I like Jackie a lot and her dynamic with Marco is interesting.
But the problem is that, for now, she has absolutely no place in the story outside of a relationship with Marco, and that's not going to survive him leaving Earth.

Jackie still has a lot of untapped potential, even if she doesn't turn out to be merfolk or something, but she's going to need a rework to get there and that's going to require taking her out of the story for a while. I'm sure she'll be back, one way or another.

You can assume that if you want, but considering Marco's character, how long he tends to hesitate regarding love matters (took him a decade to make a move on Jackie), I don't think it's likely he'll break up with her immediately just because Star cranked out an awkward confession. I mean his reaction to Star supposedly having a crush on him t. Ruberiot wasn't exactly positive before. I'm expecting him to be confused about his emotions for at least 6+ episodes, and seeing how he's been dreaming of Jackie since kindergarten I doubt he'll break up with her at the drop of a hat, there'll be more character growth involved, it'll be a moment.

So, Jackie should be around for at least a couple of eps. She also might want to help Star upon hearing she's in trouble. Why drop her from the opening?

It's strange, and with the combo of the mermaid hints having been piling up towards the end of last season, natural hair and interdimensional dating in the book - I kinda think it's more likely there really is something up with her and there'll be a reveal, which is why she's so conspicuously absent.
