't have to be serious all the time. Sometimes weird goofy shit happens, and you roll with it. Because it's fun. Things didn't used to have to be super serial and explained and serious and so forth. It's also a connection to comic books long and varied history, a thing which many editor and company heads today seem to very much want to flat out ignore. Fans genuinely like the long goofy histories. We shit on them too, but for the most part we want them there. Tweaked or streamlined, but none of this baby with the bathwater stuff.
