No matter what this film has one of the most underrated scores of any mainstream film in the past 20 years. Too bad people only pay attention to John Powell when he's doing a score for How to Train Your Dragon. He's consistently solid as far as movie composers go.

Here we go,
So Martians have removed maternal skills from their culture. They instead use robots to raise their podlings, keepings the females and dumping the males into the trash chutes (where they live a feral/tribal existence in the refuse of mars). The robots are programmed by abducting a human woman who has strong mothering skills, then incinerating her with a Sun focused laser beam which imprints her skills onto the robots.
Gribble the comedic relief, had his mother abducted by the martians 20 years prior to the film opening. He as a child stowed away in the abducto-rocket, and went to mars to save his mom. He failed, horribly. Too late to rescue her the young gribble was just in time to watch his mother burn to death with the knowledge that the martians chose her because Gribble was a good kid who did what his mother asked. He then grew up on the planet a socially broken weirdo, hiding in the refuse area with the male martians.

The movie follows Milo, who finds himself in a similar situation, and has to rescue his mother mostly by exploring mars and uncovering the horrible tragedy of Gribble's life and helping him come to terms with it..

But it all works out in the end. Gribble even gets a freaky alien girlfriend, so there's that

6/10 movie, not horrible.

That makes no sense. They're removing males from society which means the martian society would lack a paternal figure. The only way Mars would actually need moms is if it was a society where children are artificially grown and females are abandoned, making the society exclusively male.

As for Mars Needs Moms, I liked that weird language barrier thing they had going on. Where each of the main characters absorbed the pop culture of different eras, so they all spoke English but had a hard time communicating because it was rooted in the lingo/slang of media they learned it from. So like Martian girl was 60s, Gribble was 80s and the main kid was the 10s.

I remember when this was airing in theaters. I saw the commercials on tv all the time. It looked awful even then. And it looks as bad now.
