Adult Swim is funding two new 6 episode seasons of FLCL. Expected release 2018.

This week we started the dub premiere of Attack on Titan S2. Expectations were high, and it disappointed bigtime. To start, Jack didn't let us down, and yet again was the highest rated non sport show on Saturday. But the good stops there. AoT, which is a dub premiere and only a few weeks behind Japan, pulled the same numbers Jojo was. And as you can expect, the rest of the night did poorly as well. I hope they didn't pay a lot for it.

Why are people surprised a show at 12:00 AM has less than a million viewers? I bet Jack would pull half a million more viewers if it was aired an hour early (and wasn't up against some popular show)

It's nighttime, people go to sleep.

Demarco can you please fuck off? Getting millions into 1-1:30 used to be business as usual. Now we can't even get a show at 11:30 over a million. A dub premiere of an allegedly popular series shouldn't being having these issues
>>
So the moral of the story is to quickly capitalize on the popularity of a flavor-of-the-month anime and not just make a 12-episode sequel series three years after the original?

Now I'm scared to see how OPM season 2 will fare.

2:00 AM Naruto Shippuden 852,000
2:30 AM One Piece 756,000
3:00 AM Parasyte -the maxim- 659,000

i can't find these on programming insider under the toonami tag, but they're on the wiki so meh
>>
>>91850840

Why is Jojo doing so badly?
>>
>>91852112
it wasn't, the block itself is dying because of the lead in being weakened with jack (since family guy repeats do much better than it at 11PM) and the super repeat (same deal) and followed by decades old dragon ball

they need to wrap jack up asap and get family guy back, get rid of the 8 PM super premiere and move that to midnight as the sole premiere slot for it, and move buu kai to the repeat slot

then we might get back to last year's levels
>>
>>91852112
Being that it exists online at the click of a button probably doesn't help. Jack and Dandy are premieres, Jojo is just tv syndication catching up with what's already released.

>>91851995
I'm very fond of One Piece, but I accept that it will always be destined as the long runner chugging along in the background. Toei have dragged the content out so long from intro song, introduction, recap, and moving stills you could probably describe the actual content of a new episode in one breath.
>>
>>91852219
Jack is literally the only thing a huge chunk of people are tuning in for. Its the furthest thing from the problem.

And you know damn well they can't drop 8pm Super. That's what everyone gets for requesting literal children's anime
>>
>>91852112
Normies had to learn the hard way most of the memes don't come from p1+p2
>>
>>91852361
if it's the only thing people are tuning in for and it's not doing as well as family guy repeats then it's definitely dragging the block down since there's some consistency in holdover from those

if they can't drop 8pm super then drop it from toonami, it's just an albatross at this point since it won't ever do as well as kai usee to nor as well as any decent premiere would if it wasn't being dragged down by jack and the dragon ball power hour

On a minor bit of news, Adult Swim just got the rights to Big O season 1 back for the first time in years (they have perpetual rights to season 2, but not to season 1). The Toonami stream did a full marathon of it yesterday.

So that may show up in the rerun slot at some point.

The problem is that the wait for season 2 was such that anyone that invested in Attack on Titan was going to read the manga. . Especially since this whole season is only gonna be 12 episodes and there's no way ANY questions will get answered in those 12 unless they skip about 30 chapters worth of material.

AoT has a long fairly continuity heavy narrative that forces you to strike while the iron is hot and keep audiences in their seats. Compare this to OPM which is essentially a gag series where you can run the same joke whenever, or Jojo where each season is essentially its own new story, and it's not really the same.

If I had to pick a culprit though I'd pick the hour of DBZ. The dropoff really started with that, it seems, even if the show itself does okay

AoT was popular like four years ago.The long wait between seasons tanked its popularity.

AoT's production staff fucked the franchise over by sitting on their asses for four years. You'd think after all that time they could deliver more than a 12 episode season.
>>
>>91854622
Without normalfags Toonami wouldn't exist. Appealing to normalfags is its entire purpose.

Between torrents, fansubs and Crunchyroll, hardcore animu nerds have already seen every show on Toonami that they're interested in. They're not the audience.

Anyone feel like just tuning out halfway through? I was ok until the hour of edge. That and everything after felt like a slog to get through. The only show I stick around for is GitS which means I have to sit through to the end. Super was boring as hell. As soon as Jack and GitS are done, I think I'm just gonna hand it up on Toonami. I was gonna stick around for JoJo Pt.3 but I can just watch it online (and watch the subs like some dirty weeb). Also, what is the purpose of airing Super at 8 and 11:30? If they already air Super at 8, why waste the premium airtime after Jack on a rerun instead of putting on?
>>91854024
It likely wasn't going to do well to begin with for the reasons alluded to here>>91853528
Any remotely interested fan of S1 either read the manga or dropped and forgot the series over the ensuing years. Putting it on earlier might have brought in a few new normies not interested in anime and who only stick around for the Jack nostalgia, but it likely would have not done considerably better than it is now.

