Lets discuss 6Teen.

As slice of life shows about teenagers in a mall go, this one certainly was....harmless.
>>
>>91825333
What a strong and interesting opinion you have there. Really helps to get the conversation going when you put forth such clear and well-defined point of view.
>>
in my sincere opinion this show wasn't very good at all.

but I also though Total Drama Island was horseshit when there are people on this board who swear that's its great so what do I know. I think I was too old by the time this stuff was airing for me to care about it. If I was like 12 when this shit was airing maybe I wouldn't have known any better and developed fond childhood memories of it
>>
Was there ever an episode that didn't take place inside the mall? It's been forever since I've seen this show.
>>
Never really liked the show but the theme some is forever stuck in the deepest part of my brain
>>
>>91825419
I think there was a wedding that happened at a house for a scene, but besides that, all mall all the time.

This is because it's an industry in Canada. The Canadian Film Bureau gives tax credit and funding to basically anyone that makes anything that involves Canada, even if only somewhat tangentially. It results in a lot of people basically milking it to make shitty shows/movies, to the point that there's a general industry that's expanded to the point that companies can just buy low-quality animation for cheap.

Theme was memorable, music wise
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58AjM2Vxkiw

That's the main thing I remember of the show though, I think a few episode bits are in my memory somewhere.

I still find it interesting a "Thank god" line made it on a kid's show airing in America after 2000 or so, this weird obsession with censoring out god related things was happening frequently when this crossed into America.

It's like CN wanted to import cheap shows and saw this, and knew it was a relateable based series of being a teen and stuff and saw a few episodes and assumed all of them were safe, only when they got to the big boobs and naked shower episodes did they realize kids over in canada have less strict censors than we have
>>
>>91825455
>>91825567
Really depends on where you live.
NJ mall in brunswick with the movietheatre is bumpin, same with the other one, staten island has a shitty mall but it's normally packed, it's getting updated and they're making a new one to drive the poor out, which is good because it's getting to be ghetto central there.
Malls in the city are also packed, but less so than places like union square, kids hang out there and in public parks. Most packed are the malls by flatbush, but that's where ghetto trash lives.

I think it's awful in places like >>91826866
here because I doubt you can get there easily with public transportation. And while it's almsot as hard in nj, it's still a hive of people because there's so much to do theere between the movie theatres, food places, stores and other junk.

The show wasn't really funny when I watched it on CN or Nickelodeon back when it was on here in the usa, but I remember it being a time passer on a hot day when the internet was slow and I was eating chips. >>
>>91829427
Again, you're fucking retarded. There wouldn't BE any "new producers", because Canadian content is a losing proposition on the free market by definition. The costs compared to American content are astronomical. The only thing that would happen is the implosion of an entire industry.
>>
>>91828575
>You could also say the same for American Media.
In every era, American media has been far, far better than Canadian, even if both have been going downhill.
>>
>>91825671

If US and Canadian culture are so similar, why does it matter if most of the media Canada gets is from the US?
>>
>>91832296
We're discussing the Canadian industry here, are we not? Besides, most Canadians will never get permission to work in the US no matter what they do, so it would cause MASSIVE job losses there.
>>
>>91832319

Is it really that hard for a Canadian to immigrate to the US? Especially since you'd probably have a degree if you're an animator.
>>
>>91826949
When you live in the most expensive cities in the country which also happens to be where all the animation work is (Vancouver and Toronto), then yes, it is certainly about the money.
>>
>>91832389
A degree is practically irrelevant, because you need a job offer lined up, and for that you need YEARS of experience generally speaking. If Canada has no jobs in the industry how is anyone going to get said experience!?

>In every era, American media has been far, far better than Canadian, even if both have been going downhill.

I beg to differ. Even the worst of American animation, from what I've seen. can match that of the worst of Canadian animation (compare some of /co/'s usual punching bags like SU, the PPG reboot or Family Guy, or shows like Coconut Fred, Butt-Ugly Martians or anything H-B made in the 70s with Johnny Test, TDI and most of Mainframe's shows outside Beast Wars).

Sure Canada's shit lasts far longer than America's, but from what I've seen, America produces more of it. But then that also raises questions like "What does TTG classify as?" Because that show is animated in my hometown, yet is aimed towards American audiences.

let it implode. I can understand protectionist policies for things like staple food crops, or defense industry complex, or telecom/internet; because you don't want to lose the necessary things in case of a trade war.

