I half agree with this, but I also think there are a lot of instances where to tell the best story a character DOES need to be a certain gender or race.

As much as I don't like how Rey is written, I think her being a female adds a layer to the trilogy we haven't seen in the ot or pt. 90 percent of what she does wouldn't be as impactful if she was a young man. At least that's just my opinion on her character. There are better, more obvious examples of characters who rely on their gender to tell a story

So I just finished Thrawn last night, good read, would recommend to anyone who hasn't. It did the thing I liked in the Plagueis novel and was disappointed they didn't do in the Tarkin novel, it spanned a long time instead of taking place in a few days.

Particularly enjoyed the twist at the end where the battle mentioned in Rebels, where civilian casualties vastly outweighed combatants, was actually caused by Pryce and Thrawn had to take credit. I was on the fence when I realized the book would jump between Pryce and Thrawn but it was neat where, as thing progressed, Thrawn became more humanized and Pryce slowly turned into a monster, different from their outward appearance on Rebels

Never stopped anyone before. And anyway, there's nothing to say that Finn can't close the gap on his own, the film shows that he's a great shot with a blaster, and does a pretty decent job with a lightsaber despite not being force-sensitive, when most regular people who try to use one of them end up killing themselves with it. Could easily build off of that.

It's funny, actually, but Finn actually seems more compassionate than Rey. Considering how it's his idea to rescue her from Starkiller. Eh, maybe it's just me.

Personally I prefer the ship with all three of them.

Finn's odd, he's only really compassionate at the end, and even then he would have happily abandoned the mission to stop Starkiller to save Rey instead if Han hadn't yelled at him. Underneath it all, Finn is a hero more by accident than his own design, which kind of makes him the Han of the new trio (that is, the self interested scoundrel who finds friends worth fighting for)

So if the Plinkett/RLM reviews are the definitive "case against" the prequel films, what is the definitive "case for" them?

Has anyone ever put together something of similar quality, not necessarily in response to Plinkett, but laying out the reasons the prequels should be exonerated?

And I'm not talking about that ring theory stuff.

Personally, I like the PT, even though I know it has many flaws and faults. It's kind of fascinating to me, and I was wondering what, if any, you guys think are the highest quality prequel-apologists.

I can take away the more distasteful qualities from the characters I want, or all of them. I can add a wider variety of weaknesses for female characters if I remove their innate ones. For me, what makes the prequels stand out is their strange ambitions, their deep themes (even if they are a bit undercooked) and an understanding of where Lucas came from as a filmmaker out of the whole American Zoetrope independent filmmaker thing.
I dunno, I just feel like answering back to detractors at best just puts the prequel films back at square one of 'competent, fun, if unremarkable film', which seems to be Plinkett's benchmark, as he constantly makes reference to old adventure seriels and the standard structure of action/fantsy films.

if I'm reading a book and someone is mentioned as being a siniteen mercenary, is it a bald, pale rattataki or a brainee type siniteen

Rattatak native species are the bald people that you can play as in swtor and look somewhat like Ventress (Ventress ironically being the very first Rattataki introduced into canon before being retconned),

but the world also features immigrated species such as Siniteen, Weequay, Zabraks from Iridonia as well as their similar, assimilated/inter-species Dathomirian variants such as Maul or, even Dathomiri themselves such as Ventress (aka hybrid offspring of male dathomiri zabrak and dathomiri-native human females, or in other cases just the pure-blooded human Dathomiri that make up most of the population on Dathomir)

i.e. we have people like Ventress and Maul being native Dathomiri, even though in-universe both are often understandably mistakenly referred to as Maul being just a Zabrak (which is still technically not wrong, it's more of a formal/cultural distinction both in and out of universe when looked at from a wider perspective) or Ventress being referred to as a Rattataki—no biological relation to Rattataki whatsoever, but a completely realistic assumption to make from both in and out of universe perspective nonetheless.

Canon as it is right now:
Rattatak native species have been changed to Siniteen (The brainiacs). Rattataki is now instead a demonym of the planet's people including, I assume, the original bald dudes (the image that used to be associated with rattataki) as well as the big-brains.

everything else is more or less untouched, incl the general concept of the planet.

Have any ventress-looking rattataki been introduced into canon, then? Do they even exist anymore? And what are they called? Siniteen as well?

From what I recall they are just an external hyperdrive for some ships that don't have them. Read: at the time hyperdrives were probably often too expensive or large to fit on smaller fighters like the fighters the Jedi used.

That said in TCW we see them around a fleet, just floating and waiting for use IIRC.

You probably just dump it in orbit and then rendezvous with it once you need it again.

There's a lot of interesting things, like how occasionally you'll see them mention a "good elephant." In Chinese, "Haoxiang" means "seems like" more or less, but that's written like 好像. Elephant in Chinese is written like 象, but is pronounced the same. So one would reasonably assume "oh, someone's just made a mistake."
But that's weird in and of itself. Typing in Chinese means you'd type in Pinyin, which is the pronunciations of the characters in a roman characters, and for that you'd type "xiang" for both. But chiense software knows to recognize chinese phrases and what have you, which means if you type "haoxiang" in that software, it will always return to you 好像.
This means that the bootleg subtitling was done by: Someone with both a poor grasp of both Chinese and English, going character by character, someone with a poor grasp of Chinese and Technology, entering each character in individually and thus opening themselves up to punching in "good elephant," or, in the most likely case, someone with poor grasp of technology and also didn't care because it's a Chinese bootleg and if you were making bootlegs I doubt you'd care much either

How much do you think Snips fugured out about Anakin and Padme being together?

At the end of season 5 she says 'she understands' Anakin wanting to leave the order 'more than he knows'.
It seems like Obi-Wan pretty much had it all figured out. And Ahsoka would have spent much more time by Anakin's side throughout their marriage, seeing as Anakin gets married not long before he stops beign Obi-Wan's padawan.
She would've been by his side virtually 24/7 as his apprentice. Presumably she'd have noticed how much time they spend together, how much they (I assume) talk on the space-equivalent of skype?
She can't have been so clueless as notbe in on the secret, can she?

ROTJ has terrible pacing issues though, and in between novels are great for helping tell you bigger more detailed explanations. Also the whole Tatoonie part falls apart when the "biggest baddest" bounty hunter falls into a Sarlacc pit to "die" since the TFA hasn't mentioned anything about him. Also the Ewoks fight makes me with I could have had another Hoth instead.