>>
>>91855646
I feel you, anon. I like Super but I feel unmotivated to watch past it. The two most fun shows on the block were One Piece and Jojo, and they're both gone in favor of childish edgy bloodfests. I like Hunter X Hunter but it's not worth sitting through a decade-old DBZ rerun and an hour of grimdark just to see a show that's got its first 100 episodes on Netflix anyway. I'm not sure I'll be motivated to watch Toonami after Jack ends.

Thankfully, Titan season 2 is only 12 episodes so maybe they can un-fuck the schedule when it ends in a few months.
>>
>>91855646
Yeah, I used to stay tuned for One Piece but now I just turn it off after Kai. Don't give a fuck about any of the shows after that, and if Kai was before Super as it should be I'd skip Super too.

>>
>>91854860
To be fair it is a monthly series. So they either needed to either do a bunch of filler or go anime original
>>
>>91855961
I keep hearing this, both here on /co/ and in other Toonami forums. A lot of people aren't watching the whole block anymore because they pulled One Piece.

And here's the thing: OP may not have had the best ratings, but its fanbase was loyal and dedicated, and they were willing to sit through the rest of the block just to get to their show. That boosted the ratings of every other series, even if lots of other people tuned out when OP came on.

Toonami's overall ratings have been down every week since OP cancelled. Aside from Jack, every show has gotten lower numbers consistently. You can pretend that's a coincidence if it makes you feel better.
>>
>>91856074
Must have pissed people off because that one never aired outside of its premiere
>>
>>91856232
Except that's outright wrong. The week after OP was canned the average improved immensely. TG was doing great for its slot until they decided to shelve it for a week after it just started which seems to have killed it.
>>
>>91856148
What we are watching right now are manga chapters from 2013. Season 1 aired in 2014. There's literally no excuse for this 3 year wait
>>
>>91856006

I just turn it on for Jack and then turn it off. I used to watch the whole block no matter how bad it got. I wonder if it's because Jack's too good and the drop in quality from it to Super is so evident that I don't want to keep going
>>

>Super down that much from Jack

What gives? When Jack started, Super was still pulling well over a million, and Kai too IIRC. Now both fall just below that mark.

At this rate, by the time the show finally starts the Zamasu stuff, Super'll be pulling JoJo numbers, and Kai'll be worse.

What are the odds of Toonami getting caned before the end of the year?
>>
>>91858091
The anti-OP fags are obsessed with this trivia, even though it only happened a few times, and never happened with any other show. It's a reflection of OPM's popularity, not anything to do with One Piece.

Don't believe me? OP ran at the 2:30 timeslot for more than a year. Name one other show that beat it at 3:00. Oh wait, you can't, there aren't any.
>>
>>91850209
You mean opm ratings were bad?
As far as I know , opm ratings were always above 1.2million views
>>
>>91861471
They just want to make themselves feel better because it's now impossible to deny that One Piece's cancellation hurt the block's ratings. One week is a coincidence but four weeks (leaving off the April Fool's one) is a pattern.
>>
>>91861572
We're talking about OPM's rerun ratings, which were usually around 600-800.

OPM definitely had some of Toonami's best-ever ratings in its premiere, so it's no surprise it did well in repeats, too. It likely would have beaten whatever show was airing at 2:30 no matter what it was.

Jojo is one of the few dubs where ridiculous fake accents work perfectly in the show's favor.

The next Jojo will have a standard American accent (he's Japanese) but his friends include a magical Muslim and a wacky Frenchman, not to mention he fights a fuckton of Egyptians and Arabs. Should be some good accent fodder.

Absolutely not, 11 goes back to Family Guy. That alone will improve ratings slightly. Look at the viewership plummet from Jack to Super. People aren't interested in Super reruns. It airs at 8 because it's literally a little kid show, and that's as close to a kids network as they could get it.

>>91870317
Jack is too good to be stuck on Toonami. It's already reruning on Wednesdays, they won't give it shitslot when it can stand on its own during the week at a good time

The entire Dragon Ball franchise is for kids, you're not making some huge revelation by constantly saying this. And given that DB and Jack are the only Toonami shows not in the ratings toilet, maybe "kids" shows are what viewers want.

>At best they are doing mediocre
They are literally the highest rated anime shows on the block. They're doing poorly now in comparison to how they were doing months ago. Kai used to be above a million every week and Super never did as good because of the 8:00 showing, but was still consistently above 900k.

