The joke was set up earlier in the episode when they went through the McD's. It's a valid setup since Rick was traveling through his memories and him liking the sauce is believable and consistent enough with his character. It is a red herring. Rick probably doesn't give a damn about the sauce, but he doesn't want to show the world that he can actually care about something that is supposed to have value.
