That's the tricky thing.

You could still have Monstar forcing Marco to be more outgoing, since he looks human, etc. but that's hard to do without seeming forced, etc.

Perhaps the way to do it is involve Marco and MonStar with the conflict on Mewni (over the throne succession) a lot more, and have Marco grow by having him take a more active role defending Star/helping her (while avoiding the whole damsel in distress trope) because he's a good kid (just needs to get some more guts)

The whole River kinda taking Toffees places in a narrative sense kinda fits (at a stretch), but honestly if people are creating original works then there's no real reason that the AU has to follow the original shows narrative. At the same time though, it's easier to ask fun stuff like "how would MonStar have reacted to BonBon or a set of events analogous to BonBon" or whatever than "how would MonStar have reacted to this entirely different set of plot events that I just came up with" when it comes to simple shitposting on /co/, so Toffee and River roleswap works well enough..