AoT doing above 800k is also good. It's actually above what I was expecting considering A) it's been 4 years since the first season and the fad is largely over and B) it's no headlining the block like season 1 was. The real problem here is that Demarco can't give premiers the scheduling they deserve because he's locked into starting the block with Jack and the Dragon Ball power hour, which puts any hot new title 90 minutes into the block instead of the first or second show.
>>
>>91852684
Nobody said that about OPM, but I did doubt that Toonami would air KLK and Jojo I admit. OPM had Toonami written all over it, but then again I can think of a couple other series that also seemed like a lock for Toonami that never even came up as possibilities with Demarco.
>>
>>91873485
They've never aired one episode and then the exact same episode a few hours later. That they'd expect anyone to want to sit through Super's bullshit once, let alone twice is ridiculous
>>
>>91874681

Darker than Black being one of them.
>>
>>91874700
No, I mean new seasonal shows that were airing at the time. Like Kekkai Sensen or Shingeki no Bahamut Genesis. DTB is older and I'm not sure it would get any views. It is from before the era of everything getting simulcasts though, so maybe the normie crowd isn't as exposed to it and could get views just on novelty, like Dimension W did.
>>
>>91874694
It's likely out of their hands. Contract probably said they wanted an earlier timeslot for it since Super isn't a late night anime in Japan they want kids to watch it too, so probably stipulated that AS had to put it on earlier.
>>
>>91874789
In that case they should remove it from Toonami and replace it with something else, or put it in the rerun slot of Toonami, since it's technically what it is.
>>
>>91874835
Despite being a rerun it's still incredibly popular. It pulls over 900k ratings despite rerunning on the same day. I doubt anything but Dragonball could pull that kind of stunt.
>>
>>91873741
They weren't. They were from last week. DB Super premiers at 8:00 and then the same Super episode airs again on Toonami after Jack. This is the first time anything like this has been done on Toonami and Super is doing remarkably well on the block despite having its premier scooped by the 8:00 showing.
>>
>>91872820
Jojo is not a serious series. The fun accents amplify that it's meant to be a fun series.
>>
>>91874980
It does that because it's in a primetime slot, not because it's good or popular
>>
>>91873741
Those reruns had no effect because they were from the prior weeks Toonami. It was a place to catch up it you missed, but if you wanted to be up to date you had to tune in each week. Super is a rerun of that nights episode, and it's very clearly a problem
>>
>>91874628
God you are stupid. If DB was pulling 500k and everything else was under 400k you would still say it's doing good because it's the highest rated anime of the night. The numbers it's pulling now are not good at all, especially since it has long been trusted to be the blocks life support. 826k for a near world premiere is absymal too, especially that early into the night. People act like 12:30 is a deathslot now when it's nowhere near being one
>>
>>91872891
Anyone with a brain knew it would become a problem fairly quickly

>>91874681
Only morons thought KLK wouldn't come. Jojo had a legitimate reason to assume it wouldn't come, for years there was no sign of a dub being made. Then when it did get a dub, it was by Warner which Demarco implied doesn't work well with itself and wouldn't give the rights. Once it made its way to Viz, most figured it was inevitable
>>
>>91874694
> anyone to sit through super's bullshit once

Are the 8:00 and 11:30 viewing audiences really the same though? I've never seen reactions to Super's 8:00 showing on twitter, it's always the 11:30.
>>
>>91875681
It's safe to assume people watch 8pm and skip 11:30, and it's also safe to assume people watch 11:30 and skip 8pm. The ratings divide between the two is shrinking every week
>>

>>91874789
I find it puzzling DB Super is on AS at all. I get that Toonami is strongly associated with DBZ nostalgia, but from a business standpoint it makesn no sense. DB is a children anime with a huge pull for adults as well, it should be on a kids channel. With reruns on later hours for the adults to catch on, or even airing on CN with reruns on AS. Not premiering in AS.
>>
>>91876496
CN doesn't air anime anymore. No one else does besides Disney, and they avoid shonens now after Shippuden. Adult Swim was the only place for it.

It doesn't matter that DB Super is tooled for kids, they still eat it up because muh nostalgia. And like other people have said what network would take DB Super? Nobody airs anime anymore except for Saturday morning kid toy commercials.

>>91875610

>Only morons thought KLK wouldn't come.
Considering the fact Demarco had to make cuts to the content because it was "gross" I'd say their doubts were well-founded. I still consider KLK an unexpected pick, especially considering how fast they got it.
>>
>>91850362
No Cartoon Network show pulls "millions" anymore.

TTG gets about 1.5 per episode. Adventure Time barely touches 1 million when it's an event episode and doesn't come close when it's not. Steven Universe, a show that never dropped below one million, just started dipping below the past two episodes.

