So basically, a few months ago, Wendy's twitter account started getting some buzz due to the company's media manager making a bunch of very sassy remarks, to haters, to other companies, just generally talking smack and being highly entertaining. This gave birth to a meme, Smug Wendy, which is basically just Wendy as one of those smug anime girls, prompting fanart and such. /co/ apparently just today found out about this, and now the fucking Wendy's mascot is the current flavor of the week.

I think the issue is that the story is so... pedestrian, for lack of a better word.

Yeah, there's the mystery of why Polly sent the captain to collect more Amazons, the idea that there are Amazons all over the world who need to be awoken and recruited is neat, and there's a lot of nice atmosphere and grit.

But, the characters are all kinda one-note, making the interpersonal drama unengaging, the mysteries are just kinda there, with no clues or hints given, and the villains are just bog standard antagonists.

It's a damn shame that we finally get a proper WW spinoff, and it's so painfully mediocre. I wanted to like this book so much, but I can't without lying to myself.

Rebirth was a real apology tour, and for his faults, Johns seems to know and care about a very wide spread of the DCU. I don't get that same wide-reaching feel off Aaron, and I don't see Marvel Editorial letting one person call the whole line like DC really did with Johns, who seems to have finessed a lot of shit along personally and well.
>>
>>91824071
I'm not concerned because I don't feel like anything is actually changing substantially. Just more shit.
>>
>>91824071
It's going to be more of the same except maybe they'll be telling the truth about not having an event for ~18 months

Though I can imagine they'll have like 3-4 crossovers instead, but hopefully it would be 4-6 part crossovers like DC's having right now instead of Black Vortex and Doomed length crossovers
>>
>>91824164

and of course it seems like Johns top down manager stuff is the big thing helping Rebirth
>>
>>91824071
>genuine apologetical elements of Rebirth.
I truly love that Rebirth is just DC calling a mulligan on the Nu52. "Okay, we kinda fucked up. Hold on, we'll try to fix it.".

To see a company basically getting in its knees and groveling for forgiveness from its costumer base fills me with a sadistic glee that cannot be otherwise matched.

It smacks of a lot of the problems in most modern Amazon depictions up until Rebirth. Almost all of them are just kind of stern, humorless warrior women who value battle above all, and if you're lucky they'll give some token remarks about peace, before three pages later saying something like "less talking, more killing!"

The Amazons lacking some character has always been a problem even with Perez, but even there they were at least somewhat ideologically diverse. Every Amazon is trained for battle but they're not all soldiers.

By the end of the issue of Odyssey I read I couldn't remember any character except the one that liked being an artist more than a warrior.

I feel bad just dropping this, but I'm heading out. This is a really good read about Hydracap from someone who actually seems to know what the story is. Move past the title:

That's the instant death knell of any story. Let's be perfectly honest, the plot is the least important part of a story. Yeah, you need it, but it's like editing, nobody really gives a shit unless it's really good or really bad.

It's the characters that make a story. If your characters are good, the audience will put up with a lot of bullshit and follow those people through hell and bad writing because they have formed an emotional connection to them.

I can't remember any of the Odyssey Amazons names. None of them had any defined personality traits to latch on to. That is a fundamental failure of storytelling. It's like this book is all premise, no detail. A sandwich without something between the bread is just two pieces of bread.

>>91824456
To be fair, I think it's less trying to appeal to females as an entire demographic and more about appealing specifically to the demographic of girls who read YA novels, webcomics, manga, and graphic novels. Which I think is a totally fine goal.

So I think instead of trying to make traditional superhero titles that "appeal to women" like All-New Wolverine that end up appealing to no one, they should just have two things:

1) the titles meant to appeal to the aforementioned girls who read YA novels, webcomics, manga, and graphic novels (with some decent writers hopefully)
and
2) traditional superheroes that don't "appeal" to women, but just don't actively drive them away with lame unlikable female characters

I continue to point to the really large female contingent of WildStorm fans because the female characters are really likable and not offensively shitty.

Christina Strain. She did her own webcomic called The Fox Sister (which is definitely a cut above the average) but has been around in comics as a colorist for about 15 years and has written film spots and currently writes for The Magicians too.

So I definitely have hope for her bringing something to Gen X.

>>91824713
I'm only using that as an example, and I've never read that book or heard from anyone who has.

This is kind of projecting but I doubt the audience making it do well isn't more female than any other popular book. I just don't know any females that would see something that says like "you know Wolverine? Well now he's a GURL" and be interested.

But again that's projection and I don't have any information to back that up, so maybe I'm totally wrong. I do know girls tend to like X-23 quite a bit.
