It won't be perfect, but it's already an improvement on what they did with MoS and BvS, though I liked both of them along with SS. By being less gritty and more colorful is a step in the right direction, and it seems like it will have a good amount of light hearted moments, without going super quip heavy like some of the more recent Marvel movies. It also won't beat viewers over the head with God imagery like BvS, so that's a plus. After this movie they'll be more comfortable with the new direction and will be able to start the next films with that in mind, rather than having to make changes like they did with this and SS.

In MoS, it felt underwhelming to see Jor-el like that, given the HR Geiger grandeur of the rest of the ship. In that and BvS I felt conflicted about ALL the jesus imagery. We GET IT, we know it's not a new idea, but at least whenever he did something god-like, he had a very torn expression on his face about it.

Oh yeah, that was a thing if I recall.
I remember watching BvS and when Luthor went to the ship I was like "wait is this Giger ?".
I'm a huge fan of Giger and his artwork and I was dumbfounded that this abominable clusterfuck of a movie was imitating it like that.
It kind of took me out of it because it made me wish that this great imagery was actually used in a good superhero movie.

It could actually be pretty neat if Doomsday actually resembled one of his monsters instead of it being a grey Shrek.

It doesn't personally appeal to you, that doesn't mean it's a inherently flawed product.

The difference is that is Sentries established (expected) character.

DC could have done a Captain Atom movie. Captain Atom could have been as somber and as questionably motivated as anyone wanted. A whole movie about a super powered guy that's a tool for the government and maybe towards the end develops his own since of right and wrong to some degree. And that would have been fine because that is the expectations of a Captain Atom movie. You can make an emotionally distant schizophrenic Sentry movie because that is the expectations of his character.

What is continuously ignored about the current run of DC movies when defending them is that the complaints people have are with the tone of the characters not the tone of the film. The characters who are expected to vibrant and positive or steadfast and unwavering have been changed to fit the mood that Snyder or WB execs or whomever wanted for their movies. There are plenty of DC characters the tone they were looking for could have worked with, Superman wasn't one of them. Marvel could make an exceedingly "dark" movie with Sentry and everything would be in place because his story was pretty "dark" to begin with.

Superman spends most of the movies frowning or yelling while he is punching people in the face and, outside of BvS, he willingly puts civilians in danger and shows almost no regard for their safety. He has no levity to him, because he is fighting other Kryptonians and punching them from empty farmlands/craters into populated areas. Instead of sighing and shaking his head as random thugs pointlessly shoot at them before breaking their weapons and dropping them off for the police, he has to to go straight to fighting other Super humans. The only people that Clark shows any sort of warm or friendly emotion to is to Lois and the Waitress, I don't think he even smiles around his mother. Oh wait he might have been smiling when he smashed a UAV into the ground in front of General Guy.

By BvS no one should like Superman other than Lois Lane, even the people he helps he does so with a frown on his face, like it is a massive inconvenience for him. The way Superman is portrayed in these shitty movies puts him more in line with Batman where no one likes him except for fucking weirdos.

MoS' villain should have been Lex Luthor and BvS' villain should have been Zod and the other Kryptonians. This way Superman could have had the same dilemma that Batman was given in the Dark Knight, without it being as dark, where he is left to wonder if his presence is creating these crazies like Lex Luthor and if he is doing the right thing. And then with the invading Kryptonians Batman has a reason to believe Superman might be some kind of scout for these hostile aliens.

Marvel gives the people what they want, DCEU gives the people poorly produced "art" and a hour and a half long Skrillex video.

I personally still think the weakest part of DCEU so far is story structure and character motivation. Marvel may have fluff piece subject matter, unimpressive villains, drama that is undercut by too many jokes but they keep their character motivations obvious and plots followable. There's just so much in the DCEU from a narrative perspective that just doesn't add up. At least not without stretches of the imagination or a preexisting knowledge of the lore. DCEU isn't all bad, it's just mostly visual, things look really cool. But for most people (I think) even if they aren't aware of it really visuals alone are not enough. A simple story and one dimensional character blowing shit up is better than a series of of equally impressive it not better crafted events that confuse the viewer or don't explain what's happening in the story or with the people involved.