FLCL will be it's last hurrah and the premiere of the final episode will either be the last time Toonami airs or it will be a few months before it ends because they'll just replay FLCL for a few months and then end it.

I've been wanting it to die since Dandy finished. That was the moment I realized Toonami would never have a real premiere again and we were destined to end up with long runners clogging the block, along with the occasional flavor of the season anime.

When was the first moment you lost faith in Toonami? Mine has to be when they picked up Shippuden while OG UNCUT NARUTO was still airing. Thanks for an hour of Naruto back then, Demarco.
>>
>>91877666
We didn't learn Demarco was gay and he needed to cut out "gross" scenes until halfway through KLK. So that wasn't a reason for thinking it wouldn't come
>>
>>91878761
Demarco's obcession with long running shonen and generally pretending the block was still airing in the early 2000s instead of trying to adequate to times is what killed Toonami.

I legit slept through Gundam, so I have no clue if anything of significance happened.

Also, hesitant to take Scaramoush off since I have a feeling he's going to get offed harder than the first time.
>>
>>91879892

gundam wing is so weird.

it actually reminds me of jurassic park, how the book is super super dry, and in a way it's really satisfying to know there's a fun/halfway scientific justification for everything that's happening, but thankfully the people who adapted it into a movie understood that no, that's not what people were going to want to focus on.

Unfortunately that did not happen for GW. For example, the colony clusters in GW are actually charted out on existing lagrange points that provides some really interesting scientific backing for why people could live in space...... but NO ONE wants to focus on that when you have teenagers piloting ROBOTS, jeez louise just make them fight!!!

Calm down with your memes, anon, that's not what he said.

He said shit goes down in the next arc, which is true: it's a huge turning point for the series which changed everything. That doesn't mean "the show gets better at that arc." The show was already plenty good. It's that that arc is a big one story-wise.

Neither did Speedwagon, but they were both pretty influential characters in their own rights throughout the arc, Speedwagon moreso since the Speedwagon Foundation continues to exist in later arcs.

That and the alt-righters would likely have thrown a massive bitchfit if Stroheim wasn't included in some capacity.

I feel like Toonami should bring Akame ga Kill!: Brotherhood around.

Follows the manga more closely, like some characters not dying, or not dying until later, or including brutal clown rape, extending the story, etc.

To be fair, they've been making big changes and made some big grabs. Near simulcast of AoT2 and DragonBall Super are still significant, even if the shows themselves are questionable. JoJo's especially was a major grab, as well as One Punch Man and Samurai Jack exclusivity.

So, they're at least trying. And we are still due FLCL 2, as long as that doesn't get canned before then.
>>
>>91881909
Speedwagon's death is at least funny because the narration says he died a rich virgin.

McGillis dies at the hand of Gaelio
Ride kills Nobliss in the last episode

Why is it that in the year 2017 something like the Dragon Ball Super dub is one year behind the Japanese one? How does that help anyone? The video games are adding in characters that won't premiere in the anime for years. People aren't watching the dub because it's so far behind. In an ideal world, it would be a week behind. I don't know the logistics behind this.
>>
>>91887996
Having a simuldub for shows of this length isn't viable. Even the biggest 12 episodes hits of the season have a been a few weeks behind Japan.

Outlaw Star is getting a Bluray release from Funimation this June; that wouldn't be a bad choice for Toonami since it's short, probably wouldn't cost that much since it'd promote the release, and would have nostalgia value.
>>
>>91888206
except my hero academia season 2, which has a simulcast dub release at the same time as the simulcast sub release, at least for the first 6 episodes or something

Water 7 and Enies Lobby are great arcs, some would even call them the best part of the entire series. The anime butchered Enies Lobby, but Water 7 was still fantastic and people were enjoying the show during that arc. But Enies Lobby in the anime squandered a lot of that goodwill with its horrid pacing and putting 5 fucking recap episodes in the middle of the arc at the most dramatic point for no reason. And if I'm remembering correctly that happened right after the disastrous Month of Movies so basically One Piece came back from a month-long hiatus into another month-long recap of the entire series. It never recovered from that.
>>
>>91883522

>>
>>91887721
I don't. Jack being amazing is a miracle. Normally this kind of thing ends very badly. It only worked because the series creator was the one behind it and he got his dream team together to do it properly. That almost never happens. Normally get shit like New Powerpuff Girls or the abomination that the new FLCL is going to be, shit made without any of the original creative staff, made by some other studio, motivated entirely by profit.
>>
>>91891195

>>91894885

Literally no one cares about this FLCL reboot. It will be a small, forgettable hiccup. Jack had hype because it wasn't just a lazy nostalgia cashgrab. Original staff, original VAs, direct conclusion of an unfinished story etc. All FLCL has for it is that The Pillows will return
