I think they simplified it for the sake of the movie, but in the book Mousemom can't learn to read or use technology but is on a baseline 'clever' enough to understand those concepts. Her exposure to her husband attempting to introduce her to those concepts also helped.

Pretty much in the NIHM universe "normal" rats are already as smart as a typical cartoon anthropomorphic animal, but the NIHM rats are super-intelligent and can understand advanced technology and magic

I think most people who hold Secret of Nimh up as a masterpiece forget how absolutely fucking stupid the ending is.

I think the ending frustrates me more because everything before it is SO GOOD. It would be a 10/10 movie if it just weren't for that dumb ending.

I mean, when stupid shit happens in other Bluth movies like Troll in Central Park or Thumbelina or whatever, I don't care, because those movies were trash to meh, anyway. But to have a GOOD movie fuck up that badly at the one yard line is really, really irritating.

Magic didn't come out of nowhere, it always was present during the whole movie. Just because magic saved the day at the end, doesn't mean it came without warning. Nicodemous was a wise creature, could see the future, he knew the stone would react to Ms. Brisby courage, maybe something similar happened with johnathan, I don't know.

To be honest the ending wasn't shit as people parade it to be. I don't want to sound as a broken record player, but people literally didn't understand the ending.