Why subsidize shitty cartoons though? if the Japs, french, and americans do it better; just let them do it. If it turns out that Canadian made product has value to us that foreign made stuff does not, it should be able to prove that it is wanted by being economically viable. With the internet, it's not like low-budget one-man-made Canadian cartoons will disappear forever; and things that become viral, that my indicate that it could be economically viable as a show, and get made by investors, not through my tax dollars.

>Art generally isn't profitable anywhere
i don't see a problem here generally speaking if someone isn't willing to pay for it that means they don't want it so generally speaking if it isn't profitable that means no one wanted it and your solution is to have the government pay for something that no one wants

>American "art" is pretty much the only exception worldwide
that's because americans generally let the market decide what kind of art it wants and artist adapt by making things that people want

why do you put american art in quotation marks?

when you acknowledge that in some countries there's a higher demand for american art than there is for art made in those country
>>

so are you saying that if these countries cut their government-funded art projects that america would offer the best product at the best price over a long period of time? why would i not be okay with that?

your argument is basically that american art is so far above any other art that nobody wants anything else do you have such little faith in art originating in other countries or do you genuinely believe that american art is that good if so why shouldn't it dominate the world

>Not everyone shares America's capitalist values
i never said that
you are the one that's saying that 99% of people who pay for art would pay for american art over art made in other countries

i don't believe that. i believe if you cut government funding to art it would make art from other countries better and more profitable because it would force the artist from other countries to actually make art that people wanted instead of wasting millions of dollars in taxpayer money to make art that no one is willing to invest in

it's like i said here

>Elitism isn't always bad, and personally I'd much rather see my taxes being spent on art than just about anything else.
i agree that elitism can be good, and produce great stuff that the "brainless masses" don't appreciate enough to pay for. what i don't agree with is taxing the "brainless masses" to produce it. It's extremely regressive to tax poor people to create things that only elites want or appreciate. historically, artists relied on wealthy elite patrons to support them, creating things that elites can appreciate. Lorenzo de Medici served as patron to Leonardo da Vinci. The same happens today with charitable art endowments. A large portion of the Harvard endowment is dedicated to the arts, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, etc.

>i have no problem with natural monopolies because the only way to get and maintain them is to offer the best product at the best price
Thats not how monopolies work at ALL. Once you have a monopoly, you dont HAVE to offer the best product at the best price anymore, because there is no one competing with you. If anyone does try to enter this market that you completely dominate with a better product and price, it doesnt really matter because you can fucking obliterate them before their product gets off the ground. You have free reign to sell garbage and charge out the fucking ass for it and theres nothing anybody can do.

hence why monopolies are bad.

Name one time a company had a monopoly where it actually WAS offering the best product and price. Protip: You cant, because once monopoly is established, companies just start cutting costs and raising prices to maximize income, and if ever a competitor appears, the monopolizing company uses its size and power to push them out, even going so far as to simply not allow the competing product to appear in any popular storefront. It would be like if Apple was the only hardware manufacturer in town, and then a tiny upstart company tried to come in and introduce a mobile device to compete with the iphone. its not going to happen.

You'd probably still have Mattel and Hasbro's cartoons based on toy lines and anything that shifts merch, Disney would still be in business. Not sure anyone else would be. If you think it's right or wrong from a political standpoint to subsidise the arts doesn't matter, the practical truth of the matter is that we'd have far fewer and far shittier, more cheaply made comics and cartoons without them. Because the only reason to make them would be if they would be profitable.

>>91849763
I'm not sure how the tax burden is shared in your country, but here in Bongland anyone who counts as "poor" doesn't pay tax, or pays very little. And since I doubt the people at the top of society care much for comics or cartoons (I hear paintings and statues of naked little boys are more to their taste) it seems pretty fair the middle classes who consume them subsidise them.

Without these incentives, France would have no animation industry. If that's what you think should happen, fair enough. We'll have to agree to disagree. But I think that would be a terrible shame. It's the same case with comics artists, which is a major reason France still has a strong comics scene.

And here is what happens when you decide to cut incentives:

The presidential position really isn't that important or difficult. The country is fucked because citizens have slowly given up their voice in the country, surrendering their power to the extremely wealthy and the corrupt congressmen who serve them.

So in that way, it doesn't really matter who wins the presidential election as >>91847880 sorta said. I mean, I believe things would have been better under the Democrats, but you're really just arguing about which stage of cancer you'd rather have.

At the end of the day, we were always going to go into Syria. We were always going to surrender bits of privacy and freedom we thought were inalienable. We were always going to be forced to pay for healthcare through insurance providers instead of through a single-payer system.
